HOPE

A/N: This is a commission I did for the lovey and amazing @vangilst. It contains heavy themes, so reader discretion is advised.

And please, always remember there is always hope. Even when it seems like there isn’t, even when giving up seems to be the best way out, there will always be hope.

“She made broken look beautiful and strong look invincible. She walked with the universe on her shoulders and made it look like wings.” -Who knows?

( I’m seriously asking)

…………..

Judy remembered crying.

Sitting on the floor of one of her best friend’s bedroom, with Sharla Woolington and a few of the doe’s sisters as she just cried. Judy couldn’t grab the other bunny’s paw to comfort her. They were still freshly scraped and tender; not bleeding anymore but not yet scabbed.

Judy remembered crying

So much crying as she, Sharla, Tara, Hope, and Maggie tried to let her know it wasn’t her fault. Tried to let her know the bruise on her thigh from where he had flipped her wasn’t deserved. Wanted to let her know that ‘no’ meant ‘no’: NO to dislocated ears and strained neck. NO to clothing being rustled without consent. NO. They wanted to assured her that her voice will come back, and she will want to use it, will use it, no matter how meek it was right now.

But through it all, through the comfort and compassion and silent presence they gave for their friend, their sister, when eyes met they all shared the same two words: Dumb Bunny.

Judy remembered crying.

Except, this time she wasn’t on the bedroom floor of her friends bedroom in Bunnyburrow. This time she was at the Urgent Care center not far from ZSU. And there were no scraps on paws. Just a bruised swelling of her wrists where paws had gripped. Paired with a lip that split on her front teeth as he tried to muffle her and a dislocated leg, crying was the only thing she had strength to do. The pain between her legs wasn’t just physical.

It was a gong.

Loud and booming and radiating through her body as a constant reminder. And it echoed one word through to her very soul.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

The nurse managed to reset her leg. Now it just ached and was stiff. Ice was given for her wrists and lip with Sharla looking on with worry. The crying had stopped. For now.

The young deer doe who was attending her babbled about test and procedures and support groups, as the bunny sat on the table. She heard the words but it was as though she was underwater. It seemed as though she wasn’t part of her body. Like the pain she felt wasn’t really hers, just someone else’s she had been burdened with for a while. Because things like this didn’t happen to good little bunnies like Judy Hopps.

Because she was a good little bunny. Straight ‘A’s, dean’s list, well on her way to graduating at the top of the class in criminal justice, an irony not lost on her. She spent her whole life studying a lot and partying very little, not much of a drinker. Not after what happened to Mary. Though she wasn’t a virgin, Judy put the physical side of romance on hold. Too many dreams she wanted to achieve.

There was nothing to suggest knowing him would lead to where she was now.

It had been just a study session. Nothing fancy, little to no flirting, Judy making it clear that she didn’t see him as a sexual partner. Her jeans and pink flannel, both permanently stained with dirt from the farm, were a dead give away. Or at least they should have been. She showed up at his dorm room, weighed down with books for their accounting class, ready to work on acing the test coming up.

They were having a good time quizzing each other, exchanging banter and the like. So when he leaned in to kiss her, she had shoved him away with a laugh only slightly uncomfortable. It wasn’t until he did it again that confusion set in. She push away and stormed to the door. Only to have him grab her shoulders and force her down.

“Next time,” the nurse’s words pulled her from her thoughts, “be smarter about who you hang out with and where you are.”

There was an angry bleat from the other side of the room.

“Be smarter?” Sharla stepped forward. “Are you saying this is her fault?”

The deer gave the ewe a dismissive look before turning back to Judy.

“Bunnies are all about sex,” she explained as Judy’s eyes widened in shock. “It’s all part of your genetic make-up. It’s not like it’s his fault he enjoys it more than other mammals. And whether you mean to or not, you have to start working on the vibe you’re putting out. Otherwise, you’ll have the same results from other bucks. What did you expect to happen?”

Both students stared at the nurse, the ewe looking ready to attack while the doe just gaped.

