All about a crazy dog named Bellatrix.

Moriarty's 3rd birthday is August 11th! Bellatrix' 15th birthday is August 12th! Bella's birthday is such a great one, I'll have to make it extra great!

So far Mori's holding strong as top slowest English Cocker Spaniel of 2023 🤣 He's still learning the game and getting faster each run. So far 12.78 is his best time.

Fit check? Ment to order the Zero DC Short but got confused. Debating if I should return it for the one I ment to get. On one hand it might be a bit too "Much" as I was hoping to use it as his regular harness as well. On the other hand it took 6ish weeks to get here so me being impatient I don't want to wait for the other one to get here haha. Anyway, how does the fit look on this one? (Tagging a few folks I thought might have input)

Question for those who do Canicross/Bikejoring...

Are there any weight ratio rules or suggestions in the sport? I've been searching and can't find anything.

Thanks!

There are no hard and fast weight ratios for canicross or bike, it all depends on the dog and their willingness to pull.

The only weight consideration I’d give any real thought is being ‘over dogged’ for canicross. A large, strong dog (or sometimes even two medium dogs) and smaller or steadier runner can have a real impact on knees and lower back, even with the right equipment and running on a good surface.

Bikejor will require a bit more pedalling for a wee dog as you won’t get as much assistance, but nothing to stop them from going for it.

There is no lower limit though— back when I was still coaching and racing we would get all kinds of small but mighty racers in canicross and bikejor. 💪

Thank you everyone! @some-sort-of-ecologist @konmari-dogs @initial-dino Excited to buy his harness soon and start training!

Etsy has banned the sale of Service Dog items.

The people this WON'T hurt are those who fake Service Dogs. They will simply go to the next site that will sell them what they want.

The people this WILL hurt, however, are great in number. First of all, this will be tough for all the people who were making and selling these items. Many of whom have legitimate Service Animals and/or are disabled.

It will also make it tougher for Service Dog handlers to get the gear they want or need. Some people have said they should just get their gear from the program their dog came from. One problem with this is that people who owner train their Service Dog do not have a program.

Also, where should programs get this stuff? Many have items custom made by, you guessed it, Etsy sellers. In addition, should programs have to provide every Service Dog item a handler could ever want? Vests, patches of all kinds with different sayings (Service Dog in Training, Service Dog, Service Dog Do Not Pet, Mobility Service Dog, etc) Decals for cars or home doors that announce to keep Service Dog with handler incase of emergency, leash wraps, collars, collar tags, hotel door hangers, information cards, etc. This is unreasonable, so handlers would be limited to the items provided to them.

Fake Service Dogs are a real problem, but is this truly going to help? People who are determined to fake a Service Dog will do so whether they can buy a vest and patches or not. This decision by Etsy won't hurt them, it will only hurt those with legitimate disabilities and Service Animals.

If anyone is interested in helping to make a list of shops that sell SD gear places off of Etsy please let me know. That way handlers can still find the gear they want and we can support our favorite makers.

Bella's not doing so well after a trip to the emergency vet. I'll take whatever thoughts, prayers, etc you have

Trying to get Mori bikejoring equipment for Christmas, but I'm not sure I can afford a $60 antenna. Anyone had success with making their own? I've seen people using pool noodles, does that seem just as safe?

Fun games (Individual or group) for Service Dog training? Could use more ideas if anyone has any. Thanks in advance! (Feel free to tag folks who might have ideas)

Ok, I made a Dogblr Masterlist Google doc

Thanks for putting in the effort, @nefja!

I hope that we all take this in the spirit it is meant – to connect people that want to share their dogs and talk about dogs.

I know that lists can feel like a popularity contest and some people feel bitter about inclusion or lack of inclusion presently or in the past, but look how long the list is and realise that it’s a work in progress and you can always be added if you want (or removed if that’s what you want).

And also note that not everyone is following everyone else – and not everyone has to! The only way to use the internet is to curate. I don’t expect everyone to vibe with my content (I am a particular flavour) and similarly I don’t vibe with plenty of others. And that’s OK!

So let’s use this opportunity to find connections with the folks we click with and continue to post the content we enjoy sharing. And if we make an effort to engage with the content we like, then we’ve improved our community.

With dogs, we seek to understand where they are coming from and meet them where they are at, with kindness and joy. Let’s do the same for each other.

Hey everyone! Happy to be a part of the dogblr community. To introduce myself and my dogs to new people...

My name is Sara, I'm 25y and have two dogs, Bellatrix a Pug/Shih tzu mix Service Dog, and Moriarty an English Cocker Spaniel Service Dog in Training. We also do agility, parkour, acting, and rally o.

I've been helping to train Service dogs with an organization for about 8ish years now. I'm fascinated by all things training, behavior, etc.

Happy to take asks or requests for content. I love learning so if you find an informative post please feel free to tag me.

I don’t think we give tiny dogs enough credit for being brave and tiny, cause today I dropped a bucket and it nearly landed on top of woody. It is nearly the same size as her and was quite heavy. Despite this, and despite the noise of a metal bucket hitting the ground from a height, her only reaction was to look at all the goat feed sprayed across the ground and go ‘oh hell yeah!’

Priorities. I guess.

I know dogs have become accustomed to our house when they can handle random objects dropped around them with equanimity.

Currently both our Spaniels do jump up when something gets dropped, but fortunately they run toward sound to hand it back to me, which is so nice. I love to see the confidence.

This is definitely something I've learned in training my own Service Dog and helping to train others. There are lots of things in the world that could be potentially scary for a dog, but especially a small dog. Things falling, big shopping carts being pushed near them, elevators, umbrellas, trains, cars, automatic doors, people running, dogs barking, etc. It's amazing sometimes how brave little dogs can be!
