He stays by her side through out it all. Some moments are touch and go, where he’s genuinely frightened that their daughter will grow up without her mother, but Mary pulls through eventually. The doctors tell him that they just need to wait for her to make a full recovery. He’ll never be so thankful for anything in his life, than when he saw Mary wake up.
“ Don’t frighten me like that again, okay ?? Please. I was so scared that I’d lose you, ” he confesses, as he stands over her. “ Anyways, I thought I was the one who takes the unnecessary risks. ”

John hands Rosie over to Victor, who is instantly enamoured with him (as always). He’d normally sit and watch the two for a while, but he has much more pressing issues at hand.
“ Victor, we have a problem. We were at the park earlier on today and she was playing with boys. They were all so impressed with her, and why wouldn’t they be ?? She’s just like her mother, she’s beautiful and she is so smart. But she’s so young !! What’s it going to be like when she’s older ?? She has my genes Victor - anything could happen !! ”

It’s a nice change of scenery being on a case with Enola, even if the two have been pressurised by Sherlock to go undercover for a case he had hoped he’d not get involved with. Something about watching over an ex-army officer who had taken a bad turn had at first seemed a little too close to home, but John now finds himself addicted to finding out more information about the man. And working with Enola is always fun, so he knows that the day could be spent in a worse way.
The two are sitting in a Starbucks (which John knows he stands out in because he’s so old, which hurts him to admit) and are watching the man in question, getting ready to order. John turns to Enola, his black coffee in hand. “ If he orders another one of those drinks that doesn’t even sound real, I am done with this case. ”

i’m still here !! i really want to get back into the swing of things but i have zero muse and it’s extremely hard for me to focus on anything but how bad my writing has gotten. but i just wanted to say hey and that i miss you all dearly. <3
Q stood in the doorway for a moment as his gaze fell on John, he half grinned at the other and nodded his head once as a lax greeting. “Ah, not here because of Mycroft, actively avoiding him if we’re being entirely honest… Don’t mind if I come in?”
John laughed at this, as he nodded his head. “ Well luckily for you he never shows up here unless Sherlock is in trouble. Although, that happens more than you could imagine. ” John stood up, making his way to the kitchen. “ I’ll make you a cuppa. So what have you been up to ?? ”
Whatever Sherlock had been expecting, this was definitely not it. The letter was official, he could tell that off the bat, but he still found himself looking up at John —— waiting for some punchline to a joke he didn’t understand but would still smirk to for his sake. Yet none came. He had been watching John struggle with something that he just hadn’t seemed to want to share. Normally, Sherlock would have taken it upon himself to investigate and learn on his own —– but something had stopped him this time. Premonition perhaps? A sign somewhere that had subconsciously told him that this wasn’t something he wanted to find.
Yet there it is, in black & white in front of him, an official summons from the British Military. They wanted to take John away from him. Okay, he knew that wasn’t exactly what was going on —- they were well within their rights to request this of John & he knew him. There was no way that John Watson-Holmes could deny Queen & Country. It was just who he was. A part of him wanted to be angry, hurt that John would even want to leave but Sherlock could not summon it. This was John, how could he hate a man for being the very thing he fell in love with? He wanted to ask him to stay. He wanted to demand it. If he had his way, Sherlock would turn the entire flat, & perhaps all of London, upside down in an attempt to get John to stay.
But that wasn’t fair to John —– & Sherlock loved John.
Sherlock stood by the mantle, the letter glued into his hand when he wanted nothing more but to never see it again. It took all his patience not to slam it down on the mantelpiece when he finally got the strength to let go. What he didn’t understand is how John sounded so cavalier about it all? They lived their lives together in danger all the time; but this was different. They wouldn’t be together. John could very easily go & not come back & Sherlock wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. How could he talk so matter-of-factly about it? The knife struck right in the center of it. The only words he could formulate being a near childish sounding: “ no… no it’s not fair. it’s not! ”
There was something so painful about watching Sherlock react to this. Sherlock Holmes was a man who knew how to solve everything, yet he couldn’t find a way to solve this. John knew that it wasn’t going to be easy for Sherlock, especially with their daughter in the equation, but he needed Sherlock to be there for him.
“ It’s not fair, but it’s life. ”
John knew he was being harsh, so he stood beside his husband. He placed his hand on Sherlock’s back. He’d miss this, he wasn’t sure how he would last those few months without Sherlock by his side. A day started without waking up to his beautiful partner by his side was not one he wanted to go through, but he wouldn’t have the pleasantries of that in Afghanistan. He’d be lucky to get a regular Skype call with him.
“ I don’t know if they would have asked me if they saw how old I’ve gotten. What good can I be anyways ?? ” he laughed, softly, as he looked up to Sherlock. “ I know I can’t promise anything substantial, but I can promise that I will try my best to get home. I love you, and I love the life we have together now. And I will fight to get home to you. ”
John stood away, his hand falling down to his side. “ I need to call them, to sort everything out, ” he explained, as he started to walk away. “ I knew him, and I know how much he’d want me to continue on for him. I don’t expect you to understand, but I have to do this for him. ”