“I expected to study……” Tears filled her eyes as she shook her head. “I expected to get some assignments finished and go home after hanging out with someone I thought was a friend.”

With a sigh, the nurse handed her a prescription and a flyer. “This is for some pain reliever. And this the information on the support group.” She turned to the door, Sharla staring daggers at her. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a bunny complaining about getting laid. I’m not sure how much good the group will do, but it’s worth a shot.”

And with that, she was gone, leaving a fuming sheep and traumatized bunny staring after her.

“Bitch.” Sharla muttered. She turned to her friend. “I swear, I will have her fired for this. No one deserves this, Judy. EVER. We need to go to the police.”

“We can’t do that.” The ewe opened her mouth to protest, her expression exasperated. Judy placed a paw on her muzzle to stop her words. “Remember what happened with Mary?”

There was a pause at that, followed by a nod. When their friend had gone to the police, the officers had questioned her for hours about her claim, only to write the instance off. Like the nurse, they tightly held to the belief that no bunny would turn down a chance at sex. So Mary was obviously lying. Another loose bunny doe who regretted her choice in partners.

“I’m just ready to put this behind me, Shar.” Painfully climbing off the table, she limped to the door. “Tomorrow’s another day. And it can’t get much worse.” …………

But it did.

For weeks, Judy tossed and turned in bed at night. The physical pain faded as the days went by, but there were reminders everywhere. She shared two classes with the creep and found she couldn’t even bring herself to pass over the threshold to attend them, let alone the rest of her schedule. One day, in a moment of resolution, she did.

Only to stop just inside the doorway. The lecture hall wasn’t huge, just big enough for about fifty mammals of various sizes to fit into. Most of the students present were medium sized, with few exceptions. Two of which caught each other’s attention almost immediately.

His face grew smug as they met eyes, a slight glitter of triumph in the buck’s. When his friends followed his gaze, they laughed and slapped his back. Their stare broke when he grinned at them, loudly bragging about his conquest to them. Judy did something she had never done before.

She turned and ran.

Her frantic pace carried her several halls away from the lecture hall. Around corners, through doors, past other ZSU students, straight outside to the small student garden. Thankfully deserted, she pressed her back against the wall by it’s entrance and slid down. Frantically, she tried to control the panicked breath coming out in gasps. Nausea and phantom aches had her swallowing around the lump in her throat as her eyes flooded with tears.

Closing them, she took a deep breath, trying to center herself away from lecture hall back to the present. A gentle clearing of someone’s throat had her opening her eyes to see an unopened water bottle held out to her. She followed the length of it, to the large brown paw it was held in, to the pair of concerned green eyes watching her.

“You look like you need this.” A tall red fox todd gave a smile as she reached for the bottle.

Accepting it, she gave a shaky smile in thanks as her fingers fumbled with the cap. Some spilled over her shirt as she gulped the refreshing liquid, feeling her heart beat slowing as her panic attack subsided. Casting her eyes back to where the todd had been, her ears shot up in shock when she realized he was gone.

If it weren’t for the fact she was clutching the still cold water bottle, she would’ve thought she imagined him. Another gulp was taken, this one slower, as she straightened. Her ears were dropped down her back as she moved further into the garden.

Falling to her knees, she let herself cry again.

In the days that followed, Judy felt like she was living a surreal version of real life. The support group she went to didn’t take her seriously, those who attending scoffing at her story. With looks of exasperation, her fellow survivors informed her the group was for actual victims. Not for bunny does who were obviously lying about how loose they were. She was slowly but surely edged out.

After all, bunnies never turn down sex.

Sharla made a point to check in with her on a regular basis, even sending her links to therapists that could help her. But Sharla was well on her way to becoming the first ewe astronaut and couldn’t be there as often as she wanted. More often than not, Judy found herself giving a simple, generic answers to her questions, least she worry her already over worked friend.

