Thinking about how Zuko and Katara, when they go after Yon Rha, wear black covering their nation’s clothes not only for the practical purpose of hiding their identities, but it also shows that they are united beyond their nation’s boundaries, two characters who had been formerly divided by said boundaries and polar opposites, red and blue, fire and water.

Thinking about how black symbolizes grief and mourning, how it symbolizes night and dark emotions.

How most of the journey takes place at night and climaxes in the rain, because this is Katara’s journey, her element, her darkness.

But Zuko is also associated with black. He wears black as the Blue Spirit, and is associated with nighttime and the dark of the moon eclipsing the sun. The moon, night, and black are guiding forces in his narrative.

There’s a saying that character is what you are in the dark. There’s also the idiom “all cats are gray in the dark,” meaning in the dark, the color fades away and people all appear the same.
