I know I’m like, never around here anymore, but yesterday was the 6 year anniversary/birthday of starting this blog and even if the media tied to its origin is very tainted and unfortunate- I am SO grateful to this blog and community for all the love and support you’ve shown me over the years. I am especially thankful for the people that starting this all those years ago has brought into my life. There are honestly too many to name, but I hope you all know who you are and that I love you ❤️ also, HAPPY PRIDE!! 🌈

I know andromeda gets custody of teddy after remus and tonks die but exhausted and confused single teenage dad harry is actually something that can be so personal,

after 5 consecutive panic attacks over a misplaced shapeshifting baby on a muggle playground harry enlists hermione to knit the most outlandish baby clothes possible so there's never a chance of him matching another kid

babies aren't supposed to have meat until at least 6 months old but its a full moon and he's got a 2 month old half-werewolf snarling for a bite of his steak and he's really wishing wizards had google

oh God and we KNOW teddy is gonna be even more accident prone than tonks ever was....the second he starts walking harry's on red alert. his apartment is padded like a gym. so many instances where teddy will be safe on the ground and harry will look away for a SECOND only to turn back just in time to see the baby falling head first off the top of the fridge

SKDHDKK he takes him to the zoo one time and teddy pulls the vanishing glass accidental magic harry did when he was 10 only on the exhibit with wolves in it and hops right in while harry is just like

the iconic scene from full house where jesse and joey destroy the kitchen in their panic while trying to change a diaper, only it's harry and ron and it's only like 3 days after the war ended and hermione is laughing at them so hard she actually throws up

harry: can't have ptsd night terrors if I never sleep because my godson spends all night howling at the moon 😎

his wizard therapist who is trying her goddamn best: okay....but,-

CW: Loss, bereavement

I was hoping to have more information before I made this post, so apologies for that. The news is starting to seep onto the platform though, as people share tributes as a way to process their own grief, so I think it’s time.

@siriussly-serious (he/they), mostly known here as Jay but also as Blu, Royale (in drag) and Jaxon, has passed away. Little is known at this point, other than that he was missing since Monday (10th May), reported as missing to the police on Wednesday (12th May) and found yesterday (15th May). This isn’t the right place for speculation, so I will have more to say when I have more information.

Although he hasn’t been active on the platform for a long time, Jay was a much loved member of the HP RP community. He was particularly an inspiration for LGBTQ+ creators and POC, going out of his way to encourage and promote anyone who felt they weren’t good enough or didn’t belong. He had so much love, which he handed out freely and sincerely to anyone and everyone who needed it. He created Found, a ridiculously ambitious project which I was privileged enough to be a part of, and which he was unfortunately unable to see through the way he desperately wanted to. Jay would want me to tell you he was 6ft7, everyone was welcome to the gun show and the cheaper and higher percentage your rose wine is, the better. He wouldn’t want me to gush about what an amazing singer, performer, drag artist, RPer, artist, writer, Muddy, creative and friend he was, but tough shit mate, come and stop me. He loved cheap rose, gin, rum, milkshakes, white chocolate, Beyonce, drag kings, queers being queer, people living their best life, Hamilton, cuddles, sandalwood incense and salt lamps (but not when he wasn’t allowed to lick them). So if you want to celebrate him in your own way, there’s some ideas for you. Just stay away from whisky and any other kind of chocolate. No thank you, ma’am.

I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in person with Jay over the last 3 years, but to those who never met him, your grief is just as valid. Your friendship was real, your love and loss is real. He loved you, he was proud of you every day you went out into a world that tries to tell you you’re broken or not enough. You are enough, and Dad is watching over you.

Jay had a large online presence, particularly in the drag king community, so I’m sure there will be some online tributes and possibly events. I will reblog this post adding information as I get it, including any tributes and donation information for those who can and would like to.

Rest in Power, Jay. It won’t be the same without you.

Because I sincerely believe that even if Dumbledore could leave baby Harry at the doorstep for a night- the Mcgonagall I know would’ve stayed behind, crying silent tears over the loss of her two students, and holding the infant in her arms.

In the morning when milkman arrived, he was rather amused by seeing a tabby cat sitting by a small bundle..

Dear HPRP Community,

It’s been a long while since I’ve posted. I’m sure most of you have seen @sirussly‘s post by now, but I really want to say a few words myself.

First, I want to thank everyone who has followed, supported, encouraged and shared this experience with me. When I started the HPRP community, I just wanted to goof around in my room playing dress-up. I honestly never in a million years thought it would grow to become something that I care so much about.

