”there is girl autism and there is boy autism” is a piss poor way of reading “autistic girls may internalize their autistic traits differently as kids” and “we perceive the same traits differently when they’re on girls.”

*boy goes into the doctor being very quiet, only talks about a few subjects, fidgits around, isn’t good at understanding people* good lord, this young man needs help! here’s a diagnosis, terrible therapy, and we think we’re helping you. but hey at least you have a diagnosis and your condition is recognized.

*girl goes into the doctor being very quiet, only talks about a few subjects, fidgits around, isn’t good at understanding people* she’s just Quirky and Shy :) we’re gonna leave her alone for years and hope she figures it out by herself.

this post is going around againand i’d appreciate it if this version was the one rebloged

yes. also why boys will be diagnosed anti social personality disorder and girls will receive a borderline personality disorder diagnosis, despite displaying the same symptoms.

And bipoc will more likely get diagnosed with "oppositional defiant disorder," despite also displaying the same symptoms

UPDATE 4/11/2023:

I swapped out the colloidal silver nasal spray info for xylitol nasal spray info. I originally included colloidal silver spray because of the linked study and recommendation from RTHM, but I don't want to be pointing people toward something with notable health risks. Xylitol spray (Xlear) is also cheaper and more widely available!

Why is it cute and trendy for girls to wear men’s flannel shirts and baggy boy’s sweatpants, but when a boy tries to wear anything remotely close to girl’s clothes, they are considered “girly” or “gay”?

Do you know why?

Do you want to know why?

Because our society thinks its degrading to be feminine.

GIVE THIS THING AS MANY NOTES AS POSSIBLE. EVERYBODY MUST SEE THIS AND HAVE IT ON THEIR BLOG. HOLY SHIT.

No its because most boys look ridiculous in girls clothes, but girls look decent in “boyfriend” clothes. Stop trying to make EVERY THING into some form of female oppression.

It’s not “boyfriend” clothes. Clothes do not inherently have gender, they are pieces of fabric and no one cares about your hetero insertions. There was a time when it was normal for young men to wear dresses, clothing was much more gender neutral.

Cute little boys in their boy dresses!

And dresses and skirts look fine on men:

Image

In different cultures around the world different items of clothing are worn that in many countries would be seen as feminine:

And they all look fabulous as fuck, like wow!

The only reason you think so now is because you are socialised differently. Which is ok, that happens, but when you assert things as facts and don’t look at any of the culture behind them you looking like an anal fissure.

Do not project your issues onto other men, men can wear whatever the fuck they want and look fabulous as hell.

YES YES YES!

Yes.

scotty-pup

Just saying… A kilt in Scotland is no way feminine… Please get out culture right lol

…yes, that was, in fact, the point. That these clothes from a certain perspective could read as feminine but that is just our cultural biases. That clothing does not have a gender and looking at clothes through the lens of different cultures is a way to see that the same kind of clothing in a different light.

Thanks for the assist.

Also, as a complete aside. The poster in this thread that kicked this off with the “not everything is female oppression” became a terffff. There is a poetry there, they really said they were going to make everything about biological oppression in the future and also stand SO HARD by the fact that people should not be allowed to blur the gender lines with fashion.

This is a great way to explain the difference between gender/innate and gender as in gender role: Skirts are feminine not because of biology but because of human-made rules. Look at the kilts and tunics and men's skirts of other cultures that have different rules. Look at medieval Chinese dudes with long hair or Founding Fathers with ponytails. A trans person is saying "our culture has social categories and I'm in this one, not that one." A nonbinary person is saying "don't put me in any category." Some people say "the categories are bullshit and we shouldn't maintain them." None of that necessarily means that the speaker believes that the biology of male and female isn't real.

The best piece of advice I ever got was not meant as advice, but as an edict. If I was going to threaten people as a joke, it had to be so far out of proportion with what happened that it would be obvious I was joking. This changed how I expressed frustration with others. It then changed how I expressed frustration with myself.

Not “I’m going to hit you” but “I am going to buy a tuna sub from the gas station and hide it under the seat of your car”

Not “I’m going to kill myself” but “I am going to walk into the desert and let the scarabs take me”

The other side then happened. When I mess something up, instead of saying it’s bad and perpetuating negative thoughts, swing hard the other way.

Not “this art is terrible” but “this shall be framed and mounted on the wall in my museum exhibition as testament to the suffering I had to overcome”

Have been doing this since high school. It was my drama teacher who asked me to please stop scaring the actors. The other half of the edict was that I had to say it in a polite tone, and end it with either please or thank you.

