To those living in the gulf coast region and are in the path of Hurricane Harvey:

Please prepare as the Hurricane is predicted to make land fall late Friday night!!!

Here are some things off the top of my head that should be done or purchased before Harvey makes landfall.

  • make sure you bring in any furniture that is not weighed down
  • All your animals should have tags on them with phone number or your address on it (fences could possibly be knocked down and animals could get frightened and run off)
  • Stock up on canned foods AND DONT FORGET A NONELECTRICAL CAN OPENER
  • Purchase candles and matches/lighters
  • Propaine tanks/charcoal/lighter fluid - what ever your grills work with-
  • BUY ICE
  • Body wipes for hygiene and fill up bathtubs so you flush your toilets
  • Make sure your back up generators work properly and do not place them in doors
  • WATERRRRRRRRRR - get water and gas first!!!!!
  • Call your relatives and make sure everyone knows what to prepare for.
  • Check in on any relatives or neighbors that may live alone.
  • Buy a windup radio and a wind up light source ( I can’t remember the brand that we have)
  • Make sure your phones are fully charged

So, the rule of thumb when it comes to water is 1 Gallon = 1 Person = Per Day. When getting supplies please take that into consideration.  Also, don’t forget your pets when buying water.     

With that said don’t forget about getting extra food for them.  Also, make sure if you do have to leave you to have their paperwork in case you need proof of shots and what not. ALSO YOUR OWN PAPERWORK.  Take the time to locate and place in a safe space your own paperwork (deeds, medical forms, birth certificates and what not).  My family has a fire/water proof box my mom just puts in our car when we have to evacuate the town.  

Take this time and clean out your freezer/fridge.  If your power is out for more than day basically the stuff in there is worthless.  Also, ice makers will leak out and it’s best to empty while you still have power.  Look it’s leftover time before the storm. 

 So in Louisiana, you can pre-register for DSNAP (disaster food stamps) which if you lost everything in your Refridgerator will go along way in replacing stuff. I don’t know if Texas does the same but if they do and you’re in the affected area do it now so you don’t have to worry about later. 

  • Locate your first aid kit and keep all your essentials together so you’re not scrambling to find them in the dark.
  • The storm is said to linger and the rain will continue until early next week.
  • Please make sure your vehicles are parked on higher ground.
  • This should be common sense but If you own any firearms PLEASE LOCK THEM UP!!!!
