Editing? Oh you mean fic patching.

  • Protagonist now has more complex motivations.
  • Protagonist now remembers key facts about important people. He no longer develops convenient amnesia between cutscenes.
  • Protagonist now has a cooldown on certain adverbs. Adverbs have been buffed by 30% to compensate.
  • Developer note: Adverbs are important to writing but they are sometimes overused. This change keeps adverbs relevant while encouraging the use of adjectives and verbs.
  • The horse now has a name.
  • Deuteragonist snark power has been increased to 150, up from 75.
  • Characters now no longer reference the previous version’s climate and have been updated to react appropriately to the currently set season.
  • Solved a glitch where supernumerary limbs would sometimes emerge during complex physical interactions.
  • Should no longer display “[insertnamehere]” during conversations and narration. All of such occurrances have been replaced with the appropriate tags.
  • Conversation continuity has been improved. Characters will no longer inappropriately respond with lines from previous iterations of the narrative.
  • All references to “Event A” have been purged to reflect changes in narrative structure.
  • Now with more thematically-consistent swearing.

  • Back-to-back repeated words that resulted from sentence rearranging or start/stop editing have been cleared.
  • Paragraphs which contained two or more instances of the same adjective have had their adjectives updated to accurately reflect a player’s vocabulary inventory.
  • Minor time traveling issues have been resolved, all characters should now exist in the same tense.
  • Punctuation has been improved. Commas have been reduced by half.
  • Characters sighing has been reduced by 30%.
  • Characters looking at things or people during conversations has been reduced by 40%. To make up for this, characters thinking about the conversation has been boosted and descriptive narrative has been added.
  • Title has been applied.

PLASTIC HEARTS NOVEMBER 27, 2020

“Writing a song like Never Be Me,’ it’s a sacrifice and it’s a choice that I commit to because some of the songs I write––I am not ignorant to the pain that they can cause to the subjects, and a lot of the time, have to choose, again, is it worth it for me to release this, you know? And I mean release it not to everyone else, but to me. To allow this thought or this feeling to come out, cause its giving it power. Like my dad says, you write it down, you speak it, you give it power. It’s real now. It’s something more than the thoughts in your head.“

Reasons Why Fans of Color Leave/Don’t Interact with Fandom

  • Casual racism that is brushed off as “an innocent mistake” or “they didn’t mean it” and then everyone pretending like it didn’t happen and moving on with their day (repeat)
  • Speaking over fans of color about issues that pertain to them specifically
  • When fans of color speak out about something that makes them uncomfortable or why that don’t interact with it (usually because of the racial/ethnic bias) they are accused of being anti’s or pro-censorship
  • Characters of color being used as scapegoats/bashed/plot devices
  • Characters of color never getting happy endings/real development
  • Backlash against characters of color if they do anything other than be a white character’s side kick/best friend
  • Actors of characters of color being harassed for something their character did or didn’t do
  • White characters/actors getting all the attention/credit despite the fact that they are a side character to a POC or on the same level as the POC
  • Fanfic authors patting themselves on the back for writing a “realistic” character of color and it’s just a bunch of stereotypes
  • Being told that they should be happy they were even included when they call out the above people
  • White fans crying about persecution/exclusion because their fav character/trope/kink/ship isn’t loved by all
  • Fan artists re-imaging characters of color as white/lightening skin tone
  • Everyone rushing to a white fans defense after a well deserved call out while the fan of color receives hate
  • Never having a safe fandom space and always having to be on guard with new people/fandoms/chats etc because they’ve been burned before

Feel free to add

- fetishization and depersonalization of characters of color (to serve the white character’s narrative)

- (re)writing characters of color as abusive and/or violent to infantilize white characters

- being asked to explain why ___ is racist when it’s been spoken about at length or could be googled

-characters being white washed in canon and it being played off as “just an art style” (winx club)

  • fan content creators making brown/black characters more aggressive/violent/bigger/more threatening
  • racist AUs, genreshifting AUs where brown/black characters are nonhuman
  • explicitly black/brown characters not existing unless they’re nonhuman fantasy species but “coded” i.e. white humans and dark elves

• Measuring characters of colour by impossible standards that are almost never applied to white characters. If they’re “nice” they’re boring and bland, if they’re “mean” their faults and mistakes will be brought up every single time they show up. It’s almost like they can never win.

• Writing them out in fandom content while other white characters get major roles. And this happens to characters of colour who are major characters in the original material!

• On the flip side, villainizing them to the point where the characters written cannot even be recognized from what they were in canon.

  • White Fandom showing their whole ass whenever a black actor or actress gets a job, and then acting like nothing happened a few months later, as if they have always cared about said character/actor, after they became extremely popular.
  • Taking characters of color out of their own story to solely focus on minor white characters, or sidekicks.
  • Completely ignoring an entire cast of black characters to focus/ship the only two white characters in the story.
  • Supplanting black characters with white characters, who aren’t even in the original source material, because fandom can’t empathize with a story that doesn’t center white characters.
  • Rewriting the source material to make it the complete opposite of the original narrative to showcase white characters who aren’t in the source material (I.e. the de-colonization narrative of Black Panther).
  • Being called out for racism, then writing a twenty paragraph, pseudo intellectual bullshit essay, on why a particular character of color deserves to die, be killed off, or doesn’t need to be in a story that’s actually about them!
  • Slave-fic AUs for black characters….
  • White fandom asserting harmful stereotypical personal canons of black characters even to the point of supplanting actual canon
  • Only seeing characters of color as very simple constructs; infantilizing, mammy, comic relief, muscle etc… To avoid any actual empathizing work of seeing that character as fully human
  • Complete erasure of black characters from the center of fandom, even if they are leads in the narrative
  • Black men are brutes, black women are SBW’s
  • Any kind of mistake or flaw renders a black character unredeemably awful and thereby justifies their erasure from fandom centering
  • (personal pet peeve) Naming black characters in fics and fanworks but barely including them in the actual work in any form or capacity beyond a sitcom “Hey!” or assist to actually centered white characters
  • Nitpicked to justify marginalization, i.e. nuance doesn’t exist.
  • If by some miracle a black character is favored by white fandom, it’s only apart from other black characters, including family.

the experience of writing something, posting it, and then having people comment about their favorite parts through their eyes is just. such an incredible experience. it’s like getting to re-read your own writing again for the first time and it always gives me such a giddy feeling when people pick up on things i don’t realize i’m putting out.
