On the Bear Community:

Honestly, as more and more of us younger people are getting into the community, we should take this as a chance to change the community into a force for good within the LGBTQ+ (especially and more specifically the mlm) community at large. The bear community was started out as a place for those who weren’t accepted in mainstream gay culture because of what they looked like and how they acted. We have to make a shift back to this ideology and make a space for people who have been rejected by mainstream gay culture. A space for the fats, the fems, and especially the non-white people of those two categories.

To do this we must:

On bear culture

The bear culture cannot simply promote masculine, muscly/husky, white, scruffy men. It must even go further than saying body hair and largeness are sexy too. To me, the gay male bear culture has to be about body acceptance of all marginalized bodies.

It has to promote Black bodies, Latino bodies, Asian bodies, Indigenous, and Mixed bodies. It has to promote hairy and unhairy bodies. It has to promote trans and non-binary bodies. It has to promote the bodies of feminine men of all sizes. It has to promote fat bodies, not just muscle. It has to promote disabled bodies. It has to promote bodies with HIV/AIDS. It has to promote sexiness of the human body in ways that the mainstream gay media does not. It has to promote that all bodies are beautiful and sexy and valuable.

I cannot tolerate a bear culture that is racist, misogynistic, ableist, and transphobic. Bear culture taught me body confidence, so I hurt when I know some people do not like gay culture. But if it is because bear culture is problematic, then it needs to be dealt with. I identify as a bear and I think bear culture needs to step up.

Wearing a chest binder can be an important part of a person’s daily life and expression, but it can be hard to find binders in diverse colors, sizes or styles.

This month, the LGBTQ-run company gc2b challenged that trend by releasing a line of chest binders called “All Nude.” The binders come in five different skin-tone shades, ranging from light beige to dark brown. They also come in two styles – a crop top length and a tank top length – and in sizes XXS to 5XL.

“At gc2b we aim to continue to accommodate and celebrate the vast spectrum of humanity, to always serve and liberate our phenomenal supporters, and as always, to design with the true you in mind,” gc2b, who Mic has reached out to for comment, writes on its website.
Although some designers on Etsy have attempted to create their own more inclusive lines with more shades of nude, such as LeoLines, this is the first time an established and trusted brand has expanded its range.
Underworks, a binder company that has been around since 1997, still only stocks binders in the current usual array of colors. FLAVNT Streetwear has a line of binding swim tops in five different shades in the works as well, but those haven’t yet hit the market.
It matters that a binder company is already trusted for the simple reason that chest binding can be quite dangerous. “I essentially liken binding to drinking a can of Coke,” Jessie Anderson, who is transgender, said in a previous interview. “Is it good for you? No, but you’re going to do it anyway.”

This. Is. So. Important. Get yours here