There was a therapist she suggested that listened without questioning the validity of her story, though with the cold detachment of a professional. All she received out of the sessions was a prescription. Judy debated on going to the only other bunny she knew would understand. But Mary had long since left Bunnyburrow and hadn’t left her contact information.

It spiraled further when a young pop star came forward with accusations against her manager. The young gazelle stood at the podium of the press conference she organized, looked her attacker in the eyes, and said ‘enough’. And the outcry she sparked made any hope Judy had started to feel dissipate.

There would be trail, of course, the manager’s attorney suggesting she was lying about the whole thing to cover up their affair. No one else stepped forward and the assault was ongoing for the past few years. So why step forward now? With the media coverage of the young starlet, came very vocal opinions Judy’s ears couldn’t block out. Accusations that she was lying, she should’ve dressed better, why didn’t she speak up sooner, she was eager to jump from bed to bed.

All of them made Judy’s stomach turn.

Turn to the point where she gave up on sleeping. Lying awake held no appeal, so she took to the streets. Until the early hours of the morning she walked around Zootopia, the city she had dreamed of for years. It didn’t stop her mind from working overtime. But it did eventually make her body so weary she fell asleep almost instantly when she got back. Not that she slept very long.

Her feet were the ones who decided where to go. Sometimes they paused in front of the Natural History Museum, it’s polished stone almost regal under street lamps. Other times it was in front of Precinct One of the Zootopian Police Department, where Judy, at one point, wanted to join. Part of her still did. The bitter part that wanted to see that disgusting slim bucket rot in cell for the rest of his life.

But that dream seemed to be a lifetime away.

Now, however, she found herself in the Rainforest district at nearly midnight. She was blocks away from her dorm room at ZSU in front of a shabby dinner that screamed greasy spoon. The sides lined with glass windows revealed nothing more than a long coffee bar and a few tables, with it’s kitchen just behind the counter.

Mostly empty, save a few souls hunched over their plates and some staff, she pushed the door open. The bell attached caught the attention of the fox behind the counter whose eyes were angled to the tv screen just above him. He turned to greet his new customer, green eyes widening in recognition. She paused slightly, remembering the small moment of kindness. With shy wave she stepped forward. Taking a seat at the coffee bar, the fox slid a mug in front of her.

“Never thought I’d see you again,” he greeted. When Judy didn’t respond, he tried again. “I think I have accounting with you.” That got her attention. “But I haven’t seen you in class lately.”

“You go to ZSU?” She asked in a soft voice.

He grinned at finally getting a response. “Sure do! The owner of this place is about to retire. Promised to sign it over to me after I graduate. I’m Nick. Nick Wilde.”

He held out his paw for a shake, causing her to flinch at the motion. His ears fell back as he withdrew his paw. Moving to grab the coffee pot, he turned back with a forced smile. She looked up as he silently filled her mug. One dark furred paw slid a menu next to it.

“Anything else I get you, Fluff?” He asked. “I only mean to brag a little, but we make a mean stack of blueberry pancakes.”

“Thanks,” Judy murmured back. “Just this for now.”

Her attention went to the drink in front her only to look back up. The fox’s green eyes were still on her, brows furrowed as they studied the doe. With a slight shift under the scrutiny, her ears dropped as one of her paws picked up the mug for a cautious sip. And tried not flinch again when he lightly placed a paw over the one still resting on the counter.

“You ok, Fluff?” He asked the question quietly.

For a moment she wondered if he thought it was because of his species that had her edge. Maybe he thought it was aloofness she was displaying, someone too good to converse with the help. Freezing at the idea, she looked from his eyes to his paw. An itch started under her skin that made her decide she didn’t care. Not when the touch of another was causing bile to rise in her throat.

Firmly tugging away from him, she nodded and looked back down. Nick gave her one last inquiring look before sighing and moving down the counter. It was for the best. He seemed to have a decency to him that he shouldn’t waste on someone broken like herself. Better to let him think of her a speciest bunny than risk hurting what little she had left of herself.

“I always knew she was a slut!”

