Artists in this platform

If you have an art account in instagram, be careful with accounts that have a random name with a 1340 at the end, one of them commented in one of my photos

i was excited to be noticed and that someone wanted to share my art with credit so i clicked their link and submitted one pic, and also gave them my e-mail address, they told me that my art may not be published soon since they have to much requests, which i think was reasonable, and an hour later i received this

I got even more excited when i saw this e-mail, nothing bad passed trough my mind about it at that time, until i clicked the link and read how i’m supposed to participate

It confused me, if the magazine is advertisement based why do i have to forcefully pay suc, NON-REFUNDABLE price for submitting something that MAY BE published, specifically if their target audience are almost unknown artist and the magazine isn’t even a recognizable one. So i googled it and i found out that i wasn’t the only one:

the same story, started with a comment in, IG then they mail you and tell you about the contest and try to sreal your money, some of them said they were sending them DMs till the point it was kind of annoyin.

Another thing i just searched was that there are a lot of instagram accounts that ended up with the number 1340 and only like 2 of them weren’t related to the magazine

why are there so many accounts for the same magazine? i don’t get it, and the magazine is the one that says that the employees only talk to you through IG or private mail, that means they are part of it, but idk it may be that someone used their identity to steal from others, anyway, i just wanted to share this and please reblog this so one else falls of into this scam, thank you for reading.

MAJOR WARNING TO DISCORD USERS!!!! PLEASE REBLOG AND PASS THIS ALONG!!

Do not accept a friend request from Chrisopeer Davies and Jessica Davies. They are hackers. Tell everyone on your friends list because if somebody on your list adds one of them, they’ll be on your list too. They will figure out your personal computer’s IP and address, so copy & paste this message wherever you can

Heads Up: Also look out for a Discord user by the name of “KeirStarmer” or often just “Keir”. He is going around sending friend requests to random Discord users, and those who accept his friend requests will have their accounts DDoSed and their IP Addresses revealed to him.

Spread the word and send this to as many discord servers as you can. If you see this user, DO NOT accept his friend request and immediately block him.

Please be warned there is a user going around called “KurtStarmer” or just “Kurt” who is mass spamming terribly graphic gore and of such(he is also a hacker). Please spread the word of this to your other servers

trans people taking testosterone need to drink orange juice cause testosterone weakens your immune system!! trans people taking estrogen need to drink milk cause estrogen causes calcium to be absorbed less

If you’re lactose intolerant you can eat nuts and if you’re allergic to oranges, most other fruits have vitamin c. If fruits aren’t an option, there’s also vitamin c supplements.

Good info. Pass it on.

name one native american intellectual off the top of your head, name one native american actor or actress off the top of your head, name one native american senator, one native american news anchor, or an author or a tv personality or a singer or a poet or a comedian, name a single native american teacher you’ve had, can you? probably not

ok so now think of one native american cartoon character you know of or a sports team relating to native americans whether it’s their actual name or their team logo, or a town you live in or near with a “native” name bet a lot of these things came to you right away i bet you didn’t even have to think

needing native representation in media, education and government are not decoy issues, the commercialization and appropriation of native cultures are not decoy issues, the lack of native representation is institutional oppression at work

White people specifically need to reblog this, I don’t CARE if it makes you uncomfortable–that’s the point. Listen to Native voices about Native issues PLEASE

White people specifically need to reblog this

I’m white and this is a really good reminder to add to posts like these. They do make white people uncomfortable, they need to, but that also makes them easier to scroll past (the ”this really isn’t about me” narrative).

As a white person, sometimes I need a reminder that these are the posts I need to be reading and the ones I need to be using my white privilege to spread.

