motivational classics quotes

Hi guys! Here’s a masterpost of some inspirational quotes taken from classical literature that you can use in your bullet journal, planner, or whenever you need some extra motivation! Italicized are some of my favorites that really help me stop procrastinating and get through the day :)

romans:

seneca:

  • “i will storm the gods, and shake the universe.”
  • “luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
  • “if one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable.”
  • “it is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, but because we do not dare, things are difficult.”
  • “sometimes it is an act of bravery even to live.”

ovid:

  • “nothing is stronger than habit.”
  • “let your hook be always cast. in the pool where you least expect it, will be fish.”
  • “endure and persist; this pain will turn into good by and by.”
  • “what is without periods of rest will not endure.”

virgil:

  • “they can because they think they can.”
  • “let us go singing as far as we go: the road will be less tedious.”
  • “work conquers all.”
  • “practice and thought may forge many an art.”
  • “we cannot all do everything.”

horace:

  • “adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.”
  • “he who has begun has half done. dare to be wise; begin!”
  • “remember when life’s path is steep to keep your mind even.”
  • “mix a little foolishness with your serious plans. it is lovely to be silly at the right moment.”
  • “he who feared that he would not succeed sat still.”

catullus:

  • “often has leisure ruined great kings and fine cities.”
  • “if anything has happened to one who ever yearned and wished but never hoped, that is a rare pleasure of the soul.”
  • “i hate and i love. perhaps you ask why i do this? i do not know, but i feel it happening and i am tortured.”

greeks:

homer:

  • “the fates have given mortals hearts that can endure.”
  • “some of the words you’ll find within yourself, the rest some power will inspire you to say.”
  • “for a friend with an understanding heart is worth no less than a brother.”
  • “there is a time for many words and there is a time also for sleep.”

sappho:

  • “may I write words more naked than flesh, stronger than bone, more resilient than sinew, sensitive than nerve.”
  • “beauty endures only for as long as it can be seen; goodness, beautiful today, will remain so tomorrow.”
  • “you who judge me, for me you are nothing.”

plato:

  • “be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
  • “no one should be discouraged who can make constant progress, even though it be slow.”
  • “music is a moral law. it gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”
  • “the first and best victory is to conquer self.”
  • “the beginning is the most important part of the work.”

aristotle:

  • “the roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.”
  • “pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.”
  • “poetry demands a man with a special gift for it, or else one with a touch of madness in him.”
  • “we are what we repeatedly do. excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” (misattributed, but too good to pass up :) )

plutarch:

  • “the mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled.”
  • “what we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.”
  • “to make no mistakes is not in the power of man; but from their errors and mistakes the wise and good learn wisdom for the future.”
  • “painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.”

note to self

•add a sprinkle of cinnamon to your coffee. it will change your life.

•always be kind to your waiter/waitress & the person behind the cash register. treat them with respect.

•take pictures of the things that make you happy, not for instagram, but for yourself.

•stop sleeping with your makeup on. you deserve better than that.

•don’t let yourself be consumed by the idea of perfection

•don’t let social media cause you stress. no one is paying more attention to your posts than you

•let people know when you’re missing them

•don’t be afraid to cut or dye your hair. life changes and things move on. just go for it.

•listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks while you clean. you can find many for free on youtube.

•don’t let anyone make fun of you for taking photos of your coffee or the sunset

•change your sheets more often

•use coconut oil as an eye makeup remover, it’s seriously a game changer

•make playlists for different moods, different people and for yourself

•remind yourself that you don’t have to be travelling & having adventures to give your life meaning

•ask yourself why you’re posting something. if it’s for anyone other than you, forget it.

Words to replace said, except this actually helps

I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

be kind to historians. they do a thankless job, digging through layers and layers of artifacts, letters, and dates, only to be told that their work is not as important as others’. their paper-cut hands don’t seem impressive to most, the sign of the leisurely scholar. but they carry the burden of mankind’s memory- shepherds of souls, they rescue the lost from lethe’s devouring streams. the doctor may scoff, the engineer laugh, the physicist sneer. yet no one has found immortality’s secret except the historians, who delve into textbooks and bring people back to life.

be kind to historians. they are a sensitive, though not fragile, sort. they have wept for those whom they can never meet, for those who have been dust for centuries before our time. in some ways these lives are meaningless to them, vague shadows of people who once walked upon the earth, perhaps something like the people we know them as, perhaps not. time snatches some details away, corrupts others. but the historians collect them all and say, you were a person once. let us get know you as best as we can.

be kind to historians. they are, as schlegel once wrote, like prophets in reverse. they cannot predict the future, not exactly; their knowledge is of the past. but unlike normal prophets, historians can explain their myriad visions. old happenings become not whats and whens but whys, and the historians tell us their tales of the past with an eye toward the future. they cannot exactly say what will happen, but they warn us of what might, looking where nobody else will to keep us as safe as they can.

yes, be kind to historians. because they are kind to us.

Mornings suck but

Grab a coffee, eat some nice food, take a warm, comfortable shower and listen to music. Make a list of things due today, make a list of non academic things to do today, complete these tasks. Make a list of things you will (most likely) have to do in the afternoon. Pick the ‘evening reading’ book in the morning. Brush your teeth. Remember to fill up your water bottle. Remember to bring your phone, wallet, keys and earphones. Remember to bring a sweater and tissues. Keep deodorant in your bag. Remember to put deodorant on in the morning. Check that your laptop is fully charged. If it’s not, put your charger in your bag. Bring a phone charger. These are the small reminders to keep you organised in the morning.