The loud, rude voice had everyone at the bar looking to the speaker. Greasy, with reddish brown fur covered by a ratted white shirt and apron, the weasel who spoke adjusted the bus bucket he held and pulled the toothpick from his mouth. He scowled back at the tv screen and went to load the dish washer.

“Duke, you don’t even know her!” Nick gave him a disgusted look after he glanced back up at the re-play of the press conference.

“Maybe not, but I know her type.” He argued. “Pro’lly begged him for it and when he dumped her, ran around claimin’ she never wanted it.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything more despicable, Weaselton.”

The weasel whirled around with paws on his hips and sneered at the todd.

“Assuming he did do it, what did she think was going to happen?” Duke argued. “Runnin’ around dressed like she was. Those fuckin’ mini skirts and crop tops, and all that leg showin’? Would ya expect a shark to ignore blood in the water?”

Judy’s eyes moved from the weasel to Nick, surprised to see a look of disgusted anger on his face.

“But he isn’t a shark.” He said with a calm that made her shiver. “He isn’t a savage. And he isn’t some untouchable god! He’s a living, breathing mammal who’s expected to understand the basic concept of consent, ‘no means no’, and that actions will have consequences. She could run around naked and it still isn’t an invitation for anyone to mount her!”

Three females at the bar whooped and applauded, much to the weasel’s annoyance. He rolled his eyes and continued his work.

“Yeah, yeah,” he grumbled.

The todd rolled his eyes back at him, before starting a fresh pot of coffee.

“That was so sweet,” purred a lynx from her seat as she batted her lashes at him.

“We need more young males like you!” Agreed an elderly armadillo female with a smile.

“If it were my daughter, I would tear him limb from limb,” growled a wolf in construction gear.

Nick shrugged and looked uncomfortable with the praise. Adjusting his apron, he pulled the finished pot from it’s place to move down the line for refills. As he passed by Judy, she reached a paw out towards his arm. Pausing, he looked down at it before back up at her.

“Thank you,” she said quietly, holding his gaze. They held each others eyes for a bit, understanding dawning over Nick’s face as they did.

“You’re welcome.”

“I’m Judy.” She said with a small smile. “Judy Hopps.”

He smiled back and gently pulled away from her to finish work. Her paw went to her pocket to pull some bills out, but her efforts were waved away.

“It’s on me,” he explained.

“I can’t-“

“Yes, you can,” he smiled again. “And in exchange, you could go to class tomorrow. I’ll save you a seat.”

Judy’s hesitancy must have shown in her face, because Nick walked back towards her and leaned forward with a soft expression. “To show them- all of them- that even when they try to break you, they will never get to you.”

He pulled back and gave a firm nod.

“And never let them see it when they do.”

Something stirred in her chest at his words.

Ever since that day, there was an oppressive feeling of hopelessness that seemed to envelope her. She couldn’t sleep, she had trouble eating, the anxiety she always had to a certain degree returned tenfold at the worst times. Even with medication, she could feel herself drifting to the edge of………….. something.

It wasn’t until the next day, when she walked into her accounting class to see Nick sitting front row center, did she recognize what it was: Hope.

Hope that was very nearly extinguished by the quiet laughter from the back of the class.

Right where HE was sitting.

HIM……….

With his cronies, who were leaning in to whisper and laugh with each other as they looked at her.

She felt herself shrink, ears falling, and a panic attack setting in before she looked away, her eyes accidentally falling back to the todd. He gave her a warm smile as he patiently waited. A smile that said he would accept it if she couldn’t go further into the room, that he wouldn’t think less of her. A smile that said if she left, she wouldn’t be a dumb bunny in his eyes. And he would be waiting for her when she returned.

Hope.

Taking in a breath, Judy strode forward. Her steps didn’t stop until she was at the desk next to Nick, his paw reaching over to pull his bag off the seat. He beamed at her as she sat. Returning his smile, she turned just in time for the teacher to enter and the lecture begin.

The class passed by without incident, the bear teaching having zero tolerance for interruption. Side by side, they took notes, Nick occasionally repeating what was said in a funny voice so low only Judy could hear. But the teacher definitely heard her snorts of laughter.