The past four years have been some of the most incredible and fulfilling years of my life. I’ve made life-long friends, I’ve produced content that helped me express my love for art and creativity and grow as a person, and I’ve had the chance to share it with people who care for me personally and support me every step of the way.

I don’t know how to thank you all for helping me become who I am now and providing me with a chance to do what I love for a living. I’m endlessly in shock over how lucky I am to be able to do this, and I’m so, so grateful.

These last couple of years I’ve fallen in love, made wonderful, honest friends, sought out help for my mental health, produced four original series, turned 30 (wtf???), trudged through the hell-scape that is 2020, and so much more. It’s been eventful, to say the least, and I’ve grown a lot as a person. I think that’s why it’s time to say that I’m moving on, at least for now.

This blog will always be one of the best choices I’ve ever made, and it will be here for those who want to enjoy and revisit the stories my dear friends and I have created. I’m sure Jess and I will pop in every now and then to say hi, but I think it’s important to clarify why I won’t be around much anymore.

I know I can always come back, but making a post like this on a blog that has been such a central part of my life for so long definitely makes me a lot-a-bit emotional, so I hope you don’t mind if I come off a wee-bit dramatic (guess it fits with the brand, huh?). ;)

I just want to say thank you for all you guys have done for me. I’ve loved this experience through the highs and lows, and I hope to see you guys around as I continue this journey elsewhere.

Feel free to follow me if you’d like, I’ll still be around (@ttbret on IG, TikTok, YouTube, and Patreon).

Love you all! <3

Hey, I saw your post about Lavender Brown being cast as a white actress because she became a main character, but it was actually most likely due to the fact that until HBP, she had never been given a physical description, so they cast as they saw fit, but in HBP she is described as pale, so they recast her as such. Also because Lavender's first actresses were background and lineless, they were never really assigned a character, only the name so that they can be kept track of during filming.

no they don’t. that’s a lie. that is a lie popularised by a post on tumblr that claims Lavender HAD to be recast because the books describe her as pale-skinned and that is just literally, 100% factually untrue. the closest the books come to describing Lavender’s skin is that the narration comments that it was hard to tell where Ron’s hands ended and Lavender’s began, which is clearly a comment on them being insufferably handsy rather than her skin

i will concede that Lavender was definitely envisioned to be white by Rowling (Joanne, being the racist pile of shit she is, always mentions in narrative when she envisions somebody to be a person of colour) but the movies had fucking cast two different black girls to be Lavender at that point and it makes zero difference for her to be white other than for her to be a sweet cutesy pretty white girl which is.... fucked.

anyways, i’m tired of this completely made up and racist myth about the Harry Potter books.

also it wouldnt MATTER if the book flat out said “lavender brown is white” because theres no point in re casting a role that you already have an actress for, it isnt as if her physical appearance would have made any difference to the movie. its literally just racism

all of this. thank you for your addition 💗

“Have you stopped doing HPRP?”

This is a question that is repeated over and over again in my tumblr inbox, something I haven’t looked at in more than three months.

Hi, it’s me. I haven’t been around in a while.

If you happen to follow me on my other social platforms, you’ll know that there’s been a huge amount going on in my life for the past 3-4 months, things that don’t even involve a global pandemic or crippling social crises.

Me and TT announced a short while ago that we are in a relationship, something I’m sure most of you have heard by now! Unfortunately I also had some pretty serious health problems ( thankfully now on the mend ) that I was dealing with. I’ve been going to therapy and spending more time with friends and navigating a long distance relationship in a time where most international borders are closed.

Also, my disgust at the author of Harry Potter has made me very reluctant to make content that furthers her legacy and the world she created.

All of these things have contributed to my absence on here, but most of all, I’m making different content now.

The past year TT and I have written, filmed and produced three original series for our TikTok channels, two of which are more than 30 parts long, definitely the biggest and most ambitious projects we’ve done so far! My audience has expanded and all of my time is currently spent managing my Patreon and wider content, a job that is both stressful and one that I am immensely grateful for.

So, have I stopped doing HPRP? For now, I think so. The content I make now is primarily video-based and allows me much more creative freedom than gif threads do. Have I stopped making Harry Potter content completely? I’m currently undecided on that one.

I do hope there will be a point in the future where our love of the Harry Potter universe is preserved and it feels like a safe space for the people the author has caused so much pain and hurt towards. But I also feel like that is a hard thing to do currently. I definitely have had much of the joy I felt towards Harry Potter replaced with a lot of sadness. And I’ve always said, I will never make content that doesn’t make me happy.

