“Actually I do,” Emmett replied, “I was small until puberty. Then I shot up, believe me I was picked on a lot…” he paused, “not just for my size but it made it seem easier for the bullies because I was little.”
“Unfortunately,” he held up one his arms, making a muscle, “I didn’t get bulky in the process…just really skinny.”

“I prefer a lean build anyway,” Kevin stated. “I’d rather not trample around with a bulky body. Definitely not elegant...” When he went to sit on the edge of the bed, he swayed his legs as they didn’t entirely touch the floor as much as Emmett’s. “If you shot up, then hopefully I’ll shoot up.” He gazed at Tosca and smiled softly to himself. “The last thing I want is Tosca outgrowing me,” he chuckled.

Laura smiled, “you are quite a charmer, aren’t you?” she almost made to kiss Kilgrave on the cheek, but remembering Trish, she settle for an air kiss, “Thank you.”
Ashe sighed in relief as they reached Carver’s place. She didn’t like to admit to fear, as she was trained to hold it in, hide it, but she had been afraid the entire time they were out on the road.
Stopping the car, she looked at Jim, “I don’t know what kind of reception you’re going to get…but I’m guessing it won’t be with open arms.”
“I’ll keep him in my sights here,” Carver said after a brief pause. He hated the idea of Jessica and the baby leaving him for any length of time, but he also knew she had a life, “you can help when you’re here.”

Kilgrave pointed a finger towards himself as he regarded laura with a questioning look. “Me?” he asked genuinely. “I was only stating the truth. Look at you: exceptional doctor slash researcher trying to make a positive change on the world. Any decent parent should be proud of you.” He unbuckled his seatbelt and glanced out the window. Much to his mild amusement, he was relieved to see the house in one piece.

“Well, there’s always video calling,” Jessica thought out loud. “You know how to initiate a video call on your phone, right?” she teased. She heard the rumble of an engine outside and her head perked up upon instinct to peer out of the window. “Wow, about time...”

“How old were you when you smoked your first cigarette? We’re still developing people and you could have stunted your growth. Or even worse… damaged something inside,” Kevin scolded. “And as for the ‘other things’, I don’t even wanna know what they are. But something tells me they’re not good and I don’t have the effort to get annoyed right now. Maybe tomorrow.”

“You’re going to give me shit about things I did before I even knew you?” Emmett snorted, “That’s really unfair, who made you my guardian angel anyway?”

He gestured at his long lanky form, “do I look like I’m stunted? I’m over six feet tall, if I did stunt my growth, I’m glad, who the hell wants to be a giant?”

“Hey, I’d do anything to get tall,” Kevin argued back. “You’d never understand how it feels being one of the shortest boys in the class at five foot and a half. If I could grow as tall as you, I’d feel great about myself.” He huffed softly to himself. “You could be a bit more grateful... I’m counting on your tall height being a gene thing...”

Kilgrave shrugged nonchalantly, evident that he had lost all attention on Jim. He studied Laura. “I suppose you could say I’m quite wary. But I can’t let that pull me down now. Carver says that once I’m down and pissed off, everything else around me gets pissed off,” he chuckles ruefully.
“The world has gone upside down if Emmett Carver tries to be optimistic,” Jessica teased. She curled up into his side and rested her head upon his chest. “Shall we give Simpson another chance? We go down there and hear what he says. What he says will be his final decision…”

Laura nodded, “my dad was like that…mad at one person; mad at the world. It was hard understanding that as a child. My mother would piss him off and then he’d be downright nasty to me, I spent a lot of time thinking I was a horrible child.”

“I will try not to do that too often,” Carver teased back, “it does seem to freak people out when I am.” He then flashed a grin, “smiling has the same sort of effect.”

He looked towards the basement, “I would say; let’s offer it, I won’t force him to, but I think it would be in his best interest. Let’s face it; we are the only ones who will give him a second chance.”

