i thought about it and you know what? i am not particularly happy. they probably thought that they could explore the gray area so gatekeepers won't get mad, but 1) they got mad anyway 2) female custodes imply that the emperor, after all, wasnt a misogynistic fuck who didn't want to give power to women, and it is Just A Coincidence that women can't be astartesized. which lore explanation is more misogynistic - that it is just nature, that women can't be that type of ultra traumatized war machine, or that the guy who created these war machines WAS A FUCKING FASCIST AND MISOGYNIST IN THE FIRST PLACE and tailored the system so that women won't be allowed to have overwhelming firepower to themselves? think about it even so, i still like to see real life misogynists angry. keep it going!

This is about where I'm at with it as well. When you consider why GW did it, I'm at a loss for why they thought this would be an effective way to solve the issues of sexism in the hobby. That issue (while it has been getting better) is still deeply entrenched. It, at times, can extend to their actual staff at GW stores ignoring women by not checking them out or discouraging them from buying any product. Addressing that would take a huge effort, which they don't seem inclined to do, but I imagine it would be more effective.

They also did the rollout as sloppily as possible. A friend pointed out that this seems like them testing the waters with a 'minor' faction before rolling it out with the Space Marines. Retconning the change in it also super lazy and keeps them from having to own or explain it in the lore. The Custodes took huge losses during Lion's Gate, why not try to make female Custodes to stem the bleed and go from there. But that, again, takes effort.

There's also the fact that they had to have guessed- or I at least hoped they would have guessed- that this would cause a massive backlash against women in the hobby. GW is under no obligation to prep for that, but they could have maybe chosen to stagger the release of this and the pride flag Kill Team marines so that it didn't drop and piss off a group that's already all riled up.

And finally- and this has been my problem with canon Space Marines/Custodes from the beginning- is that it allows them to continue to ignore the Battle Sisters/Sisters of Silence/female characters elsewhere. When someone asks 'hey can we see more female inquisitors/SoS/SoB/Navy/Guard?', they can point to new canonical female Custodes and go 'but you have female rep'.
