Why So Grimm

Life has to be given a meaning because it has none. I won't bother with my blog.

can we please bring back “in poor taste” as a concept

Because at some point it got folded in under “problematic,” and now every damn thing that has Unfortunate Implications or deals with sensitive topics indelicately enough to raise hackles or gores somebody’s sacred cow is treated as a grave injustice or a threat to society. Online activism culture has lost the vocabulary to express “this deals with touchy stuff in a way many people might find inappropriate, and you should probably avoid it if insensitivity on this subject gets you angry/upset, but it’s not promoting hateful ideas or demeaning people or affecting anything but my opinion of the creator’s sense of tact.”

John Mulaney being one of the funniest standup comics of all time is so wild to me because everything about him screams “closeted gay accountant” and then he gets up on stage and talks about how he murdered Princess Diana and the mental whiplash you receive kills you on the spot

why do people think that planned parenthood is this dimly lit back alley clinic where witches live and they love to just hand out free abortions like…. it’s a regular doctors office. You can get condoms there. I’ve never even seen a witch there

with your support we can ensure every planned parenthood has a certified witch on staff

To be clear:

The two queens of the story both being insane in sexism. Dany losing her mind because she’s experienced loss is sexism. Dany needing a man to “control” her is sexism. Dany being the victim of domestic violence and us being told to feel bad for Jon is sexism. The double standards that Sansa and Dany face is sexism.

This is true no matter if GRRM writes it better or if D&D came up with it out of the blue whilst drunk at 3am.

Dany going mad in the span of three episodes is bad writing. Jaime leaving Brienne because is character arc is a circle is bad writing. Cersei and Jaime being crushed by rocks is bad writing. Tyrion being the good guy who just loves his sister is bad writing. A king being good because he doesn’t want to be king is bad writing. Bran becoming a robot is bad writing.

We don’t excuse sexism because the writing is good.

Being too incompetent to tell when you’re promoting sexism via bad writing isn’t an excuse.

Another season added to the mix, so we weren’t supposed to root for Dany in one episode and hate her in the next would have improved the writing of the show.

It would not have improved the sexism.

NOT TO MENTION the fact that the prohibition against direct images in Islam was actually the reason for the development of the incredible advances in higher mathematics of the Islamic Golden Age because they were required to create these structures. The Islamic World basically took the ban on images as a “hold my beer” thing and created an entire artistic culture based on mathematics and architecture where art and science fed into and glorified each other, 700 years before the Italian Renaissance.

Listen, I know the show is probably never going to have Arya acknowledge that she was cup bearer to Tywin Lannister for a chunk of time, but I desperately want her to drop it casually into her first conversation with Jaime.

Arya, sitting down next to Jaime: I hear you had trouble reading when you were a kid?

Jaime: Where did you hear that?

Arya: Your father.

Jaime:

Arya: I was his cupbearer

Jaime:

Arya: I saw him smile once.

Jaime, whispers: What the fuck.

Arya, shrugging: he also said I was smart. whatever.

Jaime, who has never heard one word of validation from Tywin all his life, struggling to hold back tears: oh ok its ok im ok