She glared at the bunny but continued. For the first time in weeks, Judy wasn’t weighed down. They stood up together at the end of class and walked to the door, deaf to the jeers from the creep and his friends. Nick let her pass through first, causing her to miss how he back stepped and swished his tail. It tripped the buck behind him, causing him to stumble and fall. The action was so subtle it was easy to dismiss as an accident, though the todd shot a smug smirk over his shoulder at him.

Judy turned to him when he caught up with her, a smile on her face as he did.

“Walk you to your next class?” He asked.

She considered it for a moment before giving a decisive nod. “Please.”

The answer made the fur on him puff in delight and his tail wag behind him. Enjoying the company of the other through out the whole walk, they made easy conversation and, all to soon, found themselves in front of her criminal justice class.

“Here we are……..” She said, turning to look at him.

“Here we are.”

“Thanks Nick. I….. I don’t think I can ever thank you enough.”

Laughing at that, the todd shook his head. “Thank me by sitting next to me again. And maybe………..”

He looked down at the floor in a moment of shyness that had her repressing the ‘AWWW’ that wanted to come out.

“Join me for breakfast? Tomorrow, in the cafeteria?” Looking up with a hopeful smile, he tensed as she processed his request. Her smile faded at the question, with the sudden memory of the last time a male had asked a seemingly innocent question like that. “Say eight thirty? It’s busy then, so plenty of mammals around. And we don’t have to be seen outside of it.”

That made her laugh, before she decided. “Okay, sure.” Still uncertain, she moved towards the door, doubt in the pit of her stomach, but hope not fading.

With a wave, she entered the class, knowing the todd was watching her with a look of joy on his face.

“Miss Hopps.” Came the deep gruff voice that cut through her thoughts. The doe froze and looked over to her professor, the cape buffalo pulling his reading glasses from his muzzle when he met her eyes. “You’ve been absent the past five classes. I’m afraid you may be too far behind to catch up.”

“Oh, I- uh.” A hoof was held up to stall any explanation.

“Don’t care.” He commented. Standing, he walked around his desk, ignoring the sight of the other mammals filing in and taking their spots. “I’ve been teaching you since you were in your first year. You came to class when you had pneumonia and again when you had the flu. Is there anything I should know about?”

She looked up at him, ears back and eyes large. Part of her wanted to tell him her story, but the idea of her favorite professor dismissing her- or worse- had the words dying before they left her mouth. He waited in silence before nodding and jerking his head to an empty seat.

“Try to keep up.”

Rattled, Judy sat through the entire class, barely keeping track of what the others were discussing. The flicker of hope Nick had sparked was growing dim, making her feel as though she was starting to drown once more. Concentrating was already difficult enough, but now she didn’t even have the notes needed to at least try to understand.

Just give up, came a treacherous voice.

You’re already lost. Once Nick finds out how broken you are, he’ll drop you. Or blame you. Just give up…………..

There, in her mind’s eye, that little spark faded more…….

Only to be reignited by the packet of papers slid on to her desk. A shaky paw went to pull them in front of her and she barely kept in her tears. Five classes worth of notes, neatly printed, in order. She looked up in surprise as Professor Bogo walked past, not acknowledging her. But when he caught her eye, he gave her the faintest of winks.

And that fueled her spark and made her think she just might make it. …………..

In about two weeks, her days fell into a pattern.

She would wake up, shower, change, check her homework was where it should be, and go to the cafeteria. Nick would already be there, even though he lived off campus and was only taking two classes. He would have a paper in paw, with the funnies set aside, and her favorite breakfast of apple muffins and strawberry jam with a carrot latte waiting.

The fox would boom a good morning to her in a silly voice, ask her how she slept, how long she slept, and make sure she ate all her food. They would laugh and banter until they had to go to class. Nick walked her to the door and told her to have a good day. At this, she began to notice he always stood a bit closer.

