Sword carried by Thomas Cochrane as Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy, c1840
“I see I’m not allowed to leave for even a few weeks without Tessa making my life… difficult.”
“Not to empathize with you too much, Nick, because ew, but I feel ya.”
“When you and I see eye to eye, it’s a sure sign that something is horribly, horribly wrong.”
“…Or that you’re standing on a chair.”
“Look who’s talking, shorty.”
“I will pull you down here and make you shut up if you don’t do it of your own volition. I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again–just ask Nicodemus.”
“I’d like to see you try.”
“One thing I will say is that Tessa is perfectly capable of pulling you down to her height. Never underestimate the raw power of a short woman, especially since you’re so weak when it comes to the opposite sex, Dresden.”
“I see I’m not allowed to leave for even a few weeks without Tessa making my life… difficult.”
“I could see you gearing up to say ‘hard’ there and changing your mind. I bet you hoped I wouldn’t comment on it, too. Unfortunately for you, I love making things hard for you and have thoroughly enjoyed twenty centuries of doing just that.”
“Dearest, I can and will have Anduriel temporarily dull my sense of hearing to spare me from listening to your fresh little mouth.”

“Three all-nighters… A new record…” (lionheartedgxrl)
“An unnecessary record.” It was his intent to scold her somewhat for working too hard, but his tone ended up far too gentle for that. So, he gave up on the stern father act in favor of reaching out to lovingly stroke the top of Deirdre’s head a couple of times before pulling her into an embrace. “Sleep, little one. If there is still work to be done, I’ll see to it myself. Rest for now.”
“I said I’m fine,” Deirdre murmured. She hadn’t even opened her eyes when he picked her up. The lack of reaction was partially from exhaustion, but mostly because she trusted Nicodemus more than anybody and knew him on a bone-deep level. There was almost nothing that he could do to unsettle her. “Some coffee would help–” Actually, it wouldn’t. She had already had some in the evening and had barely felt it then. “–but really, Father, you don’t need to fret so much–” A yawn cut her off.
“Just let me finish this one thing and then I’ll go to sleep,” she protested. “I promise.”
He let out an exaggerated hum of mock contemplation before simply saying, “No.”
Walking down the hallway, the only thing that betrayed their true nature was Anduriel’s dark form slithering along the carpet beneath them. Other than that, they looked like what Nic imagined every father and daughter aspired to be; they were trusting and full of unwavering love. It was moments like that when Nicodemus ceased to be the leader of the Order of the Blackened Denarius, and instead existed only as a father.
“Surely whatever you’re working on cannot be so important that it can’t wait until morning. And if it is, then it has no business being left in the hands of someone who’s half asleep.”
“Is this really your plan?!” (From Harry @ idontdohats. And hello! Hope you don't mind the random meme drop.)
“You sound surprised, Dresden. If you react with shock and horror to everything I do, it’s going to be a very long day.” Nicodemus sighed, twisting the gun in his hands to examine it with about the same amount of interest he might afford the Sunday paper. “This will hardly be the first church I’ve destroyed to retrieve a few Coins from. It’s really almost standard procedure for me at this point.”

With a roll of his eyes, Nicodemus raised the folder higher above his head. There were advantages to having such a short spouse, and though he knew she could easily jump high enough with Imariel’s assistance to grab it, the gesture was meant more as an insult than anything.
“And I only had to work, what, maybe thirty seconds to walk in here and take it from you?” He barely resisted the urge to smile. “I think I deserve to keep it as a reward for being so efficient.”
Tessa folded her arms across her chest and glared at him. If he thought that she was above climbing him like a tree, he was about to experience a cruel wake-up call in the form of her putting her elbows and knees wherever they would hurt him most. And then she saw his mouth twisting into the most obnoxious fucking smirk.
“There’s a difference between being efficient and having no stamina, beloved,” she said sweetly. “You happen to fall into the latter category.”
“Now, now, Tessa. No need to resort to childish digs,” said the man holding something out of his tiny wife’s reach for no other reason than to aggravate her. “No need to be angry that I had the good sense to let you do all the work. You’re usually the opportunist between the two of us. You should be proud of me for adopting a bit of your philosophy.”
"You probably have no intention of cooperating, right?"
“If I find your definition of ‘cooperation’ happens to be a hindrance to me or my plans, then no, I absolutely do not intend to cooperate.” He sighed. “I’m not wholly unwilling to work with you, Lash, but you and I have a very different way of doing things.”

Deirdre snuggled into him, letting her eyes slide shut. She wasn’t dead on her feet yet, but she was getting there far faster than she wanted to admit. “You haven’t been sleeping either,” she protested, the complaint somewhat weakened by the fact that it ended on a yawn. “It’s not fair for me to just fob it all off onto you. I’m doing fine.”
He hushed her with a quiet whisper in her ear, a habit he still carried from her earliest years of life. “A week without sleep hardly bothers me. My needs are different from yours, Deirdre. Even if that weren’t the case, however, I’d still rather not see you so exhausted.”
With a little help from Anduriel lifting her from below, Nicodemus swept her up into his arms. It always surprised him how light she was. With her having been an adult longer than some countries had existed, it was an infrequent occurrence for him to carry her. Enough so to surprise him every time with how small she was.
“If you’re going to argue, I’ll just have to tuck you in myself.”
