my aesthetic goal in 50 years:

An elegant old chinese dog lady who puts her black with silver streaks hair up with a 簪子and plays lana del ray on my now old-timey devices all while glaring at young people and whatever stupid social trend they are up to

Wow I drafted this in 2016, this did not age well

「胭脂纱」

A lush autumnal photoshoot featuring traditional Chinese Hanfu, via 界之猫. The model is wearing a Tang dynasty-style chest-high Ruqun/襦裙 and double-layer Daxiushan/大袖衫 (large-sleeve robe). Splashes of red, orange, and green combine with gold decorations and translucent leaves to create an outfit that perfectly complements the fall foliage. Exquisite hair ornaments, earrings, and a silver Huadian/花钿 complete the look.

I want to apologise to

- Britney for making fun of her when she had her breakdown

- Monica Lewinski for judging her when she was a 22year old temp sexually assaulted by the most powerful man in the world

- Ke$ha for ever thinking she was trashy when all she wanted to do was make party music

- Kristen Stewart for ever thinking she was dumb when she’s actually one of the coolest people ever

- Megan Fox for ever thinking she was just a slut when actually she was an actress being harassed by her employer.

- Hating all the women who made a career out of having a hot body. Being is shape is hard, beauty is a weapon and auto promotion is hard work.

- All the Mary-Sues, who exist because young girls everywhere want to be part of a story they love so much

- All the female characters I ever snobbed because they got in the way of my ship.

- Hating the color pink during my teenage years, when it’s actually a lovely color and what I resented was society’s pressure to perform femininity.

An Ode to the Goddess of Luo by Ye Lu Ying. Illustration. 2017.

Ye Lu Ying is an award-winning illustrator and designer who studied at Oslo National Academy of the Arts and China Academy of Art, where she is also currently teaching illustration and cartoon drawing. An Ode to the Goddess of Luo (洛神賦) was written by Han Dynasty poet, Cao Zhi (曹植), and is a narration of his imaginary romantic encounter with the Goddess of Luo (洛神)/Consort Mi (宓妃). Consort Mi became a nymph/water deity after she drowned in the Luo river. As described by Cao Zhi’s poetic, beautiful prose, the Goddess of Luo was the source of inspiration for many famous paintings.
Ye was immediately drawn to the story of beauty, loneliness and unrequited love and decided to recreate it with a creative combination of modern and traditional illustration techniques. She used ink on ricepaper to draw the fine lines, and later scanned them onto her computer to colour them in. Ye’s modern reconstruction is combined with her imagination to “give everything a spirit,” from the background elements to the nymph’s dress. She focuses on the expression of traditional Chinese culture through art, and as interviewed by China Daily, she states, “I want to share the beauty of traditional culture with everyone through art,” adding that illustration is a good way to introduce traditional Chinese culture to foreigners.
