It’s kinda mind blowing how badly grad school exacerbated my mental illnesses.

Like, it’s not as if life is suddenly all kittens and rainbows just because I graduated, but I’m finding it so much easier to manage. I’m currently just as busy (maybe even more so) than I was in grad school, but I’m actually getting enjoyment out of each day? I’m actually able to relax a bit each day without feeling constantly guilty? My mind actually doesn’t have to be constantly torn and constantly grinding on grad school problems in the background? I don’t actually wake up in the middle of the night with panic attacks anymore? Grad school was messing me up but now it’s over!!

scientists be making cell signaling diagrams and calling it “___ signaling at a glance!” but apparently don’t understand the definition of “glance” because it’ll still be like the most complicated schematic you’ve ever seen in your life

For thoughs who do not know what a signaling pathway is

Its hell

all those myths and legends you hear about uni professors being patient and understanding regarding human plight are true.

i was literally just feeling bad today and she totally gets it.

I once had a one-day hospital stay and confessed to my professor that I felt like I’d lost a whole week to exhaustion, and asked whether I could have an extension on my paper: she asked how long I wanted, and when I left it to her, she gave me five days “to give you back the week you lost.”

I once had a professor give me an extension that went all the way up to the day she had to submit my grades to the university all because I told her I was struggling

I think what a lot of people forget about uni/college is that YOU are paying to be there, and that gives you a lot more control over the whole situation than you think. Particularly if you’ve come directly from school and you still have the mentality that these people are adults who are supposed to tell you what to do because you’re a child. Most uni professors think of you as fellow adults who are paying for a specialised service from them, and will want to treat you accordingly (though they usually do keep in mind that many of you are very new to adulting and may need more guidance than more experienced adults)

Also want to add: they cannot help if you don’t ask. If you just don’t do your assignments or show up without speaking to them, you will fail. If you are having a tough time, find the professor you trust the most (or your advisor) and ask them to help you find solutions to your problems.

they cannot help if you don’t ask

One of my students contacted me recently about turning in her final paper- she wanted to know how late she could turn it in, because she was sick and couldn’t make it to campus. She’d turned in the online copy already, and because I knew she couldn’t make it in, I just printed it for her. Problem solved, no points missing for being late. I couldn’t have done that if she didn’t ask! Yes, some profs are jerks- but many are not. Lots of us just want to help.

[A comprehensive overview of chemical-free consumer products

Manufacturers of consumer products, in particular edibles and cosmetics, have broadly employed the term ‘Chemical free’ in marketing campaigns and on product labels. Such characterization is often incorrectly used to imply — and interpreted to mean — that the product in question is healthy, derived from natural sources, or otherwise free from synthetic components. We have examined and subjected to rudimentary analysis an exhaustive number of such products, including but not limited to lotions and cosmetics, herbal supplements, household cleaners, food items, and beverages. Herein are described all those consumer products, to our knowledge, that are appropriately labelled as ‘Chemical free’.

Goldberg and Chemjobber (2014)…  which didn’t actually get published as an actual paper in Nature Chemistry, but the editors liked it so much that they discussed it on their blog and had it formatted in the style of an accepted paper. It was later actually published in German as Goldberg et al. (2016).

One of several papers highlighted in an article sent to us by @bossarmadimon.