I hope to make Harry Potter content again, I really do. I’m sure me and TT will return here once in a while to do an online ask session, and perhaps I’ll post any threads on a platform like Patreon where people who really want to see it can do so, but people who don’t feel comforted by it any more aren’t subjected to it. I’ll have a think on that one.

This isn’t a goodbye at all. Feel free to continue to send me asks, I’ll answer them whenever I pop back on here. I am still very active on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. If you want to follow my content, that’s where you should go.

I am so incredibly proud of the HPRP community and the stories it has produced for the past 5 years. The content I’ve created for it will always be here for you to look back on and enjoy if you wish. I hope it continues to live on for those who still wish to be a part of it.

Thank you for all of the support you’ve given me in the past and continue to give me. This platform truly changed my life and provided me with the best friends and partner I could ask for. Whatever happens, for me it has left a beautiful mark with wonderful memories on the world.

Love, Jess.

You never showed up before.

I’m sure I’m going to get yelled at or tone-policed for this post, so let’s start here: spare your fucking breath.

But if you feel you must rant back at me, read the whole fucking post first.

A few years ago, Black Harry Potter fans pointed out the lack of Black characters in the books. If memory serves me, there are two–Kingsley Shacklebolt and Blaise Zabini. One is a Death Eater. The other one is literally a man named after a kind of prison chain. And fans went “well Jo supports Black Hermione headcanons and she was played onstage by a Black girl!”

A few years ago, Black readers expressed concern over how Rowling portrayed S.P.E.W., and the concept of house elves being slaves. People dismissed this as being because the house elves are based on the folkloric brownies–and while this is true, there was absolutely no attempt to show why Hermione was wrong beyond “lol silly girl, wanting to free the house elves,” nor was any attempt made to show why the treatment of Dobby and Winky was wrong beyond “well their masters were Slytherins what can you expect.” Black readers’ concerns were dismissed.

And a few years ago–around the release of Cursed Child was the first time I encountered it–Black fans pointed out that Lavender Brown was Black in the movies … until she became Ron’s love interest and was recast as a while girl. People got kind of mad and then forgot about it.

Over a decade ago, Jews pointed out that the goblins were antisemitic stereotypes. They were largely ignored. More recently, these pointings-out have been gaslit, ahistorically waved away, or the critics have been threatened.

About four years ago, I wrote a piece about why Snape is an antisemitic stereotype, and why, while he’s fascinating as a character, his narrative is extremely concerning within the context of being framed as Jewish-coded. I was largely ignored, except by Jews. I was still a gentile at the time and even so I was told by other gentiles that I was imagining things–or that I was the one stereotyping Jews by recognizing the negative stereotypes in the work, so maybe I was the bigot, huh, how about that.

A couple of years ago, someone actually took Rowling to task on Twitter about there being no Jews in the books. Her reply was “there are plenty! Anthony Goldstein is Jewish!” Anthony has no spoken lines–his biggest interaction with any of the main cast is shooting Harry a dirty look–and his Jewishness is not mentioned or shown anywhere.

I can’t be sure when I started seeing this, but as a onetime Harry Potter fan myself, I can say for sure it was within a year of Deathly Hallows the book coming out: criticism of the fact that the only gay character in the books turned out to be a master manipulator who was in love with a Hitler parallel, was in charge of children, and was actively grooming a young boy. (Later criticisms have been angry that Dumbledore was never mentioned as gay in the books. On that one, I have to give Rowling a very begrudging pass–even if she’d found a way to bring it up, in 2007 it would have been censored right back out.) And yet other than the occasional stray comment, that criticism has largely been ignored.

LGBT activists and gay men have been outraged since 1999 because Rowling stated that lycanthropy was supposed to be a corollary for AIDS. Ah, yes: because AIDS makes its victims turn into deadly, feral beasts once a month but causes absolutely zero other health problems, and it’s most commonly spread by ill actors who know they’re poz and deliberately infect others. Yep. Sounds accurate to me … not.

Twenty years ago, Chinese-American readers and Chinese-British readers pointed out the racism inherent in the name “Cho Chang,” which sounds quite close to the racial slur “ching-chong” (and also is not a real Chinese name). They were ignored. At best, their legitimate grievance was trotted out as a “tsk tsk” addendum when the focus on Rowling’s anti-trans views started coming to light.

When the background lore for Fantastic Beasts came out, Native American readers were horrified by what Rowling did with their culture. I don’t think I can even list all of their complaints here because they were so many, so myriad, and it’s literally easier and more to the point to just say “she was lazy and clearly did not do a single line of research, ever, at all, and did not get anything right, at all, and in fact got a lot of things very offensively wrong.”  People got mad for about five minutes and then forgot all about it when the movie dropped.

