The Sound of Silence

After lifetime of being deaf, my best friend just received cochlear implants.  When he woke up from the surgery, we all stood around him.  His wife was the first one to say anything. He heard her voice and at once began to cry.  We all took turns speaking, letting him hear our voices and our names, and with each word we said, he became more emotional.  When we were all finished, silence hung in the room.

He looked up at me and asked what that sound was.  It took me a moment to understand what he was hearing, and when I understood, I told him he was hearing silence.

He shook his head.  “This isn’t silence,” he said slowly, hearing his own voice for the first time.  “I’ve been hearing silence all my life, and this is different.”

A sound came from just outside the hospital room, and he perked up immediately.  “Isn’t that silence?”

We all exchanged looks of trepidation around the room before I spoke.  “No,” I said slowly.  “That was the sound of someone screaming.”

Hysterical ... As if he woke up, able to hear everything after surgery.. 👍

Comments are just as bad ... "How can he speak if he's been deaf all his life.."... Wow.. Just.... Wow. 🙄

Please reblog if you are 20+ and are mentally ill. I see so many posts by mentally ill teenagers and that’s great, but I feel like I’m too old to have depression and anxiety and other mental issues to the extent that I do.

Mental illness has no age

Hi! I'm Lizzie, a student at London SouthBank University! I'm currently writing my dissertation (ahh HELP) and have made a survey I'd be really grateful if you could take part in! It's anonymous and I'm just collecting info about film/TV and the Deaf community and how they come together! If you'd be willing to answer about 11 questions let me know and I'll send you a link! Thank you everyso much :D

I am so mad right now.

For those of you that don’t know, I am deaf and I have a cochlear implant… I have a headpiece a processor and wire that I take care of really well. Its just sometimes there are accidents and old age that comes in and makes me mad…

Anyways, If I can’t get it fixed its going to cost me upward of 800$ to replace… And its not likely that I’ll be able to get it fixed soon. So I am going to have to deal with sound cutting in and out if I want to listen to anything. That shit is expensive, and if there is nothing wrong with the headpiece, the wire that I just had replaced will have to be replaced again which is another 160$ down the drain.

I am just so annoyed and frustrated.

This is really bad. I am extremely lucky that I can just go into the Cochlear Implant centre and they would fix it. I hope it get sorted out for you! :( X

I've been learning ASL for over a year now, and I got down the abc's and I have some signs down too. But I don't know if it's good or not because I don't know anyone personally who's deaf. So what do I do? Do I look up videos to compare my signing or do I seek out someone to befriend and have them tell me?

Hi,

in my opinion, the best way to learn ASL (or any sign language, really) is to attend sign language courses taught by Deaf teacher. If you live in a big city and can spare the expense, I am sure you will be able to find some.

If you are only a beginner, I doubt that you will be able to evaluate just how good or bad are you at signing. Someone else should do that. If courses are not an option for you, tried to reach some native signer and ask them to help you. I can’t recommend anyone specific, maybe our followers want to help?

Hope that helped,

Mod T

Alright my lovely beauties, got a big request for you here! A friend has come forward and asked me to ask you all for some first-hand experience as her lecturers love this sort of stuff.

First question: Were you born d/Deaf? Second question: What language development differences you do believe there are between a d/Deafie and a hearing? She is after as many responses she can get, particularly those with hearing aids and cochlear implants!

Any help is appreciated. So glad she came forward to me for support! X

First question: yes I was born deaf but received cochlear implant in April 2007. Second question: it takes longer for a deaf person to develop language, whether it's Sign language or oral.

Share guys. :)
