Only a few hours left to bid on 22 original drawings of actor Matthew Macfadyen... the bid is currently only at £10 with one bid. 20 % of sale will go to the charity Shelter UK, to help the homeless. I am selling these to make more space in my house. Tonight I am going to check for photocopies in the folder, and add extra drawings, so that for each copy, I will add another original drawing of Matthew M, so the total will still be 22 originals. The photocopies are extra on top of that. Click the photo link above to have a look, and if you would like to bid, please do, and help Shelter UK. I will post to anywhere in the UK and Europe.

RECOMMENDED VIEWING ON CATCH-UP TV:  “MURDERED FOR BEING DIFFERENT”

If you haven’t yet seen Murdered For Being Different, which was first shown on July 13th, we highly recommend this drama. Starring Abigail Lawrie and Nico Mirallegro, it tells the true story of the hate-crime murder of 20-year-old Sophie Lancaster who in 2007 was kicked to death in a park by a gang. Her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, was also severely beaten and ended up in a coma. The two of them were attacked because they were dressed as goths. Abigail and Nico have great chemistry on screen during the drama, which poignantly juxtaposes scenes of Sophie and Robert’s happy, romantic relationship against the horrific attack which killed Sophie and left Rob with multiple injuries.

The cast give some superbly real performances, and Sally Lindsay is worth mentioning for her empathic portrayal of Robert’s mum, Tracy Maltby, especially in the hospital scenes with her son.

This drama needed to be aired, if only to raise awareness of hate crime which singles young people out for the way they dress, and bullying of any kind, for that matter. It is a fitting and beautiful tribute to Sophie Lancaster, her intelligence and creative talents; and the happy three year relationship she had with Robert Maltby.

If you would like to see this drama there are still three months left to view it on BBC iPlayer See link below, where you can also find clips and interviews:

Set to be a TV Drama Multi-Award Winner: The Handmaid’s Tale

If any book deserves the in-depth dramatisation of a TV series, it’s The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood; and this TV series on Hulu and Channel 4 truly delivers. Set in a future dystopian nightmare, The Handmaid’s Tale follows the story of Offred, a woman who was captured, separated from her husband and son; and forced to live a life of (sex) slavery, to have babies for the barren wives of powerful rich men. It’s a very tense kind of futuristic thriller / horror story, which has some shocking things added by the TV series. Those additions bring the book bang up to date, and make us realise that if we do not guard our civilization’s freedoms, such a future might not be too far away.

Offred is brilliantly played by actress Elizabeth Moss, who keeps your attention by saying so much with her face even when silent in a scene. When in line with other handmaids, her rebellious demeanour is subtle but always there, in the intelligence of her eyes or a dour sidelong glance at the “aunties” who control the fertile women.

It’s also worth mentioning the powerful, visceral performance of Alexis Bledel, who plays Ofglen / Ofsteven, a character who (without giving away any specific spoiler) goes through some grievous things that no woman should ever be forced to endure.

I am also very impressed with Ann Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia with a chilling mixture of softly-spoken kindness alternating with sudden cruelty, exerting control on her handmaids with seamless ease. She portrays not a stereotypical villain; rather a woman who is doing her professional duty, whilst trying to be a kind “auntie” figure at the same time, as if she knows how the handmaids suffer; but does not wish to risk her job by being too sympathetic towards them. At times, she exudes an air of terrifying menace even while speaking softly to her charges. She seems at times like a cross between a school headmistress and a Gestapo commander. It’s fascinating, mesmerising and absolutely spine-chilling. Yet the crazy thing is, she looks so much more pleasant and prettier in her IMDb photos, that you might even walk past her in the street without knowing her, even after watching the show. This is the magic of acting of course; to be able to completely change yourself into someone else.

As depressing as the story can sometimes be, The Handmaid’s Tale is full of awesome suspense, with an undercurrent of fragile hopes for a better future for Offred and her friends. If you haven’t seen it yet, seek it out on catch-up TV and I promise you will be gripped from the start.