Readers with ties to the African continent were also horrified, by the way, because supposedly there’s one magical school for the tiny little islands of the UK and also one magical school for the biggest continent on earth. The many cultures, languages, and the basic geographic impossibility of this were all ignored by Rowling and her publishers–and fans, who got mad for five minutes and then forgot about it when the movie dropped.

When it came out that Nagini was some kind of snake woman, being played by a Korean actress, some fandomers pointed out that it was really fucking gross to have a Korean woman trapped by a man who then “impregnates” her with part of himself. Among other things, it’s at best an unfortunate parallel with the Korean “comfort women” of WWII. (translation: Korean women who were raped and tortured by Japanese soldiers.) People got mad for about five minutes and then forgot about it.

At some point–again, Potter has been in my direct or periphery for such a long time that years start blending together–Rowling made a statement about how the reason there are no disabled people at Hogwarts is because they’re “fixed” by magic. There was basically no outcry at all.

And now that Rowling’s rabid anti-trans views have come to light, you want to pretend you never knew she was a terrible bigot.

You’re showing up for trans women. As you should. Good job, have a gold star.

But do not forget, and do not give yourself a pass, that you never fucking showed up for the rest of us. You were passive and dismissive and justifying.

She is racist, ableist, queerphobic, and antisemitic. You have had a way to know this for twenty years. Even if you missed some of the early criticisms–I did, I was twelve years old and I fully recognize that many Potter readers aren’t even as old as the series itself, I don’t expect a five-year-old to have noticed this stuff–the evidence has piled up and piled up and piled up.

And only when it became a cause that’s politically convenient did outrage begin.

Speak out for the trans women who have been and will be harmed by Rowling’s recent drive off the cliff. Please do. I mean that genuinely. This is not okay.

But speak out for the rest of us too. Call her to task for EVERYTHING. Otherwise it’s empty performative posturing.

Your activism must be intersectional. Or it’s bullshit.

As an addendum, somebody in the notes pointed out Asia is actually bigger than Africa. I thought it had a smaller population but bigger landmass, but Google confirms it’s actually bigger on both fronts.

However, they also brought up this point, which I was not familiar with because I’d already noped out on the books and WOG content hardcore: nowhere in Asia is there mentioned any Wizarding school at all. Keep in mind there are 7.8 billion people on this planet, and India and China alone have over a billion each. In fact over 50% of the Earth’s population lives in Asia. (Keep in mind that means one continent has roughly the same number of people as THE OTHER SIX.) But there are no Wizarding schools there. Not one.

It gets worse and worse the longer you look.

um forgive me for this but isn’t japan in Asia, considered asian? Mahoutokoro  exists( the name is… not so great though…) and It’s a small school… um… o_0;  getting dissapointed with Rowling… every year.

A further correction to be noted here.

Durmstrang in Russia technically could count as an Asian school, but Russia is this weird country, geographically, that went “WE LAUGH AT YOUR CONTINENTAL PLATES” and is half in Europe and half in Asia, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Rowling has no idea it’s technically at least partly an Asian country.

Not only is her new book transphobic as hell, it’s also incredibly islamophobic, with the murderer dressing as a woman in a burka.

Also, putting the one magical school in all of Asia in Japan of all places is…..certainly a choice. Are we ignoring their history of imperialism in Korea and China or what?

Thanks for ignoring like 90% of the point of this post. I needed an example of someone who doesn’t give a shit about Black people or Jews or disabled people, and you very kindly provided.

I am a disabled Jew, just one who should have been clearer in my post. My point is that while I’m seeing a new resurgence in discussion of her transmisogyny, I’ve seen significantly less discussion of her islamophobia. It’s another case of people only showing up for specific groups and not showing true solidarity.

We knew this before. And we fight for all of us. ALL

We cannot responsibly divorce the author from the story, but we can make it damn clear who owns it.

If you don't understand why her rhetoric is so harmful, I recommend you start by watching this excellent video by trans YouTuber Jamie and his girlfriend Shaaba -- it directly addresses JKR's transphobic essay point by point.

To those who are rightfully livid: every time JKR spews hate about the trans community, let's share and/or donate to a trans organization.

A few options: Mermaids UK, The Okra Project, the Martha P. Johnson Institute, or one of the funds for Black trans women listed here.

This issue is far wider than a children's story, I know. And I know that a couple of paintings doesn't change much.

But: this is what I can do, so I'm doing it.