Kilgrave features softened. “Parents are the worst,” he sighed. He set his food on his lap, a little put off. “I’m very sure that you weren’t a horrible child. You would have been a great one to say the least.”

“True,” Jessica chuckled ruefully. She brought her knees to her chest and rested her chin upon them. “If he agrees, how the hell are we gonna do it? I stil have my job back in New York...”

“I caught him with cigarettes,” Roger shook his head, “and other things…” he made the universal tsking gesture.
“Thanks for ratting me out,” Emmett folded his hands across his chest, “nice….”

It was Jim’s turn to be annoyed, honestly he felt like he was captive and under appreciated. Not a great combination really. “Everyone else was sharing,” he sniffed, clearly peevish.
“I’m fine, a little tired, stressed and ready to be out of this van,” Laura mustered a smile, “how are you holding up.
“Me too,” Carver admitted, “I am not an optimist by nature, but I am trying to be…” he rubbed his tired eyes, “Maybe in vain…”

“I’m proud of you, that’s great to hear,” Roger’s smiled paternally, then shot Emmett a reproving look, “you’re right, smoking is bad for you, tobacco and other substances, don’t start…”
Emmett rolled his eyes, and made the universal “blah, blah, blah” gesture with his hand.
Roger laughed, “nice…”

Kevin gaped at Emmett. “You’re not actually planning on smoking that stuff? ... or have you already done all that?” he snorted. He turned his attention back to Roger. “Don’t worry, old man. I’ll keep an eye on him.”

“My mom,” Jim started, then quickly added, “I’m living at home with her because she needs my help, not that I HAVE to live with her,” he stopped then continued with his original line of thought, “is on the Keto diet thing. Nothing like cakes or cookies until she finds a new fad diet to try.”
“I honestly think he wants to be respectable again, but with that shit in his system he’s thinking with his addictions, not his brain,” Carver replied, “he could be that hero cop he was before all of this…honestly his record while he was on the force was pretty amazing….but I probably don’t have to tell you that, you already researched him I’m sure.”

Brow raised, Kilgrave regarded the man with a slightly annoyed expression. “No one needed to know that, Jim,” he deadpanned. He proceeded to eat his cupcake in contentment, licking his lips and looking back at Laura. “Are you okay?”

Jessica shrugged nonchalantly. “I get that he was a war hero and all that. It’s just that I really hope this works,” she sighed. She looked in the direction of the closed basement door.

Kevin pretended to look innocent as he hid the diary underneath him, glancing at Roger as he did so. “I’m alright…” He watched the man ruffle Emmett’s hair and couldn’t help but feel a little envious of their interaction. He casted his gaze downwards, absently playing with Tosca’s fur. “Are you going to bed now?”

“Should I even ask what you just slipped under yourself?” Roger queried, his studied eyes catching Kevin’s movements easily. He ruffled the younger boy’s hair too, careful of mussing it too much as he knew how vain he was, “or should I pretend I didn’t see it?”

He walked slightly to the doorway, “if it’s a cigarette, or something else with smoke,” he winked, “open the window out of courtesy, please.”

He yawned, “yes I’m turning in, you two should soon too…” he waved as he opened the door again, “I’m right across the hall if you need me.”

Kevin blinked, surprised that his hair had been ruffled. In that moment he feared that Roger would have felt the scars littered across his scalp and would have pressed him with questions. It seemed he slipped away from that and oddly yearned for some more little affectionate gestures. “I never smoke,” he stated simply and firmly. “Never will. That stuff is toxic.”

Kilgrave quirked a brow at Jim’s input. He made a mental decision not to say anything as he proceeded to eat his cake and look out the window. “I suppose you can have some cake, too,” he said absently, not looking at anyone else as he said it.
Jessica looked in the direction of the basement. “Were you serious about allowing him to join your ranks if he helps us and we help him?”

Laura smiled and fished a cupcake out for Jim, a lemon one with a swirl of vanilla butter cream on top, “here you go,” she said as she handed it back to him. With a quick thanks he fell upon the treat as if he hadn’t eaten in days.