When she realized it the first time, it triggered an anxiety attack. Nick had quickly slipped off his hoodie and placed it in her paws, using it to guide her to a bench to avoid touching her. Together, they worked past the worst of it and he promised he would maintain the distance again and let her know if he was going to try standing closer.

And he did.

In the evenings, she found herself at the dinner, schoolbooks spread out as she studied and worked on homework. More often than not she ignored Duke, Nick doing what he could to keep him away from her. Not that he spared her a glance, but his crass behavior was a bit too much for any one mammal to put up with.

When she felt her eyes go cross from her workload, she would hop behind the counter and learn the menu. Nick took great pride in his kitchen, everything made from the freshest and best ingredients.

“So why not spruce the place up a bit if you’re going to put that much effort into the food?” Judy asked one night.

“Because I’m all about discovery,” he explained as he mixed his pancake batter. “Taking chances and risks. Even if something looks beaten down, doesn’t mean something great can’t still happen with it.”

His paw came to rest next to hers. Judy looked up at him with a smile, only to find his face was stoic. “Because she’s not broken. And she’s not damaged. I think she’s the most amazing thing I ever saw.” He leaned in as much as he dared and grinned. “And it can only get better from here.”

And it did.

Little by little, the gap was bridged. Close proximity became soft brushes of arms or elbows. Sometimes, Nick’s tail would wrap itself around her legs in a what she dubbed a ‘fox hug’. At her pace, with her permission, they worked through. And after a few weeks, with the end of the school year getting closer, a decision was made. The routine they built was so comfortable, she was feeling as though she was ready to move one step further.

Judy woke up one morning deciding she was ready to hug him.

Only he wasn’t at their table.

Puzzled, she stood staring at it, as though he would materialize if she did. But he didn’t. Panic started to bubble up, threatening to spill over as her breaths became sharper and more erratic.

NO.

The thought invaded her mind so suddenly it startled her out of it. And it sounded surprisingly like Nick.

You’re hungry, it said. Her stomach growled in agreement, paws snapping over it to muffle the noise. So go eat.

And that’s what she did.

Not an apple muffin, but rather a veggie sausage biscuit sandwich. And it was delicious. After she finished, she went to class. And paid attention to the teacher, the creep mercifully absent. Criminal justice was next, Professor Bogo handing back a paper of hers with a ninety five percent on it. The proud smile he gave her helped ease the anxiety she felt and Nick’s voice helped her keep one paw in front of the other and her head held high. Until she got to her final class of the day.

He was there.

In the back row.

Laughing as always, paws being used to tell his friends what he got into the night before. Or rather who.

Judy looked to the floor and carried on to her seat. Her laptop was pulled from her bag, notes opened, and her assignment already emailed to the professor. She was ready for class to start. Only to be derailed by him taking a seat next to her. She tensed as he leaned in, feeling as though she sank into a bath of filth when he spoke to her.

“Why, Judy Hopps,” he said with a leer. “If I didn’t know any better I’d think you were avoiding me.”

Keeping her attention on her computer, she forced herself to go through her notes to block him out.

“Ooooooo,” he groaned before grinning, “I love it when they act high and mighty. Do I need to show you who’s boss again, little bunny?”

Freezing over her keyboard, she felt herself start to shake. Though it wasn’t with fear, like she thought. It was with rage. Her paw balled up and before she could think twice, her fist went flying. She hit him hard enough to send him off his seat onto his back, landing in heap as he clutched his nose. Everyone in class stopped what they doing to gasp at the scene.

Their teacher stood in shock, looking from the buck on the floor to the doe with her fist still raised, knuckles scrapped and face expressionless.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” The buck shouted angrily through his paws. Blood seeped from them, her eyes narrowed more at the sight than the question.

Her paws made him bleed.

She hurt him, if only in the physical sense.

“Just taking out the trash,” she said.

Commotion at the front of the room had everyone looking towards the door. Two large polar bears in police uniforms ducked into the classroom and raised their eyebrows at the sight.