So yeah, white people specifically need to reblog.

if pornhub buys tumblr while the deals pending ill take all my art off this godforsaken site and yall should too bc their company has a policy that legally owns whatever work you upload to it

WOW i didn’t expect my personal post as a heads up if i start removing my art in the future to blow up  but YEAH thank u! mindgeek is super fucking shady and notorious for stealing and exploiting content and dmcas are a nightmare that end up doxxing everyone that tries to take down their content and it’s overall definitely not a company i’d like my (entirely sfw!) art to be associated with, let alone possibly have the rights to. i’ve had a lot of art theft already, and i don’t need it to be more difficult.

obviously a deal hasn’t been made yet, but the company is very openly wanting to buy tumblr and if that happens i’m removing all my art from this website, and depending on any changes they make i’ll likely just leave the site completely. i for one was enjoying the nsfw ban and less bots…….

after the nsfw ban awhile back pornhub was encouraging artists to post their digital art to their site because it was ~welcomed~ and everyone then found out their tos/agreement is a nightmare and they basically own everything on their sites owned by mindgeek and could do what they wanted with your art/potentially profit off of it. also, again, i do not want my art associated with a porn company. at all.

Tips That Can Save Your Kid’s Life.

THIS IS IMPORTANT

When I was a child, from the time I was about four and could understand things, my mom told me and my brother that we should have a secret word. That way, if we were ever in trouble or felt unsafe and we didn’t want the people around us to know we needed her to come get us, we could let her know. So she let us pick the word and my brother and I chose the phrase “peanut butter cups.” (I’m happy to share the phrase now since both my brother and I are adults now).

I used the phrase twice in my life. Once, I was at a friends house when I eight years old. Her dad got really drunk and was throwing things against the wall. I was really scared and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself on the phone when I called my mom to come get me because I didn’t know if he would get more violent if I asked her to come get me. So I called her and was calm and after a couple minutes I asked “Hey mommy, did you get me those peanut butter cups from the store?” And she said “I’ll be right there.” And she came and got me within minutes.

Second, I was a teenager spending the night at a friends house. Her brother and dad were drinking and they started talking about things that made me uncomfortable - ie: what they liked to do to women. My friend didn’t seem perturbed and said that was normal for them and that I shouldn’t worry. But I was worried because they were really drunk and I was 15 and the only ‘woman’ around that wasn’t related to them. I went in my friends room, told her I needed to call my mom and say goodnight. Before I hung up with her I asked “Next time we go to the store, can we get some peanut butters cups? I’ve been craving them.” And she came and got me, just like that.

Two incidents, one as a young child, one years later as a teen. Don’t discredit this stuff, it fucking works. My brother used it a few times too. Let your child pick the word and no never, ever, ever, ever get mad at them for using it no matter what it is.

Pricing your Art

So @dreriart made a post about commission pricing and I thought since it is doin’ the rounds I’d copy-paste this thing I wrote on DA over to Tumblr because for some reason I … never … did that … before?? So one recurring thing I see a lot in the art community in many different formats is ‘how much should I charge for my commissions?’ What normally follows is a lot of bad advice. Terrible advice. So I’m here to give you some good advice and tell you all about how to value your skillset and price accordingly. This guide has been written with the intended audience of folk who are just starting out with commissions, but I hope it will encourage other artists to give themselves a fair wage and, of course, a lot of this can be transposed over to other creative professions as well. So let’s answer the question of ‘how much should I be charging people for work?’ The answer to this is deceptively simple. Here are the questions you need to ask yourself to form an appropriate response:

  1. Where do you live?
  2. How old are you?

For obvious reasons I cannot assist you with these. But once you have these you go to Google and you type in the following: ‘minimum wage per hour in <location name>’ Which is more than likely going to bring up an official government page for your area. Here is the one for the UK since that is where I live. Now what? Well. How old are you? Because some locations have different rates for those in different age brackets. But essentially all you need to do is get the following info: How much is the minimum wage per hour for my age in my area? Now that you have this, how long does a piece take you? You do not need to be exact. A rough guesstimation will do. This will form your base price of: Minimum Wage x Estimated Hours Therefore if I take five hours to paint a portrait and my min wage is £7.83 then my base price for a painted portrait is £39.15.

That is the absolute minimum you should be charging for your work.

