Just finished Chapter 33 in Sense and Sensibility. John Dashwood has hella audacity bc he tells Elinor about his concerns for her and their sisters’ ability to marry well but emphasizes their lack of fortune as if that isn’t literally HIS fault. He was out here building greenhouses and buying an extra home instead fulfilling his father’s death wish to help his sisters and his stepmom to the best of his ability🙄

I just finished reading Covering Islam: How the Media and the Experts Determine How We See the Rest of the World by Edward Said. I feel like the world really hasn’t changed much from 30-40 years ago. This is the second sociological(?)/scholarly book I read written in the 80s or 90s that describes how people act. Like nothing’s changed. Anyway, I think it’s important to read during the time we find ourselves in now to prevent us from spewing more Islamophobia. Plus, Said’s language is easy to get through.

I just finished reading House of Gold by Natasha Solomons, and whewww it is an emotional rollercoaster.

I love historical fiction, so I had to get this when I saw it was on sale at an independent bookstore. It’s a fictionalization of the Rothschild family in the years leading up to/during World War 1 and focuses mainly on a female protagonist who moves to England for her arranged marriage. The Rothschilds are a prominent Jewish banking family that became successful in the 1800s in Europe with different branches of the family in different countries. The novel explores how war ruins the strength of the multinational family.

It’s chef’s kiss.

As someone who graduated w/ a humanities degree I want to let fellow humanities people know that

  1. you’re not a failure for not having your dream job straight out of college/university
  2. if it takes a long ass time for you to get that job, it’s normal
  3. some of these people will say very unhelpful, un-uplifting things and you gotta ignore them

I don’t want to get too vulnerable, but I don’t have any comments about the light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope we all get through there.

Jamaica Kincaid is once again that girl. I read excerpts of A Small Place my 3rd year of uni and decided to read The Autobiography of My Mother. I just finished the latter and boy do I have thoughts.

  • It’s sad but surprisingly didn’t make me sob the whole time.
  • The main character is so interesting to me like just a (self-proclaimed) loveless creature living on the island of Dominica. She has it rough, too, because her dad was not doing his job and her mom was dead since her birth😭
  • Kincaid is so skilled at navigating these sad, complex topics with very simple language. It’s a good good read

hi! i just wanted to add that mademoiselle and madame = miss in different contexts.

  • mademoiselle = miss; when a young woman is not married
  • madame = miss; when a woman is older and single (or mrs.; when a woman is married)

idk which one you defer to when you speak about a woman w/ an unknown marital status (e.g.: ms. in English) but i hope my explanation helped!

Happy new year! Bonne année!

I started reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I got it as a gift a few months ago and thought it would be nice to start the new year learning more about NE indigenous folks. It’s very good imo. Read it if you can :)

Blog update: I graduated from uni last month, so I won’t have a lot of study/bujo content. I won’t use this account a lot as usual but I’d probably post language stuff. I need to maintain my French 😅

rediscovering my love of french and wanting to pick it up again, i used to hate it in school but now i realise how the structure of school and exams just ironically kills of the feeling of wanting to learn. please interact and tell me your fav methods of learning languages? or just your experiences with learning french in general?

(my langblr is so dead but) one way I maintain my French is consuming French-language media. I have a Spotify playlist of French songs I like, I recently started listening to Coffee Break French (podcast), and I watch French-language movies!
