Time seemed to have stopped, the throne room silent with breathless anticipation. The only sound Ladybug could hear was her own pulse in her ears – hard and fast and desperate, as she waited to see what Cat Blanc – what Adrien – would do. Never mind that the guards still held swords to her throat. All that mattered was him.

He remained beside his father, his body still, eyes cold and skin bloodless. Was it too much to hope that some part of him remembered what he’d felt for her only earlier that evening? That deep down he knew he was supposed to love her?

Kagami’s gaze was still darting between them, her stance uncertain. ‘Your Majesty –’

The king stopped her with a harsh look, like he might have killed her where she stood if he weren’t so entertained by the show that was about to start. Like this was all some play for his pleasure. ‘Stand back. Give the prince some room. And release the girl. She’s not going anywhere.’

The guards shared a questioning look – especially Kagami. No one moved.

At the king’s side, Mayura lifted her hands as if conducting an orchestra, and her bizarre chimera took a threatening step forward, teeth bared.

Ladybug’s captors removed their swords from her throat and let her go, backing away. Mayura’s hands dropped, the chimera not moving further. Yet Ladybug didn’t feel any safer. Not under the icy stare of Cat Blanc.

She couldn’t suppress the tremble as he stepped down onto their level, approaching. He dropped almost onto all fours, stalking a slow circle around her, like an actual cat sizing up his prey.

This just could not be happening. She was supposed to be saving him – and Alya! And getting married!

She put up her hands in shaky surrender. ‘I – I don’t want to fight you.’

His mouth curved into a heartless smile. ‘That’s too bad – because I want to fight you!’ Before she could blink, he kicked her square in the stomach, sending her flying across the room.

Clinging to Carpet with one hand, while clutching the inexplicable broom in the other, Marinette zipped through the halls of the palace. Her heart raced as fast as they were flying.

Alya had been kidnapped. The Miracle Box had been taken. And Adrien…what was happening to Adrien?

She glanced behind, to check if Blue Face was following. But of course, she wasn’t. All of this had to be a ploy, to drive her to the king – to deliver the ladybug earrings he’d sent her into that cave to retrieve.

Because he couldn’t go down there himself.

Because he wasn’t the chosen one.

And somehow, she was.

The earrings had started making a strange beeping sound – now, over and over again, like a kind of alarm, warning her of something. But what?

Pink mist enveloped her, and she yelped as the ladybug costume vanished, along with the broom. She was back in her dress, without a weapon – without even a yo-yo.

Oh. That’s what.

At least Tikki was back. ‘Marinette! I knew you could do it!

‘You saw what happened?’

‘Mm-hm. I mean, I didn’t see it as much as…well, I sense everything you experience, when you channel my energy – and you were awesome!’

Marinette’s cheeks warmed with pride. ‘I guess I was a little awesome. But Tikki – Alya…and the box…and Adrien…!’

‘I know, I know. But don’t worry. You’ll figure something out. But first, you need to feed me. After you call up your lucky charm, you only have five minutes before you de-transform, and then I need to recharge before you can transform again. Oh, and it’s best to throw your lucky charm while transformed and say, “Miraculous Ladybug,” to restore any damage caused during battle.’

Marinette blinked at her. ‘Why didn’t you tell me that sooner?’

‘I did! You weren’t listening! It was all, “Adrien, Adrien, Adrien,” and, “But Tikki – I’m not the Guardian!”’

Marinette drew back, her eyes large at the kwami’s uncanny impression of her. ‘O-okay, that’s…that’s fair. Carpet – to the kitchen!’ Wherever that was. The palace was a labyrinth.

Chapter 14: Push Hands

This is my story about Sabine & Marinette for the @mlbigbang. The story is from Sabine's POV as she tries to figure out what has been traumatizing her little girl (who, by the way, will not tell her anything).

Sabine came to this sewer to kick teenager ass and chew bubblegum, and she's all out of bubblegum.

Her two copies froze as she adjusted to double the sensory information. She was looking at herself. When one copy moved, she felt it in the other copy. Or was the copy feeling it and she was feeling what the copy was feeling? Was she the copy? No, the copy was her. Or she was it. Her.

Us. We are the copies.

The sewer smelled just as awful from either pair of nostrils.

The two Duoshus placed left palm to right palm, feeling the pressure, and she was reminded of placing a candle between parallel mirrors and seeing a hundred reflections of the light diverging into an illusion of distance.

“Hey,” one of them said into the other’s ear, and the speaker heard the greeting in her own ear.

My God, this is weird.

It was like being at a loud disco trying to have a private conversation. She had two sets of thoughts in her head, or in her heads, but with some focus, she could listen to one train of thought and ignore the other.

‘I’m in love!’ Adrien spun in a delirious circle, smacking his hand on something. ‘Sorry!’ he made out, before realising he was apologising to a pillar.

He carried on.

His father would never accept Marinette if he knew she wasn’t a real princess. But she was it. She was the one. There was no way he was letting her get away.

Which meant she’d just have to be Princess Marie for the rest of time. He’d join in with her lie. Even though he…hated lies and liars.

But if you looked at it from another angle…was it really a lie?

(Yes.)

He was just…helping keep her identity a secret.

(Her made-up liar identity.)

In a way…he owed it to her, after all the trouble she’d gone through just for him.

(Because he’d lied, too.)

His father had locked her in a dungeon – on a completely false accusation related to him.

(Because of his completely made-up liar identity.)

It was basically his duty to keep her secret. He was protecting his lady, that was all. Didn’t that make him some kind of knight in shining armour?

(No.)

Besides…the girl was hotter than the desert in a firestorm.

If only he had some friends to tell…!

(You were supposed to be telling your father.)

Sabine trains Ladybug in martial arts. She needs a little miraculous help to keep up. And then an old friend she'd once had for dinner shows up.

Sabine still wasn’t sure how she felt about sharing her home with a god. She seemed nice enough, but didn’t gods usually come with words like Ragnarok, Armageddon, and...Cataclysm?

At least she didn’t live with whatever god gave Chat Noir that ability. What would it be like to break bread with something that could end reality?

What if her partner ever went crazy and touched Marinette with that power? Could the Goddess of Creation hold off the Goddess of…Destruction?

Sabine felt the blood drain from her face, recalling what she’d read in Marinette’s diary. She had been so high on adrenaline and fear that her memories were a threadbare quilt, unraveling even as it was stitched together. There was something about Chat Noir, and…

Her skin froze, and she felt like someone had curled their fingers under her rib cage and pressed up into her organs. Our love did this to the world.