And please take into considerations the following:

  • Working outside your comfort zone will up times taken on a piece.
  • If you’re working with traditional materials, how much for paper/canvas/paint/pens/etc?
  • Minimum wage is quite often garbage anyway.

Whenever I say this though, I often get a variety of responses in the negatory for this method. I have answers for each of them. So, let’s run a sort-of-FAQ on this method shall we?

I’m not good enough to price that high.

Yes you are. Who says? Your government, for starters. Also me. Here’s the thing. No matter the quality of your art, you deserve a fair living wage for your work. There are lots of people out there with no understanding of the time, effort and tears that go into honing artistic skills. Digital art, making comics, mastering musical composition, sculpting, or whatever it is all takes time to learn and we are constantly growing and improving. And if someone wants to hand you money for what you are producing guess what? You ARE good enough. That is the proof right there. Another human being wants to give you cold hard cash for something that only you can make. If it puts a different perspective on things for you, think of job roles that would be traditionally minimum wage. Probably the one most people will go to is ‘burger flipping at McDonalds’ as an example of a low skill occupation that is stereotypically easy and for those who failed in life etc. etc. (spoiler alert: it isn’t, but that’s a journal entry for another day). Why should this theoretical failure of humanity earn more than you doing a job that ‘anyone can do’? Because art is absolutely more difficult than cleaning out a McFlurry machine (that’s a legit fact by the way: I’ve cleaned one of those and art is way harder). Also, art is a luxury product my friend. No one needs to be buying commissions of their MMO character. They want it? They can play by our rules. And they will.

My family member/friend/random internet guy said that’s too expensive and I should lower my prices.

Your family member/friend/random internet berk is a fucking idiot at best, or intentionally trying to get you to undersell at worst. Firstly, I’d be willing to bet that the person who said this to you is not an artist. If so, what makes them more qualified than another actual artist to tell YOU how to price yourself? Because you trust their opinion? Yeah, but what if their opinion is formed on a factually incorrect assumption of how much art costs/the time it takes to produce because that is a HUGE deal in our community right now. And what if they just want you to stay cheap because it threatens them? Or, as a consumer, want you to stay cheaper for their own selfish purchasing habits? What then? Tell them to fuck off.

But there is someone better than me charging less! Why should a client pick me over them?

Spoiler alert: there will always be someone better than you charging less. There are thousands of mega quality artists out there. I’m considered expensive for what I produce, especially as I live in a country with a currency that translates highly to other currencies. Yet people constantly ask me for commission work. So what gives? Here are some reasons why a prospective client might chose you over someone else:

  • You are nicer than they are.
  • You are faster than they are.
  • You’re working in a niche sector.
  • They know you personally.
  • They like your art style better.
  • You have lots of good feedback.
  • A friend recommended you.
  • They aren’t even open for commissions right now.
  • They had a bad experience with that artist in the past.
  • You’re easier to purchase from.
  • You have a larger following and purchasing from you exposes that audience to them by proxy.

There are lots of other reasons but price isn’t necessarily often the deciding factor for a lot of clients. Don’t spend your life being concerned with how other people are better than you or you’ll never be happy.   I’m nervous about pricing so highly! What if no one wants my art?If a client doesn’t want to pay you a fair living wage for their luxury item purchase then that’s a client you can probably do without to be honest with you.Someone complained about my prices being so high! What do I do? Refer them to this:

Something worth noting is that minimum wage is normally used for people who are employed (not self employed). So people who work contracted 16, 24, 37 or 40+ hours per week for an employer.

Anyone who is not guaranteed work for a set amount of hours per week is absolutely within their right to charge well over the minimum wage, to cover those hours that they are not guaranteed.

Ever wonder why the plumber is so expensive? Or the electrician? The pc repair guy (£60 to transfer my data? Really? All you do is plug it in and leave it for a few hours..)

That’s why. Because most traders/self employed people don’t have work lined up 9-5 mon-fri (though it’s great news if you do!). If my lovely pc repair tech only charged me £20 to transfer my data, or £5 labour (half an hour) + >insert price of laptop screen here< to repair my screen, he’s never going to make enough money to stay open, because he doesn’t have people coming and going in his shop all day every day.

