Whumpee woke up; their body's burning. They feel streaks of liquid dripping down their limbs and chest. Parts of their skin feel cold, exposed and open.

"There you are," Whumper smiled, moving whumpees hair out of their face with a bloody knife.

"You passed out on me."

You know what I love? When characters are almost unconscious, but not quite.

Slumped over, a complete ragdoll in the others’ hands, but alert enough to groan softly at different sensations, eyes hooded and glazed, just wide enough to gather a blurry image of their surroundings. Though they’re dizzy and their limbs feel like lead, they gain comfort in the others’ touch, unconsciously leaning into them, eyelids fluttering in hazy relief at the soothing, concerned gestures. 

tired of characters who put up a tough guy act only for it to be a facade. tired of characters whose marker of love is that they start acting softer. i need characters who get worse. ruder. meaner. i need characters who get rabid and possessive when they love someone. please let me have my disgusting mean characters i am begging you i need these people to step on me not to tell me "uwu i'd step on everyone but you bc i loooove you"

"Who is that?" A voice asks.

"I don't know, found them like this. Do you think they're going to make it?"

"I-... Just look at them. Who would do something like that-?"

The voices dissipate as whumpee groaned and scrunched their face. They find they're unable to open their eyes.

The voices remain silent, but whumpee can feel frantic movement around them. A hand takes the back of their head and leans them up. Pain spikes through a head as they wince. They were about to groan, but a warm spoon got pressed through their lips.

"It's just soup. Please, drink as much as you can, you'll need your strength. I know you're in pain. It'll pass."

Whumpee manages to open a single eye. Someone is crouched over them supporting their head. Another sits not far behind, holding a steaming bowl filling the room with a savory scent.

"Their eye is open." One whispers.

"That's a good sign, but I hope they just sleep this off. Just look at them... They must be in so much pai-"

That was the last thing whumpee heard before drifting back off to sleep.

Presumed Dead

This might be a niche interest but personally I love when a kidnapped character has been mia for months, maybe even a few years, to the point when everyone else in their life has basically run out of gas trying to find them. They've tried everything. No leads. The authorities have stopped searching, everyone has called it quits. They've all mourned and grieved and cried, but basically they've all started trying to pick up the pieces and move on with their lives.

Only for the bad guy who captured the kidnapped character to whip them out as the ace up their sleeve in a negotiation when their own back is up against the wall. And not even prefacing it with a "Would you like your friend back?" or a "What would you do if I told you X was still alive?" Just showing up to the negotiation with X in tow, bound and gagged and in what is clearly an agonizing amount of pain, but somehow they're still breathing, after all this time...

this is probably an overdone trope but a personal fave of mine: whumpees with concussions

whether it’s from an explosion/accident or just a plain ol bonk on the kitchen counter. they’re my JAM

when the whumpee wakes up they’re confused and nauseous and disoriented and out of it. they’re not quite sure where they are or what happened but they do know there are gentle hands guiding them to sitting and muffled voices speaking to them

when the whumpee can’t vocalize anything except for ‘’my head hurts” because it does and they feel the unexplainable urge to tell the people around them that, maybe in hopes that someone will do something to ease the pain

whumpee being so exhausted but they aren’t allowed to sleep because it’s dangerous until they can get proper medical attention so caretaker (very reluctantly) has to keep resorting to increasingly uncomfortable ways to keep them awake (ex: slapping, pinching, shouting, shaking), which leaves whumpee whimpering and crying softly

when whumpee finally does get to sleep, it isn’t even that restful because caretaker has to wake them up every four hours and when they do they are greeted with the pitiful whines and groans of whumpees who just wants to rest

Delirium or fever or concussion or exhaustion playing havoc with a character's sense of time so that the flow of events gets a bit slippery and they have no conception of the length of time passing- the companion tending to them steps out for just long enough to brew a cup of tea or fetch another blanket and returns to a character sure they've been abandoned, left to fend for themself, drowning in loneliness-

I absolutely love when a character is trying to hide injuries or just how sore they are by moving around like normal. They’ve perfected walking without wincing, ignoring the pain as they sit down or stand up, maybe even running.

But then as soon as they’re out of sight, the second they make it home and the door closes behind them, they just collapse to the floor in tears.

The white-knuckle grip of a character grounding themself whilst enduring the throes of extreme pain; clutching the bedframe- tangled sheets- a companion's hand- the arms of a chair- loam of the forest floor- hem of a jacket- handful of carpet- fingers clenched tight as a vise and tendons straining.
