Well, 2023 has been a messed up year for me as our beloved doggo girl Anke passed away on December 22nd as a result of some messed up legal dispute against some vermin I'm unfortunate enough to be related to. (Short version: We inherited Anke from my wealthy grand-uncle, who, knowing we were too poor to care for her financially, stated in his will that any and all costs should be covered from his fortune and also made several people promise just that before his passing, but my aunt and uncle wanted - and still want - that money for themselves and also torment and humiliate us ('cause they are just that pathetic and prefer to treat chronically ill people like shit to feel good about themselves instead of lifting a finger to become a better version of themselves), so they paid 40k to hire a lawyer to keep Anke's money away from her and our 'poor people' lawyer' wasn't at all motivated to help Anke, so she passed away as a result of the treatments she needed and couldn't receive in time)

But... yeah, compared to my younger, constantly suicidal self, I am handling things differently.

I'm still miserable and devastated about our loss, but I've ceased being the kind of woman who'd turn that misery inwards and against herself.

Instead, I'm just as livid and disgusted as I am sad, and I fully intend to keep the promise I made to our doggo girl to keep fighting my own health battle.

She may no longer be there to encourage me to push past my chronic pain, fatigue, and dissziness day after day, but I know that this is what she would've wanted me to keep doing.

I was actually able to achieve some recovery progress too: While, from early 2022 to summer 2023, the list of foods my body was able to tolerate kept shrinking and shrinking, I've become able to eat almost everythign again due to the hours upon hours I spent on restoring my lymphatic system to a healthier state. (Another long story short, in the end, I had so much lymphatic waste [yuck!!!] stuck in my abdomen that my hecking organs couldn't move - and thus not digest and also eat properly. I have a lot of....words about Germany's healthcare system and the humiliation I was - and still am - subjected to, but at the same time, I'm truly, truly grateful to all those wonderful doctors and natural heatlh professionals who are so consistently dedicated to their respective fields and also generous enough to share their precious research online for free. Without them and without my physical therapist, I still wouldn't be able to eat 90% of the foods I'm accustomed to eating and my body would've become so much more malnourished too.)

what did we do to deserve portal 2. that shit was so good and for what

we got to have this! we got to have a valve game set in the half life universe, and its an enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies-again sci fi comedy story about a homicidal ai created to run tests forever and the test subject she catches feelings for!! how is this game real!!!

happy birthday to the only video game ever

people still clown in the notes of this post so reminder that glados was gonna take you on a date and accuse you of cheating. shes not chells mom

In case anyone wants to know what we did to deserve Portal

Lead Writer Erik Wolfpaw joined Valve after leaving Double Fine. Before he got to work on anything he discovered he had a serious illness, and expected Valve to let him go since he couldn't work.

Instead, Gabe Newell told Wolfpaw "Your job here is to get better. Go home and get healthy," and kept Wolfpaw on payroll and insurance.

Wolfpaw repaid Valve by later writing Portal 1 and Portal 2.

"Here's a list of all the known personal blogs of staff members on tumblr to complain about the changes" okay cool so are you gonna release a list of Walmart employee emails next? The home addresses of Amazon employees? Like if you're seriously so disconnected from the realities of other workers that you think publicly harassing some employees for corporate decisions is totally fine, then bring that energy to everyone! Let's go spam the managers at our local Targets with graphic threats!

I hope every single person sharing the post this is about has never worked a single retail job where they've ever had to face an angry customer and recite a scripted speech about all the changes the company has made to improve the customer experience because otherwise, they are literally flushing worker solidarity straight down the toilet.

"Oh but this staff member is mocking people for being upset—" they are literally listing out things that the company has done. That is it. If it's in a cheerful and mildly patronizing way, then it's because it's fucking scripted becuee that is how ALL scripted corporate speech is.

Do you really want some office workers to openly talk about how much they hate their employers on the website they work on. Do you really want these programmers working for way less than you think to risk what is likely their only incomes to appease some assholes who are just gonna make a google doc accusing them of being literal fascists anyway. Like is that really something you think is a good idea.

