Chizuru watched as the days passed. They were peaceful. A peace that came with the death of the ones she held dear in her heart. They had gone on their separate ways after Kondo’s death and one by one, all of her friends turned to dust. Only one person still remained by her side, having lost her family and friends, he was all she had. But he too didn’t have much time left. She could see it, his skin was getting even more pale and his touch was so cold. She turned to gaze at his sleeping form. He looked so carefree like this. Her hand reached out to brush his bangs away from his face softly caressing the skin on his temple as she did so.
“I love you.” She murmured as the morning light entered the room slowly.
“I love you too.” A sleepy voice responded and emerald eyes fluttered open.
“Good morning, Chizuru.” Her husband said as he stared at her with a smile, his hand reached out to grab her own to intertwine their fingers. Chizuru smiled back at him, trying to ignore how cold his touch was. She could feel that his love was a warm breeze to her own heart, giving her the strength to go on for another day. “Good morning, Souji-san. I didn’t mean to wake you.” She whispered as they leaned closer their foreheads touching and she wondered for how many days that will continue. Her husband barely left their house anymore and his appetite was getting worse.
“It’s alright, I liked my waking up call.” He smiled at her his eyes shining which made her giggle in response. He pulled her hand close to his lips and kissed it softly “But I might need to hear it again, to wake up completely.” He teased her and a small blush now adorned her cheeks. “I love you Souji-san. Now I should go make breakfast for us though.” She responded pulling away and a pout appeared on his face.
“I don’t want to let you go.” He responded childish trying to tighten his hold on her but it was so weak that her heart sank. She leaned closer and nuzzled to the crook of his neck. He was warm. She missed when his touch was a burning flame consuming her but now that gentle warmth was enough.
“Alright. Let’s stay like this a bit longer.” She gave in and closed her eyes, breathing in his scent until she was lulled back to sleep.
Souji stayed up watching her with a fond look in his eyes but a sadness lingered in his gaze as well. He could feel it, his body was getting weaker and weaker every day that passed. And a day where Chizuru was away, he found his sheets stained with blood. He had covered it up washing them right away, but the knowledge made him understand that the end was near. He let out a shaken breath. “I never want to let you go.” He murmured softly kissing her forehead. He wanted to live but he knew that it was a miracle that he was still breathing. All he could do was pray that it would last a bit longer, maybe until the next spring came.
He wanted to see the cherry blossom tree he had planted for her in full bloom. Because when those flower petals fell to the ground, his eyes would also close. He had made a promise to leave something behind for her to remember. He didn’t want to leave her alone. Not now, not ever. He looked at her and spoke a bit louder this time.
“I will never stop loving you, I will always be next to you. I will be the stars watching over you at night, I will be the sun greeting you in the morning. Every day, every year, forever.” And with that he also closed his eyes.
Souji never believed in something like a god. He had never reached out to him before. But now he prayed to everything that existed out there, to let him stay there by her side a bit longer.
