SCHOOL SUBJECTS IN JAPAN(ESE) 教科・科目

教科（きょうか）and 科目（かもく）both mean subject in Japanese, but both are different. Even Japanese people sometimes don’t know the difference (you can look at this yahoo question if your Japanese is good enough). I think example is always the best, so:  Japanese = 教科, Japanese classics, contemporary Japanese = 科目. Math = 教科, math A, math I… = 科目

Easiest way to explain = 教科 is a category, and 科目 is a subcategory.

⚠as u probably noticed, they all end with the same syllable : 색 “색” comes from chinese and means “color”! MOST of the time, you can remove the syllable “색” if the word is placed before a noun.