If you’re considering being a part or full time artist, then perhaps consider not just how many hours it takes you per piece, but how much of your time you want to spend on commissions. If you plan on spending 20 hours per week on it (not just the art itself, but consider things like liasing with customers and promoting yourself as well) then calculate the hours with the minimum wage (in the above instance, it would be 20 x £7.83 = £156.60). Then you figure in that week you can hopefully (and realistically) complete let’s say, 3 commissions. That would be £52.20 each. Already that’s more than the base price stated above (which I am not saying is wrong at all). But you’ve covered yourself for the additional work and downtime hours, and given yourself a real expectation that of what income you’ll be earning per week.

This is a TOP QUALITY addition to my post.

Me trying to figure out the distance between places and how long it’ll take a character to get there in a society that travels mostly on foot:

Image

Relatable…

Avatar
jeanjauthor

Good roads, fairly level (or at least gently graded) terrain, reasonably fit human (most in a walking society would be accustomed to all that walking)…  If they’re walking mostly in daylight hours with regular rest breaks, plenty of food, a good night’s sleep, all in good weather and with only a mild burden…an adult can do about 30 miles (approximately 48km) in a day.

But if all their transport is done on foot and they have no pack animals, yet are hauling a lot of gear on their back, slow it down to 20mi (32km).  If they’re pulling a travois (pole drag) or maneuvering a push-cart, slow it down further.

If they’re traveling at night, it will depend on their night vision and their light source; a mostly foot-based society probably won’t have high-powered thousand-lumens flashlights or headlamps to see by, so slow it waaay down.

If they’re traveling unfamiliar territory, slow it down a little…but on the converse side, if it’s familiat terrain, give them a familiarity bonus and speed up how far they can travel in a given timeframe. (Unless they’re being called home to be yelled at by their parental figures, lol, then slow it waaay down, lol.)

If the road is rough or the terrain steep, slow it down.  If the weather is harsh, slow it down.  If there is no road where they are going, cut the speed according to the terrain.  LIght forest or grasslands, 75%. Modest forests 50%.  Thick hack-your-way underbrush/jungle, slow it to 25% speed…and these calculations are after discerning elevation changes and weather conditions and burden management.  However, slow it to 10% if you have a frikkin’ cart you’re trying to get somewhere, or any other Wide Load.  A travois might be acceptable if it’s narrow.

If you’re traveling with another person and using shoulder carry poles with gear dangling, slow it to about 75% to 50%, depending on their strength and burden weight. (And terrain, weather, etc.)

Also footwear can make a difference.  If it’s rough or thorny terrain and the characters are walking barefoot, they’re definitely going to go slower, or if they’re walking with open sandals.  Boots don’t always guarantee great traction, however.

If it’s pre-rubber-availability, boots and other leather but non-moccassin shoes are usually either hobnailed or not.  If hobnailed, they’re used on muddy terrain, and they can be painful to walk upon over long distances (metal lumps, only a few layers of leather to cut down on construction cost, in most cases).  But walking on cobblestones, flagstones, brick roads, etc, means that the metal studs on the bottoms of your shoes run the risk of slipping. (You’ll gain back some traction on icy paved streets, but not on rain-wet paved streets.)

If they’re meant for walking on paved roads, shoes & boots tend not to be hobnailed, but they lack traction and you’ll slip on wet surfaces, and definitely slip on any muddy or icy slopes.  If your character can afford it, they could have two kinds of footwear…but even so, they’d still have to carry the weight of that second pair of shoes.  People who travel on foot tend to either have lots of servants (often slaves, in historical accounts) to carry extra gear, or they pare down their own gear when traveling.

One way around the different types of terrain traction issue is to make rope sandals, by stitching coils of braided rope in place (think braided rug construction style, not woven like cloth).  The coils can provide “grip” or traction–more than smooth leather in mud, more than hobnail studs on paving–and if you make them thick, they can be remarkably comfortable.  But it’s not always feasible in wet climates because water will soak into the rope, saturate it, and give it mold or mildew problems over time.