Tentative hello from me to everyone still remembering me (you mean a great deal to me).

I know I’ve been lurking a lot and posting the occasional thing or two across my gazillion side-blogs, so I just feel the strong need to say:

I miss y’all, and I miss truly being here, having proper convos, rambling, RPing together, having a social life and whatnot.

The unfortunate thing is just, my health continues to be The Worst TM as in: I’ve been forced to supplement with a bottle of liquid diet a day for 6+ months now to prevent further weight losses, my blood pressure is permanently Low TM and in addition to that, I’m trapped in a beyond toxic environment because the people I have to depend on for at least a watered-down version of the treatment I need 110% WOULD cut their remaining support if I were to leave that place.

So, I don’t know when / if I can go back to exhibiting a more normal online behavior, but until then, please know that I’ll continue to fight for that glorious day.

[ID: A series of tags that read,

"#if anyone wasnt clear this was exactly the goal #refusing to talk about Harry Potter and making it irrelevant and making her BANKRUPT #I dont care how good of an artist you are. Im unfollowing you if you post harry potter #and blocking you for a hogwarts house in your bio #consider changing harry potter themed urls too #with your help. we can drop her profits completely"]

I wasn't going to comment on this post because nobody cares what I think, but fuck, somebody has two.

There's two issues being brought up here and they are being conflated at one.

The first is people giving JK Rowling money and her using it to supoort her transphobic ideals. That is its own topic and arguing against giving her money is good! Supoort your local libraries instead, pirate the movies, make your own merch or buy from small creators! Stop giving billionares more money, especially the ones who are using it to harm people. Instead, donate to a trans charity!

The second issue, and the one I have a problem with, is the blatant attempt at censorship.

You can like problematic content without condoning the problematic messages in it. It's okay; you don't need every piece of media you consume to be ~morally pure~. In fact, it's probably good for you to consume things that aren't.

It's okay; you can still like Harry Potter while knowing JK Rowling is a transphobic piece of shit and that there are a lot of racist undertones in her books. It doesn't make you a bad person for enjoying the content despite that.

You can like eldritch horror and HP Lovecraft while recognizing that he was extraordinarily racist, even for the time in which his works were written.

Oscar Wilde, a man who was sentenced to two years of hard labour for the crime of "gross indecency" (homosexuality) in 1895, said this in his Preface to The Picture of Dorian Grey:

"There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all."

Read the books you like. Read the problematic books, the banned books, the books people say are morally wrong. Read them, enjoy them, understand the pieces of them that are wrong and ask yourself why they are wrong.

The people arguing you shouldn't like problematic things or consume "immoral" media are the same type of people who silence artists, ban queer books, and protest outside libraries when drag queens read to children. They want censorship; they want to control what you think because they believe themselves to be morally superior.

There is no such thing as moral censorship.

Do not let people tell you what to think. Don't let them guilt you. You're not a bad person for enjoying problematic things; you're just a person. Go read Harry Potter. Go enjoy it, write fic for it, put your house in your description. It doesn't make you a bad person.

Do you ever just watch something, and then sit around with literal TEARS in your eyes (tears that don’t end up there easily at all), and you just struggle so much to process that pain that is very much cathartic in nature but at the same time it hurts so very much because ‘you’re still stuck there’ ? T_T

OUCH, my nonexistent heart *sobs*

I went ahead and signed up for the "ad-free browsing" Tumblr now offers and I'm happy to know others are too, and I want to say that I've seen a lot of people angry that Tumblr is trying to get people to "pay" to get rid of ads and like okay, yeah. Paying the amount gets rid of the ads, and Tumblr's intent here is to have you pay them money and they will not show you the ads that would be making them the money you're now paying them, because that's how ads on websites work, and have always worked. the money has to come from somewhere, and if it's not ads, it's users. or both.

but also like.

I've never had the ability to just give Tumblr money. It's never been an option available to me.

