3.14.18- Retaining information:

1) Listen and pay attention in class. Ask questions to clarify anything you don't understand. Make sure you are alert.

2) Follow along in your textbook if you can so that you're able to hear and read the words at the same time. Use as many senses as you can (auditory, visual...)

3) Write down the info. Even if you don't usually read through your notes again, it'll help you memorize information better if you have it written.

4) Read through your notes at least once after the class ends. Try summarizing the lesson in your head, or reteaching yourself a concept. Revisit your notes often and frequently to best retain the info.

3.6.18- Reading and Understanding Academic Text

1- Research about the author and their beliefs before you start reading. This will help you understand what they believe and get their point across more effectively. If you are given any descriptions at the beginning, make sure you read them first before continuing.

2- Read through the entirety of the text at least once. You'll understand a work best if you read it more than once, repeating paragraphs or sentences that are confusing.

3- Go back and annotate each paragraph with your own understanding of the text. (Or annotate from the start, and then go back and scan it again for anything you missed).

4- Look up unfamiliar words and recite sentences that have tricky structure aloud.

5- Keep in mind the author's purpose, their tone, and any rhetorical/literary devices as you read. Ask yourself what the author believes, and write it down in the margins to make it easier later on. Keep in mind what your prompt is (if you're given one) and formulate an answer as you go along.

6- If you're allowed, look up a summary or brief description of the work online. Be careful doing this, however, and do it only after you've put in your own effort and are just looking for different understandings/viewpoints. You'll never learn if you let other people do the work for you.

how to study for physics

(Requested by ultraranimtumb)

2.20.18- How to study for a physics test (very similar to how I study for math)

1) Read through the chapter, closely and carefully. Don't skim or skip ahead. It's important you understand all the information that you need, something you can't do if you're skipping over half the words. For more difficult concepts, you may need to read the same pages many times. Remain patient and give youreself enough time so that you can retain the info before the test. Read through your notes as well, and work towards keeping your notes neat and orderly.

2) Make sure you understand all diagrams and examples. Ask for an explanation from a teacher or your peers if you're confused. You'll never learn if you don't ask. It's best to do this when the concept if first taught so that you'll retain the information longer. If you ask right before the test, chances are that you'll probably forget.

3) Be active when solving problems. Try your best, and think about why you're following the steps you did. Understand each step before moving on and ask if you get stuck. Don't just sit there while someone else does the work for you. In the words of my beloved physics textbook, "Did you read the answer before trying the problem for yourself? If so, do you also exercise your body by watching others do push-ups?" Exercise your brain and train it to complete the problems until it becomes habitual.

4) Your textbook will be your best friend when studying. A lot of books have practice problems with the answer key. Attempt each problem, repeating as many times as it takes until you get it correct. Try to puzzle out what you did wrong so you can avoid the same mistake next time. A lot of books have explanations, so if you're textbook has them, read them carefully.

5) Memorizing formulas is important, but it is even more important to understand the actual concepts behind them. Try your best to comprehensively know the material instead of just memorizing. (Memorizing is also short term memory, while understanding concepts will get stored in long term) Ask friends to explain the concepts to you, while you share your understanding as well. It also helps to stand in front of the mirror and act like you're giving a physics lesson to an imaginary class. It'll make you look crazy, but at least you'll pass.

6) Watch videos. The reason I recommend this step towards the end is because a lot of videos are very fast paced and hard to understand if you're new to the concept. But rewatching them after you've understood the lesson will help solidly your thoughts. (This is especially true for crash course)

7) Less a tip for studying and more for actually taking the test: The moment you get your test, write down all the formulas you memorized so you don't forget later on.

8) I know it's hard, but don't stress out. Often times, your brain will be too stressed thinking about how stressed you are to do any studying. Try to study a few days earlier, so that when the test date gets closer, you can spend an hour or two before bed relaxing in the bath or watching your favorite shows. Your future self will thank you, trust me.

I hope this helps, and good luck to anyone taking exams or tests!

how to study for math tests

2.9.18- How to study for a math test: (or how I study at least)

1) Read through the chapters at least once from your textbook before you start reviewing. You might not have understood much when it was first taught because the concept was new, but now that the murky fog of confusion has been lifted, you'll be sure to understand more the second time around.

2) Review theorems, rules, and formulas. Make sure you solidify your understanding of the concepts before you start implementing it in problems.

3) If you still have no idea what's going on, try asking a friend to explain it to you or watch videos. Try to solve it on your own instead of just staring at a screen while someone else does the problem for you.

4) Redo old worksheets or questions from class so that you can get good practice. If you have corrected quizzes or homework, use those to study since you'll already have the correct answers.

5) If you have chapter reviews and practice tests in your textbook, use those to quiz yourself on how well you know the subject.

6) Ace the test  👍🏽👍🏽 You got this

2.7.18- Studying for an Arabic test that kept getting postponed. 🤔 I found that each time I studied, I knew the vocab better and retained them better too.

Memorizing the vocab words the night before can help you pass the test, but you'll almost always forget right after. Instead, try practicing a little every day, reviewing the ones you have trouble with frequently. You'll remember it not only for the test, but afterwards as well.
