Fanfiction Appreciation post
I haven’t actually been reading fanfiction that long, maybe since February? And I’ve only been writing it since April after the big consummation scene in Nanda Parbat. Arrow is the first fandom I’ve been in that caused me to crave more of the characters than was on the screen. So here’s my short list.
Unwoven Threads by so-caffeinated - This appears to be only a one shot, but I’d love to read more of the unresolved Al Sah-Him in Oliver (outside of canon) and how Felicity handles being handled by him. I tend to be a sucker for ambiguous mental health, i.e., characters who may or may not have their mental shit together enough to make you nervous.
My Love Has No Beginning, My Love Has No End by mmefabiola - Worried, nurturing Oliver was perfectly done here, and I liked seeing a practical, non-medical pregnancy problem being tackled. It was a bonus to have a Laurel/Oliver interaction that had moved beyond anger/disappointment/grief as well.
The Old Familiar Sting by confidentialityspice - A meaty, angsty exploration of how Oliver feels when Felicity gets hurt involving guilt and practical devotion. Some really good Diggle stuff here as well.
Let Go by alicecoldwater - This was good smut, but it was also a great exploration of the emotional impact changing friends to lovers has on their perceptions of each other and themselves. Hot and well done!
Nightmares - by ash818 - This short story was the inspiration for the story I wrote months and month later, Кошмар (Oliver’s Nightmare). I was just so touched by how Felicity and Oliver had worked out a practical and compassionate workaround for an ongoing problem without a real resolution. Seriously, I enjoyed this author’s Legacy Verse very much, but I’ve read this story a bunch of times and sighed. It stayed with me.
Times Like These by anthfan - This was the first full-length piece of fanfiction I read, and it sucked up a full Sunday afternoon. I could not put it down. Very suspenseful. At one point I was nearly overwhelmed by my feelings for this story. Seriously, I got THAT feeling in my throat, like I couldn’t breathe.
Little Black Dresses and King-Sized Messes by machawicket - I’ll mine the comment I already left here: “ This made me laugh in the beginning and cry at the end. I think it’s my favorite Olicity fic EVER, tbh. Why couldn’t we have this on the SHOW? This was like the best kind of Arrow episode. Little violence, lots of sex, a smug Diggle, a fun mission, and no Laurel.”
That’s my short list. I may add more later.