I can't really speak for anyone else, but I do often have some spare money, and I often use that money to donate to things that I like that have made my life more bearable. I set aside money each year for my monthly donations to AO3. I donate to wikipedia when they ask. I "buy gems" on flight rising at least once a year. Stuff like that. And even the last one, I do that once a year not because I want the gems (it's nice to get them) but because I use the site often and it improves my life and I want it to keep running. I donate to things I am able to use for free because they mean something to me. Because I want them to stay, and I understand that it's not their fault it takes money to run things.

I've never had that option here. I've never been able to donate directly to Tumblr to say "here's $20 to keep the lights on, thanks for giving me a place to call home." I've never been able to speak to Tumblr with my money.

And yes, it's a hellsite (affectionate and derogatory) and yes they do things that drive me up a wall sometimes, and they're not even close to perfect. They fuck up plenty.

But... it's ours. This space is mine, it's where my friends are, it's where I come to unwind, it is full of some of the most amazing folks I've had the pleasure of interacting with. It contains so much fandom history at this point. And it's not tracking us and it's not making us use real names and there's no viewing someone's follower count, no one gets merit for anything, posts blowing up is chaotic at best. There is no other site like that, not really, and certainly not one so easy to use that's already so full of people. Tumblr is one of the last bastions of wilderness on the internet, and I spend literal hours on here making stuff and talking to people and looking at stuff other people made.

And regardless of what Tumblr is or isn't, what they have done or not done or fucked up... Tumblr isn't just @staff. Tumblr, for me, is all of you, shitposting and meme posting and passionately science-ing and informing everyone about current events and showing off pictures of animals that make my day a little brighter. And without Tumblr as the platform to do all of this on, I would have to go someplace worse. Like Twitter. I don't want to go to Twitter.

So... in my eyes, I'm not paying $40 to get rid of ads. I mean, yeah okay that's happening as well, and it's a nice bonus, but it's not why I'm doing it, because I already get rid of ads for free.

But I AM giving Tumblr a $40 donation as a thank you for 10+ years of free service, the friends I have made along the way, the experiences I've earned here, the people I get to interact with, the sometimes functional website, the thousands of my posts they archive and host, and in the hopes it will stick around to continue to do all of that and more.

It doesn't have to be worth it to you, but it's worth it to me.

Hey, thanks for the feedback!

We’re exploring more ways of making Tumblr financially sustainable, so we can keep this weird ship afloat. You don’t have to buy into it if you don’t want, but like Matt, current interim Tumblr CEO, said in a recent post:

Remember that right now Tumblr costs a lot more to run than it makes, part of that bet is predicated on the idea that it’s losing money now but it’ll grow and make it up later. We just have to make it through this interim period by listening to users, iterating quickly, and shipping high-quality updates.

Love,

I would rather pay a much, much larger subscription fee than watch tumblr ground to dust trying courting advertisers whose goals are fundamentally opposed to user friendliness.

Everyone who bemoaned the advertiser-friendly porn ban or got exhausted by the introduction of autoplaying ads with sound on the mobile app ought to be celebrating.

This is the most exciting policy decision tumblr has made in a decade.

Not only does this show a genuine good faith effort to engage with users now.

It gives tumblr financial incentive in the future to listen to our needs instead of advertisers.

This is probably the most user friendly thing tumblr has ever done. It could be one of the most user friendly things possible.

This is amazing, and we need to be lining the fuck up to support it.

You know that phrase, "if you're not the customer, you're the product"?

This is tumblr's staff giving us the option to step up, stop being the product, and start being the customer.

And if you can't afford it, it's fine!

Reblog the positive and enthusiastic posts about it, get the word out.

We literally asked for exactly this.

Me: *Has been on her RP blogs exclusively because her physical health has been a giant mess and it’s taken quite a while for useful leads to start appearing*

Also me: “Okay, so... Can I just say: Nagini/Bellatrix and Tom/Nagini/Bellatrix ftw??”

(The more I think about them, the more these two ultrararepairs grow on me O.O)