“Of course I am,” Carver replied, “he had a sterling rep as a beat cop, I mean yes his time in secret ops got him a little messed up, but he worked to gain that all back. I think he has it in him to do it again, with the right carrot on a stick, he can be that good cop again.”

Kilgrave took a sideward glance at Laura, eyeing Jim as he did so. He licked his fingers clean and settled for another cake without really thinking about it. “You look like you haven’t eaten in days. Do they even feed you in IGH?”

Jessica snorted at the mental image. “The right carrot on a stick... it’s always the picky eaters that are the worst to deal with...” She sighed and folded her arms as she rested her feet on the coffee table. “He should be counting his lucky stars.”

Kevin silenced and followed the other boy’s gaze. Also spotting the shadow underneath the door, he felt Emmett’s wariness and he stiffened. Surely they couldn’t have been found already? He pulled the blanket closer to his face as he tried to keep quiet…
“Who’s there?” he suddenly blurted out loud.

“Nice ruining the element of surprise,” Emmett rolled his eyes as he opened the door to see Roger standing there, “boo…” he declared as he swung it open.

“I was just coming up to say goodnight, I heard you talking and didn’t want to interrupt,” the older man smiled, “and boo back to you…” he laughed as he ruffled Emmett’s already shaggy hair.

“Are you boys comfortable? do you need anything?”

Kevin pretended to look innocent as he hid the diary underneath him, glancing at Roger as he did so. “I’m alright...” He watched the man ruffle Emmett’s hair and couldn’t help but feel a little envious of their interaction. He casted his gaze downwards, absently playing with Tosca’s fur. “Are you going to bed now?”

Kilgrave carefully tore off the bottom of the cake and presented it to Laura. “You’re one of those who doesn’t like frosting, huh?” he mused. “I myself am a big sucker for frosting…” As he said that, he took a big bite from the top side of the cake. “This is not bad… I might pay a visit back to that place in the near future.”

“I like frosting….” Jim offered, knowing that they were not really talking to him but feeling like he needed to add that into the conversation.

“Next one, I’ll give you the top,” Laura replied.

Simpson sighed. He was being offered redemption, and part of him was tempted but he was also angry at everyone, including himself, for this indignity. He rolled over onto his side wondering if Kilgrave would be easier to convince than his brother.

Kilgrave quirked a brow at Jim’s input. He made a mental decision not to say anything as he proceeded to eat his cake and look out the window. “I suppose you can have some cake, too,” he said absently, not looking at anyone else as he said it.

Coming up the stairs, Roger could hear the boys talking. He smiled at how they seemed to be getting along at last. Leaning closer to the door he listened as Emmett replied.
“I’ve had OK croutons, but those prepackaged ones…Styrofoam packing peanuts have about the same taste,” Emmett pulled a face, “I like toast, but croutons…no.”
He noticed a shadow under the door and pointed to it, with one finger pressed to his lips, indicating that they should be quiet. Every nerve on edge he quietly got off the bed and inched his way to the door.

Kevin silenced and followed the other boy’s gaze. Also spotting the shadow underneath the door, he felt Emmett’s wariness and he stiffened. Surely they couldn’t have been found already? He pulled the blanket closer to his face as he tried to keep quiet...

“Who’s there?” he suddenly blurted out loud.

“I know I do,” Ashe offered, “get me in a nerve wracking situation, and give me a tube of Pringles…that’s all she wrote…” she laughed, “although, sometimes it’s a two tube problem.”
Laura couldn’t help but be touched at Kilgrave’s concern, conceding a little, “could we split it?” she asked, “I could go for the bottom part, without all the frosting.”

Kilgrave carefully tore off the bottom of the cake and presented it to Laura. “You’re one of those who doesn’t like frosting, huh?” he mused. “I myself am a big sucker for frosting...” As he said that, he took a big bite from the top side of the cake. “This is not bad...
