TOP 30 STORIES, DAY 11 // RESCUE DOG ⠀ (Sharing my creative process via 30 stories as the shorteststory.com/engine campaign runs!)⠀ ⠀ I openly wept the whole time while writing this one. I wrote it with my adopted senior basset hound, Tommy, curled up at my feet in his little bed under the desk, snoring sweetly.

Tommy passed away in January and I still shatter sometimes when I think about him. He was 9 when we got him, and despite surviving some of the worst conditions the rescue group had seen in 30 years of rehoming dogs, he carried no ill will. He was honest-to-heaven too pure for this earth. He walked into our home, saw a free spot on the couch, helped himself up and was like GUESS I LIVE HERE NOW.

And he did. He lived with us for five beautiful years. He helped five foster dogs make themselves at home in our Toronto apartment and showed them with his calm and his utter sweetness that life goes on, love goes on, even after everything familiar you’ve ever known has been taken away from you.

It’s always interesting to see people’s reactions reading this one at conventions. It’s such a different tone from the stories I usually have on display. Sometimes people will talk to me about pets past and present. Some just give me the look, the I’m-still-not-ready-to-talk-about-this look, a little conspiracy of grief shared between people who have lost something the same way, and then they walk onward, and I have to swallow my throat lump before the next customer comes by.