Either way, if you’re wearing the wrong soles for the type of surfaces you’re traveling, that will cause problems, too.

Also, people who travel almost entirely by foot do not wear high heels.

I gotta repeat this one:

People who travel almost entirely by foot DO NOT WEAR HIGH HEELS.

(thank you for comng to my TED talk)

Also, chopping the heels off of high heels does not suddenly make them practical walking wear.

You were a laundress in a castle owned by a prominent but reclusive duke. There were other laundresses, but you were the duke’s personal one, largely because of the bloodstains on his clothes and bedding. You asked no questions and passed no judgment. He’d never spoken to you directly, but he did send you small gifts and treasures, for your… discretion.

Early one evening, he decides to thank you in person.

There are rumours about the duke.

Of course, there are always rumours of some sort, but these ones…they’re dark. People whisper that the duke isn’t human. That he sacrifices maidens to dark gods. That he bathes in the blood of his victims.

The people of Fallholt are both terrified and proud of their duke. He is a fierce warrior and keeps them safe from the beasts in the forest and, more importantly, other nobles. For all that there are whispers about him, he rules the people of Fallholt fairly. Which is more than most peasants can say for their lords.

So they whisper, and cast sidelong glances at him when he rides by, but never do more than that.

You are new to the area, having fled a bad situation. The whispers worry you, at first. What kind of man is the duke, that such dark rumours circulate about him?

Your curse in life is your curiosity though, so when a position opens up at the castle you leap at the chance to take it. Few enough other people are willing to work so near the duke anymore, so it hardly matters that you have no references.

That TWIST!! Had me literally put my phone down to scream!

It’s here !! The guide for two-legged people who don’t know how to draw wheelchairs !!! 7 pages of infodump ! Disclaimer : I don’t know everything, I have one (1) experience of wheelchair user who used both bad and good chairs, and I share what I learned.

Image description :

1) Calvin in his wheelchair saying “yo” under a huge title “how to draw manual wheelchairs properly by Calvin Arium, a wheelchair user comic artist”.

2) A character says “my character self propels in a chair that was outdated in 1970 lol” Calvin says “so it looks like you two legged people don’t know the difference between an hospital chair and a chair made to be independant” an arrow point the crapppy chair, saying “we never want to see this again”

a bubble says “the hospital chair is extremely unpractical, tough considering it’s cheaper than a good custom chair a lot of us have only this”

3) a character hurt himself trying to reach the wheels of the hospital chair. Several arrows point why the chair is unpractical : “high backrest restrain shoulders movement” “huge armrest restrains wheel access” “separated footrest : amovible, cheap, bulky” “x structure, foldable but heavy” “huge front casters for stability” “heavy wheels”

4) Several arrows point an active wheelchair (the KSL by Küshall) : “usually no armrest” “a low backrest allow more movement” “light, design, ferning expersive” “special cushion to avoind injuries” “knee angle is usually 90°” “one single piece of frame, sometimes entirely welded” “weight : from 4 to 10kg” “often rigid” “center of the wheel is the center of gravity” “higher quality wheels : less spikes”

5) A hand grab different parts of the wheel, pushing harder in the second half. Bubbles says “some have gloves, some don’t. The hand must grab the biggest area possible. Less movement = more energy. This is a common but not only way to push.Calvin is on his back wheels, rolling on grass and dirt bubble says “popping a wheelie is when a wheelchair user rolls on their back wheels to roll on every complicated surface.

6) several drawings illustrate the folding frame, the ergonomic but rigid and expensive backrest, the separated footrest (only for folding frame), the handles, the folding handles, athe amovibles handles, or no handles, the cool fancy loopwheels, the pretty custom colors

7) More Features ! The fancy rigid-foldable frame, the anti tippers (sometimes used by beginners), the motorization (wheels, smart drive) when propelling yourself is difficult Calvin says “and now vroom vroom motherfuckers”
