our power went out

I want you all to know, Texas isn't built for this bullshit. Our infrastructure wasn't planned for subfreezing temperatures. Our houses are built to keep the heat OUT, not INSIDE. It's 3° F here in North Dallas, definitely in the negatives with the windchill.

I'm in an especially rough spot, because one of our exterior walls is fucking rotting from the inside, making our heat escape even faster. Our kitchen sink FROZE last night and we had to take a hairdryer to it to dethaw. I'm having to build nests out of extra blankets and pillows so my cats don't freeze tonight.

There are thousands of Texans right now in the same spot. I implore y'all to stop with the jokes about us not knowing how to deal with these temperatures. And I don't wanna hear shit about how we're a red state so we deserve it. Texas is a huge culprit when it comes to voter suppression. All of the major cities where the power outages are happening are blue.

Have some compassion.

This is what happens when people want to deny climate change. Places where it shouldn't snow are freezing while places where it shouldn't melt are melting.

I can't feel my fingers right now. We need any help we can get. Here's a wishlist I've set up of things we could use right now if anyone can help. Even reblogging does wonders. ERCOT is saying the power could be out for an entire month.

The Court Jester starring Danny Kaye, Basil Rathbone, and the amazing Glynis Johns, and Angela Lansbury and it is all around a fun time.

All kidding aside, watch Basil Rathbone’s foot work. He knows fencing, and sets up the form even though he’s still playing up the stage blows for Danny Kaye to flail at for comedic effect.

Okay, but I need to talk about this because it’s even funnier if you know the context... Basil Rathbone was one of the greatest swordsmen in Hollywood history.  Which is why he almost never won any of his onscreen fights–he was good enough that he knew how to effectively make the other guy look even better.  That’s why the swordfight in The Adventures of Robin Hood looks so awesome even though Errol Flynn is nowhere near Rathbone’s level.

But this fight, right here?  Was one of the only fights where he needed a stunt double.  Because while he was able to keep Danny Kaye from being seriously injured, Rathbone himself nearly got skewered a few times by Kaye’s flailing around.  So in a bizarre way, this is probably the closest to an even match Rathbone had in his career… just not for the reasons you’d expect.

ive been reading a book that basically explains how so-called “brain differences” between the genders is the result of gendered socialization and not the cause of it. i honestly expected the book to be very cis-centric but its actually the opposite, the author stresses that testimony from trans ppl is actually indispensable because we’ve, in a sense, “lived both experiences”

more cis feminists should have this mindset

one of the first examples that she uses to introduce her point about how perception by others can shape a person’s performance actually uses a trans woman. it explains that as a certain trans woman became to be seen as a woman more and more frequently, the ppl arond her eventually started viewing her as being ill equipped for tasks that they did not bother her about pre-transition. eventually she even found herself underperforming in these tasks herself.

She’s written a new one! It won the Royal Society prize for science book of the year, and it’s called Testosterone Rex, and it is excellent.

(Bonus: it’s making old white men really really mad.)

(Bonus bonus: I am myself a neuroscientist, and the old white men mentioned above – who are not – could not have missed the point harder if they’d actively tried. Which. Maybe?)