Life changing. 10/10 Mr Muëller. Highly reccomend.

I really need to do more studying and write an essay on how Americanism is a genuine folk religion which reveres capital and the vague concept of “the free market” as a god of providence to be pleased in order to lead a prosperous life, also that the founding fathers are prophetic, perhaps even messianic figures who basically gave birth to this god through the revolutionary war, and that the vast majority of conservative Christians in America revere capital more than the god they claim to serve in an ironic sort of golden calf situation.

I think you’re just stupid, bro

Apotheosis of Washington

There is a trend amongst depictions of the founding fathers to show them as literal christ figures, a trend that started very early in the nation’s life.

I’d also like to point out Washington & Lincoln Apotheosis, artist unknown, about 1865, the same year as lincoln’s assasination

Image

The personification of America in the form of Columbia, a goddess of both the land and the concepts that America tends to inhabit. A pre-anime Hetalia. She was often used in depictions of Manifest Destiny, a religions ideal that stated that America, by God’s will, must go from coast to coast.

American Progress by, John Gast, 1872. Note the indigenous people cast in literal darkness, away from the light. The religions deification of America relies upon colonialism and white supremacy

Avatar

Like, there are actual studies on this stuff. Look up “American civil religion” if you’re struggling for search terms. Or “American founder worship.”

also worth noting the vatican lists americanism as a specific official heresy. so even beyond the mountains of scholarship on the religion of americanism from various religious & secular perspectives, the roman catholic church itself officially recognises it as a religious heresy in the general region of idolatry that can be used in official church courts as grounds for excommunication. and it’s a religious view that’s drilled into americans so aggressively that to them it seems perfectly natural, whereas to most of the rest of the world ‘america’ seems more like a terrifying mind control cult than a country. this has led to large swathes of american catholics being members of a different religion than that of all the worlds other catholic populations and is a big part of how they became the closest thing to a pan-catholic in-joke, a global laughing stock if you will

So when they say "Americanism as heresy," what are we talking about? The term was coined in 1899 by Pope Leo XIII. That's probably why so many people in this century haven't heard of it.

It's hard to tell exactly what's going on, but Pope Leo was addressing a group of ideas including 1) the Church should tone down doctrine to adapt to modern life, 2) separation of Church and state is good, 3) active virtues are better than passive ones, 4) natural virtues are better than supernatural ones, and a few others.

So, in this context, the Americanism that the Church addressed as heresy does not appear to be the same thing as the founder worship and idea of manifest destiny described here.

you guys should really try talking to older people sometimes. like anyone over the age of forty. it would cure you i swear

family doesn't count. go to a local lutheran churches coffee hour and chat with the old ladies.

there's a shitton of reasons for this btw.

one, because a lot of young queer people have drawn an "us v them" line in their heads where it's "the queer community v anyone born before 2000" which is inherently harmful to older queer people

two, because a lot of the time, if you have anxiety for the future, talking to someone who went through it already helps. i felt like shit for not going to college until a sixty year old man with a doctorate told me it was the biggest waste of time on earth

three, because i refuse to believe most of you have ever spoken to anyone not completely poisoned by tiktok or twitter. touch grass and talk to someone who remembers pay phones

Avatar

Here for it but why the entire fuck would you go to a church coffee hour of all places? Hit up elders in a crafting or gaming community. Talk to elder punks and goths. Start a knitting or quilting circle. Find out if your local senior center is looking for volunteers. Yes absolutely talk to old people - you do not need to specifically seek out the ones likeliest to disapprove of you.

I mean, for one it's one of the more accessible spots to do something like that without organizing it yourself or having to sign up to volunteer. Not necessarily the best if you have other options, but some people won't. But also like. It can be good to talk to older people who disagree with your beliefs too? Especially if you go in with good intentions and a desire to avoid arguments, it can humanize them to you into people who have harmful beliefs rather than monsters whose humanity has been revoked, essentially, and that's something some younger folks sorely need to be reminded of.

Like, it's not the BEST suggestion for most people, certainly, but it's not totally out of pocket either.

(The Washington Post)

For those who don't know, the US Supreme Court just ruled that states are allowed to enforce trans healthcare for minors. Undoubtedly, this will trigger a wave of other states that either hope to pass or have already passed policies to do the same. This is going to kill children, and harm more in long-lasting ways.

So, how can you help?