“Thank fucking gods!” The rabbit stood up and strode to them. “Arrest that fucking bitch! She just punched me and I have a dozen witnesses who saw it”

“Jeremy Bush?” Asked one.

Blinking, he looked up, paw still trying to stem the flow of blood.

“Yeah?”

Another officer, this one a badger, stepped between the bears’ legs extracting a pair of pawcuffs as she did.

“You’re under arrest for sexual assault and battery. You have the right to remain silent……”

Wrists were gripped painfully as the larger mammal jerked his paws behind his back. Judy could only watch as he struggled while being read his rights and hauled out the door. In a daze, she left her seat and walked behind them, catching sight of a cream colored bunny standing teary eyed with a shrew on her shoulder.

Nick stood not to far from them, his face somber, as the buck and officers disappeared from sight.

“Daddy will make sure he pays, darlin’,” the shrew said, stroking the bunny’s cheek. “We’ll make sure he gets what he deserves for what he did to you. I promise. And thank you, Nicky, for letting us know where he’d be.”

“Of course, Fru,” he said. “I’m just happy I could help.”  Nick turned his focus from the arrest to Judy, his eyes soft as he seemed to drink her in.

They stood in front of each other, eyes moving over the other, before she dashed into his arms. Flinging them around his neck, he gave a grunt of surprise, before wrapping her up in a tight hug. He held and rocked her as she buried her nose into his neck and silently cried. There were whispers of how sorry he was for just vanishing and promising to never ghost her again.

“Dumb fox,” she sobbed. “That was a risky thing you did today.”

“I’m a risk taker,” he argued back, stroking her ears. “And I would have never done this if I thought you couldn’t handle it.”

“So you went to the police?”

“No. An old family friend wanted to congratulate me on the dinner.” He explained. “When I was at his place, I heard Fru Fru Big talking to her friend about that buck, and she sounded upset. I didn’t give any details but I let Mr. Big know where he could be found today.”

“How did you know-“

“I know everyone, Fluff. And I know you two got along well until you suddenly stopped showing up for class.” Nick pulled back and framed her face, a thumb catching a tear as it fell. “All I wanted to do was tear him limb from limb. But I can settle for watching Zootopia’s Godfather destroy his life.”

Her bottom lip was chewed as she thought about his words.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” he observed. “But if you’re willing, you won’t have to do it alone.”

“What if it takes forever?” She asked.

“Then I’ll wait forever.”

She hugged him again, feeling his nose press into the fur on top of her head.

“I don’t think you’ll have to, though.” The statement made the todd laugh quietly.

“I trust you, Carrots.”

Nick didn’t have to wait forever. Some days were harder than others, some days Judy wondered why he put up with her. But through it all, she healed. Scars were left, wounds she knew would always stay raw to some degree, but as the days past she was able to keep moving forward.

If asked, she always said it was because of Nick that she was able to move on. Nick, however, corrected that notion, saying Judy’s power of will is the secret to her healing. Eyes were always rolled at that. But sitting at the coffee bar, dressed in her police gear, watching her mate charm his customers, she silently thanked him.

Thanked him for caring. Thanked him for listening. Thanked him for giving her what no-one else could.

Hope.

