Canadian Personification Statistics

Hello hello,

Following a discussion with a few other members of the community, I decided to compile some statistics about Canadian provinces, territories and major city personification, mostly to see which personifications we see the most of and which genders and names are most popular for each. I already did the study on the Personified Canada server ( Which you’re also invited to join if you aren’t already in ), and now I’m putting it here too for other people to participate in! Basically, just fill in the form for the characters you have made, and if you include the name of the character, I’d appreciate if you could put your name too, so I can give credit where it is due Here’s the link: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=DQSIkWdsW0yxEjajBLZtrQAAAAAAAAAAAAYAAAg66AZURThKNTZPNzFIR1JXVlJHMzRRTVBZUjlWQi4u Thank you if you participate! And if you already answered, reblogging the post would be very appreciated!

Canadians right now as Right Wingers take over our provincial governments one by one

Context (in case this post spreads outside of the Canadian side of Tumblr):

Current Ideology of Canada’s Provincial and Territorial Governments:

Blue = Conservative (Centre Right to Right Wing)

Red = Liberal (Centrists)

Orange = New Democratic Party (NDP) - Centre-Left.

Oh and we have a Federal Election coming up in October and the Conservative Party of Canada is lead by a Social Conservative who opposes LGBTQ rights and Abortion, and who openly fraternalizes with White Supremacists and Islamophobes. 🙃

Two of those provinces went Conservative (blue) in the last ~11 months, which really does not bode well for the upcoming October 2019 Federal election.  Under our current electoral system, First Past The Post (FPTP) the votes are counted from East to West, so the election is decided before the (comparatively more left-leaning)  West Coast vote is even counted.

Actually 4 provinces went Conservative in the past year:

Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.

This post really took off, and I’m pleasantly surprised with the responses of concern from non-Canadians.

I’m not trying to be an asshole but 90% of the important Canadian issues that me and other Canadian Politics bloggers write about get routinely ignored by everyone on this site.

For those that want to prevent a Conservative hell from taking over Canada, please follow this blog and the other left-leaning Canadian Politics blogs below, and boost our content. We are all trying to prevent to worst of this from happening and countering the current Conservatives already in power, but we need your help.

Its hard for this message to be spread on Tumblr because of how US-centric this site is and how unlikely Canadian content is to be shared by non-Canadians.

Follow these blogs, and please help us:

Missed an active Canadian Politics blog on tumblr? Please add it below.

Not on tumblr? Good I have a list of 300+ informational and left-leaning twitter accounts that post almost solely about Canadian issues:

This post is getting reblogged again, which I’m happy to see; and I’ve noticed many new followers, so welcome! :) Please continue sharing.

Unfortunately since I made this post another province has gone Conservative…sort of. The Prince Edward Island election was on April 23rd, 2019.

Prince Edward’s Island’s government is still up in the air because no party won a majority of seats (so a coalition or some other agreement may keep one party in power), but unfortunately the Conservatives in that province won the most seats. The only positive is that the Green Party got the 2nd most seats.

Really hoping for a miracle that we can avoid a Conservative Federal Government this fall. I’ll be doing all I can through this blog to help resist this terrible popular wave of Conservatives and push for the most progressive alternatives.

At first, I looked at that map and thought, “that’s not so bad,” then I realized that blue = conservative.

Yeah in Canada Blue is Conservative, Centrist Liberals are Red and our most left party is Orange (NDP).

I believe in the USA the Red and Blue colours are reversed from what they are in Canada.

Also, don’t let the relative sizes fool you, in total those blue provinces account for 82.3% of Canada’s population. Orange is 13.4%, as big as the red patches are they are 4.1% of the population, and the white patches are 0.2%.

So I used to have a Russian friend who had a pretty thick accent and like a lot of Russians tended to eschew articles. She would say things like “Get in car.” And stuff.

Well one day this asshole who had been kind of tagging along with us asks her why she talks like that because it makes her sound dumb and I still remember her response word for word.

“Me? Dumb? Maybe in America you have to say get in THE car because you are so stupid that people might just get in random car, but in Russia we don’t need to say that. We just fucking know because we are not stupid.”

One time I was proof reading a paper for a Russian student. As I was correcting her paper with her, the many mistakes in her grammar started weighing on her. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, almost sobbing,

“In Russian I am so intelligent and clear. In English I am like [an] idiot”

Respect to anyone trying to master a foreign language. I get so sad thinking about that student.

Full offense but people who make fun of someone else’s accent or belittle their limited vocabulary when they’re speaking a language not native to them are fucking disgusting and are just begging to be punched.

They’re speaking your language because you don’t know theirs. That’s not something they should be made fun of, it’s something that should be commended because learning a language is hard fucking work.

I hate people who do this so much.

