"Of finding, and losing, and finding again."

Another remake of a piece I made back in 2017 (here's the link to the original:)

I really like making these re-draw, because I can 1) revisit lots of beloved concepts and ideas and 2) see how I improved since drawing something for the first time.

Starlight.

"You know... It does suit you."

"What?"

"The hair. It looks like starlight."

I kinda reject everything that happened in the last season... Everything but the hair. Ok, technically, this happened before the last season, but still. Shiro with white hair is life ❤️

I want a Voltron fanfic that uses the ideas of the “humans are space orcs” thing. Like why were humans of all creatures mystically chosen by the universe to be the paladins this time around when last time a different species entirely were assigned to each lion? Oh, I’ll tell you why. Humans are pursuit predators-they have perfected the kind of stamina required to hunt down a 10,000 yr old empire. As a species they managed to stick around long enough to evolve sentience not because of any particular advantage they hold over the rest of the beings on earth but bc of their sheer ability to survive. Good luck killing these guys, Zarkon. Humans are naturally primed to pack bond which is why these paladins are able to form Voltron immediately and it’s part of what makes them so dangerous. Earth is a planet of many cultures, unlike most of the planets seen in the show which for simplicity’s sake seem to have one planet wide culture. This exposure to so many different cultures makes them exceptionally good at forming alliances-perfect skill when leading a war effort. They are inventive, able to digest most anything, able to live through broken bones, and come from a hell planet. Evolution basically made the perfect kind of creatures to pilot the lions. The Alteans are also from a hell world but they developed things like shape shifting and super strength and quintessence sensitivity to beat it-humans didn’t do that. They did something else and it’s far more terrifying.

I have this vague headcanon that humans have super dense quintessence but just….don’t use it. Somehow the conditions of Earth means there’s a lot of quintessence floating around (maybe why Blue hid there) but it’s in a condition so that humans, and most earth creatures, evolved to just exist in it. Like nitrogen or something. Which means humans have a whole lot of quintessence that sorta just sits in their bodies like water and they never even notice because why would they?

One reason that the Lions sat inactive for so long is that for most species, these massive other worldly energy sinks that run on quintessence would sap them dry. There’s whole swaths a species that can’t possibly be paladins because the attempt would kill them before they even got off the ground.

Species like Alteans and Galra have either evolved or engineered their way into having enough quintessence to handle the Lion bonds or have a quick/efficient way or recharging or refueling their quintessence. Alteans like Allura can manipulate and absorb/re-emit huge amounts of quintessence. The Galra empire appears to basically run on quintessence. The ability to process and manipulate quintessence has normally been a prerequisite to prominence on the grand scale.

And then you have humans. That have these MASSIVE reserves of super dense quintessence that they do NOTHING with. Like Earth is such a hell planet that oh, whoops, guess we evolved to hoard this massive energy source like a billionaire hoards dollars? And sure, on Earth, that means nothing because everyone has it. Humans haven’t even discovered it because it’s such a non-thing. But throw them into the greater universe?

Hoo boy. Like, statistically, this random, pre-contact species should have almost no chance of being able to fly with the Lions. But no. Five, untrained, very young humans showed up and bonded with the Lions IMMEDIATELY and didn’t even break a sweat. This despite not even knowing what quintessence is beyond like “idk, maybe like an internet personality test??”

Allura herself is already a statistical outlier power house so maybe she doesn’t really realize it, but to anyone else who actually understood the Lions… this shouldn’t even be possible.

(Zarkon originally dismisses and mocks them of having “no idea the true power of the Lions” because it’s like a toddler pretending to drive a car. Haha cute kiddo, keep pulling on the wheel, you’ll get there someday.

Except somehow these toddlers ARE driving and pulling off expert level stunts, and what the fuck, how are they WINNING?!)

The paladins (humans) don’t even notice there’s a drain. “Wow, that was a tough one,” they say and go make a snack. Or get into five arguments and one impromptu game of full contact spoons before the hour is up, it’s all the same (apparently????). They just have THAT much inactive quintessence.

It’s the same thing the powers Shiro’s arm. It’s just his personal quintessence. Notice how we see Senak charging his arm in his first appearance, but Shiro never does? Hagar discovered his extra dense quintessence and got very interested. This kind of constant drain on someone’s life force should kill them in, like, a week tops.

Shiro just thinks he doesn’t get enough sleep because of PTSD/nightmares.

(To be fair, he’s right.)

Also, do you know how much the Lions LOVE having paladins who aren’t always drained or exhausted after bonding with them? Who will stay in the bond seemingly forever? Not to mention, the deeper the bond the more equal the quintessence exchange becomes. Oh, and these paladins have no problem materializing Voltron or any of their weapons for indefinite lengths of time. Sure, they struggled to figure out how to do it at first, but again, zero training, toddlers in a motor vehicle. It’s not raw power that’s holding them back.

No one living (besides Zarkon and a few select others) even saw the original Voltron, let alone knew its true capacity. The legends just say “Most Powerful Weapon in the Universe”. So no one has a point of reference for what makes these paladins unique. But if they did, they would be afraid. They should be very, very afraid.

Congratulations, the new paladins have turned Voltron, which was originally a one-punch style weapon, into a persistence predator.

Have fun with that.

here are pages and panels from a fancomic i was working on and off on since january! and never finished for very obvious reasons (i shouldnt have spent so much time on clean lineart in later pages lol)

anyway the comic is about the black lion opening up to a younger allura and her going on a midnight joyride. season 3 then kind of debunked that being possible tho since the black lion had no reaction to her :) and im still bitter about that :)

idk i still might finish it? it’s only missing a few pages but….. eeeeh idk. maybe someday. looking at these altogether tho im proud of how much i got done

EDIT: open these in a new tab so you can look at em better tumblr Sucks haha

and here’s bonus concept art: space! wow!