depression tips™

  • shower. not a bath, a shower. use water as hot or cold as u like. u dont even need to wash. just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. sit on the floor if you gotta.
  • moisturize everything. use whatever lotion u like. unscented? dollar store lotion? fancy ass 48 hour lotion that makes u smell like a field of wildflowers? use whatever you want, and use it all over.
  • put on clean, comfortable clothes.
  • put on ur favorite underwear. cute black lacy panties? those ridiculous boxers u bought last christmas with candy cane hearts on the butt? put em on.
  • drink cold water. use ice. if u want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost.
  • clean something. doesn’t have to be anything big. organize one drawer of ur desk. wash five dirty dishes. do a load of laundry. scrub the bathroom sink.
  • blast music. listen to something upbeat and dancey and loud, something that’s got lots of energy. sing to it, dance to it, even if you suck at both.
  • make food. don’t just grab a granola bar to munch. take the time and make food. even if it’s ramen. add something special to it, like a hard boiled egg or some veggies. prepare food, it tastes way better, and you’ll feel like you accomplished something.
  • make something. write a short story or a poem, draw a picture, color a picture, fold origami, crochet or knit, sculpt something out of clay, anything artistic. even if you don’t think you’re good at it.
  • go outside. take a walk. sit in the grass. look at the clouds. smell flowers. put your hands in the dirt and feel the soil against your skin.
  • call someone. call a loved one, a friend, a family member, call a chat service if you have no one else to call. talk to a stranger on the street. have a conversation and listen to someone’s voice. if you can’t, text or email or whatever, just have some social interaction with another person. even if you don’t say much, listen to them.
  • cuddle your pets if you have them/can cuddle them. take pictures of them. talk to them. tell them how u feel, about your favorite movie, a new game coming out.

So I was really worried like “I hope they cleaned up this weird mess, this could be unhealthy for the ocean,” but it turns out this IS ANIMATED!???

Hell no, someone HAD to give up their soul to make this- just like the guy who made the realistic animated honey video I saw a while back.

Prompt: Judy comforting Nick during a panic attack (maybe over muzzles or a nightmare? idk up to you ofc)

Alright, better start working on theses…I have a lot to do.

—-

It all started with the Junior Ranger Scouts came to the Precinct for a tour.

Something that happened somewhat regularly.  There was a troop stopping by at least once a month.  Precinct One is a pretty big attraction for troops to visit for a pawful of different reasons.

But it’s not the kits that get Nick.

No, they never bother him, because their kits.  That and he rarely ever has to spare them more than a wave in passing.  He leaves the stopping and talking to Judy, she had more than enough optimism for the both of them.

Rather, it’s one of the leaders.

Something about them triggered something.  He didn’t know if it was a scent, their voice, or what exactly.  Something rang true with the back of his mind.

All he knew was he was just back in that meeting.  Back in that muzzle. Hurt and crying.  And he can’t breathe.

He turns tail instantly at the sensation.  Hurrying off as he fights the memory from just sucking him back in.  He tried to assure himself that it was nothing to get worked over, something that happened over twenty some years ago.  But the feeling of cold metal is all around his snout.

He ducks into the darkness of a room.  Practically collapsing in the room, because he’s damn paws are so sweaty.  Gasping for breath he seeks out the darkest part of the room.  Darkness is hidden. Darkness is comfort.  Darkness is safe

The fox curled up underneath a desk, shivering at the sickening cold of the metal.  Willing his heart to just stop pounding in his chest.  But he’s nine and back in the middle of kicking, muzzled, scared and defenseless.  He just can’t get out.

Nick…” a voice distantly calls through the memories.  “Nick, you’re alright.  I’m here, I got you,”  the voice is soft, familiar, safe.  Easing into the memories, easing the pain of the kicks, as the young mammals start to fade out ever so slowly.  “I got you, Nick.  Breath with me, and come back to me.  You’re okay.”

The voice repeats the words ever so softly, till the memories fades and Nick starts to feel his senses return.

He looked up to find Judy lightly cradling him as she stood in front of him.

“Judy,”  He breaths dumbly in relief.

“Yup,”  She returned her familiar chipper tone ring true, but her voice is still soft.  The rabbit moved her paws to wipe the tears from Nick’s cheek like it was just dust or crumbs from lunch.  “I saw you hurrying in the opposite direction of the Junior Ranger Scouts.  You okay?”

“Uh…yeah.”  Nick answered weakly, completely content to just sit there looking at her.  But he moved to wipe his wet cheeks and sweaty paw pads.

“Wanna talk about it?”

“Later,”  Nick breathed, as he leaned back against one of the desk legs.  He knew Judy will never push him to talk about this, she’ll worry but never press.  “Can we just sit her for a while?”

“Of course.”  Judy agreed as she moved to sit next to him.