“omg hetalia is so fun look at all these silly country hijinks! I luv history and teh yaoiz”

Image

“hetalia is a deeply offensive and stereotypical depiction of world history and himaruya is a nazi sympathizer and japanese imperialism apologist and anyone who engages with it is endorsing these harmful views”

Image

“Hetalia’s earlier, crude strips are indeed very inaccurate and insensitive to many world events, especially in its depiction of japan’s relationship with China and Korea. However, there is no substantial proof that Himaruya is a nazi sympathizer or imperial apologist beyond simply regurgitating general Japanese misconceptions of other nations.  Warlike and conquest-centric behavior is portrayed negatively and as the series has progressed the strips have ditched the WWII focus and onto more appropriate subjects of celebrating and exchanging fun facts about various cultural aspects different countries in a way that is more fitting to the light-hearted tone. Also, many (tho not all) of the most offensive jokes seem to originate originally from the Funimation dub, which inserted inappropriate nazi stereotype jokes and weird sexual references that were not originally in the Japanese version”

Image

“While Hetalia has moved away from its initial crude WWII-centric humor, the fact is that there are multiple issues with the portrayals of nations in the canon, and even if they are older strips, people’s concerns should not be dismissed. It’s completely understandable that due to various questionable content in the canon, as well as some of the insensitive, fetishizing, and historically inaccurate material created by fans in the wake of Hetalia’s popularity, some folks would want nothing to do with Hetalia, and fans absolutely need to respect that and be critical of the material they are engaging in.”

Image

“There’s certainly been a lot of cringe-worthy content produced by both hetalia canon and even more so by the hetalia fandom that many of us are all too familiar with. However, people of multiple nationalities and ethnicities have been able to connect emotionally and intellectually with Hetalia, and have used the initial simple premise to research more about history and the customs of other countries, examine their own cultural identities, critically approach the way history is taught and presented to them by comparing nation character portrayals with international fans, and overall just become more aware of the world in a fun and engaging way. Fans have used their creativity to make historical headcanons to repair the inaccuracies and overlooked aspects of the canon, as well as OCs and character reinterpretations for countries and parts of national identity that aren’t represented fully by existing characters. Some people have even used the Hetalia premise of anthropomorphizing countries (which is an age-old tradition that was not initially invented by Hetalia btw) as a platform to launch their own original stories and historical approaches in a way that goes beyond the initial limited Japanese perspective of the original series. All of this is very exciting and it’s perfectly reasonable for Hetalia fans to be enthusiastic about the things being made in their fandom, whichever aspect they are a part of, because of this.”

Now that I’ve gone over some of the factors that cause a nation to age [x], I think it would be useful to go through each one separately. This post will focus on how political autonomy and independence allows a nation to reach adulthood.

Not only that, but what you’ll also see is that they go through growth spurts right before gaining independence; their status as an adult is solidified once this independence is gained. In other words, it’s the resistance that first sparks the aging.

It’s also important to mention that chronologically-speaking, nations will still consider themselves to be older than others, regardless if one of them became an adult first. There are late bloomers like the Italy brothers and quick bloomers like America. The best comparison I can think of is that anything to do with gaining independence is akin to the pubescent period for a personification.

That said, let’s go through some examples.

America:

In the following three panels, we see America go through three developmental changes. In the first stage, he holds a more compliant attitude towards England and helps him in the French-Indian War. Notice the tag of “Young America” attached to him.

This compliance begins to wane as America was heavily taxed and financially drained by England following his involvement in the war. Notice how he’s a slightly older child here.

Then, when America begins fighting for his independence, he’s clearly gone through another growth spurt.

We also see in the years leading up to his independence – as he becomes even more economically and politically sufficient – that he grows pre-emptively.

Lastly, there’s the imagery that Kumajiro uses with dolls to represent England’s relationship with America and Canada. America is the rowdy Baby Bear; put another way, it’s like a teenager fighting for freedom from their parent. Once that freedom is gained, only then will they become an adult.

Canada:

Canada’s growth occurred at a much slower rate than America. He wasn’t an economic powerhouse like the latter. While he remained as a young child, America appears to be in his pre-teen phase.

In the years following America’s independence, Canada ages, but he still has the lanky and awkward appearance of a teenager. He hadn’t yet gained his autonomy yet, the missing factor to the age equation.

Here’s Canada after the Battle of Waterloo.

Pay attention to the roundness of his face.

And here’s him during the war of 1812 [right], vs how he looks in present strips [left]. There’s a notable difference in age.

Likewise, we also know that when Canada upgrades to the semi-dependent status of a Dominion, the autonomy is enough to allow him to reach adulthood.

Italy:

We know that Italy is around the age of a pre-teen during the Austrian War of Succession. He’s not quite a teenager, or at least not an older one given how short he is in comparison to Austria.

During the Battle of Custoza [whilst raging his third war of independence], there’s a considerable increase in age. Once again, we see an example of a nation pre-emptively growing right before they attain independence.

Once Italian Unification is complete, there’s no doubt that Italy has become an adult.

Romano:

Romano’s path to adulthood occurred in the exact same manner and timespan as Veneziano’s did.

He’s around the same age as Veneziano during the Austrian War of Succession.

He’s noted to have stereotypical teenager behaviour in the years leading up to his independence from Spain.

Before independence, he appears to be in his late teen years.

Once unification occurs in the panel I provided above, he’s also clearly an adult.

With all that in mind, it’s important to mention that chronological age is how the nations organize themselves in terms of perceiving their elders. I know this may come across as obvious, but it still needs to be said.

Despite becoming an adult later than America did, Romano still sees himself as older than America and even takes it upon himself to give him political advice.