FUCKING VOTE. I don't care if you don't like Biden, he's not the only one on the ballot. Vote representatives into your city council who will turn our city into a sanctuary city. Vote for governors and state reps who will, even if they don't pass new protections, oppose bans being pushed through. Chsllenge and kick out conservative incumbents who are banking on their races being obscure enough for people to not vote in.

Anyone telling you voting is useless is either lying to you or grossly uninformed and think saying this is the edgy new take that will make them look hip and informed. Yes, the system is broken. But short of burning the whole thing to the ground (which personally I'm not a fan of as I quite enjoy having like. Roads and the FDA) what we can do is to change it for the better, by starting with the local races and working our way up.

Avatar

Vote for president but not only for president. Vote for senator. Vote for your congressional district. Vote in state elections because it's the state legislatures that pass these $#@& things. The most powerful branch of our government is the legislature.

I need to live another twenty years purely to see what kind of bullshit the Tolkien estate gets up to with respect to The Silmarillion in 2044.

Context for non-dweebs: Unlike Tolkien's other well known works, The Silmarillion was published posthumously; Tolkien died in 1973, and The Silmarillion first saw print in 1977.

Though Tolkien had shown drafts of The Silmarillion to publishers during his lifetime, there are substantial differences between those drafts and the book that was actually published. It's been a matter of great interest – read: nerd drama – in the Tolkien fandom exactly how much of the published Silmarillion is really the work of J R R Tolkien, and how much of it is original authorship by his son Christopher.

The Tolkien estate has historically maintained that The Silmarllion is all J R R Tolkien, and that Christopher merely acted as an editor, because "by J R R Tolkien (edited by Christopher Tolkien)" is going to sell better than "by Christopher Tolkien (based on the work of J R R Tolkien)".

If The Silmarillion really is 100% J R R Tolkien's work, and Christopher Tolkien was merely an editor, then – since J R R Tolkien died in 1973 – the whole thing will enter the public domain on January 1st, 2044 in all life-plus-70 jurisdictions (i.e., most of the big ones, including the US).

If, however, any major part of the published Silmarillion constitutes original authorship by Christoper Tolkien, then the term of copyright would instead be calculated based on his date of death in 2020, pushing its earliest possible entry into the public domain in life-plus-70 jurisdictions back to January 1st, 2091.

Thus, there exists the possibility that the Tolkien estate might be able to preserve their ownership of The Silmarillion by arguing that they've been lying the whole time about Christopher Tolkien not contributing any original authorship to the published work.

Would it work? Probably not – but it'd be fun to see them try!

(The preceding summary is, of course, focused on copyright duration. If you're not concerned about the copyright angle and just want to start shit on purpose, what you do is bring up the theory that the Tolkien estate's claim that Christopher Tolkien merely edited the work is true only because the original portions of the published Silmarillion were actually ghost-written by Guy Gavriel Kay.)

Twenty years ago, February 15th, 2004, I got married for the first time.

It was twenty years earlier than I ever expected to.

To celebrate/comemorate the date, I'm sitting down to write out everything I remember as I remember it. No checking all the pictures I took or all the times I've written about this before. I'm not going to turn to my husband (of twenty years, how the f'ing hell) to remember a detail for me.

This is not a 100% accurate recounting of that first wild weekend in San Francisco. But it -is- a 100% accurate recounting of how I remember it today, twenty years after the fact.

The tumblr experience is having politics that make the most left leaning progressive you know irl blush and then logging on here and getting called a bootlicker fascist because you said that you dont think we should make the reign of terror happen again

Me irl: the problem isnt taxes, youre thinking too small. The problem is that the federal government isnt taxing the right people the right amount. Theyre taking all our extra cash in our measly little wealth bracket and letting the billionaires hang on to more money than they can ever spend in a lifetime. The only way anybody gets a single billion is either through exploitation or inheriting it from someone else who did the exploitation, nobody who has that kind of money earned it legitimately. Not only do we need to strip that back into social safety nets for those of us theyre bleeding dry instead, but they need to establish hard laws and regulations to prevent that kind of exploitation from happening in the first place!

My coworkers: man, youre a real red-card commie, aren't you? You gonna start telling us to vote NDP and that healtcare isnt a scam too? Jesus christ go give someone else your goddamn revolution pamphlets, lenin.

Me on tumblr: while i appreciate the animosity towards billionaires, i dont think literally dragging a guillotine into the streets and beheading people as a public spectacle is going to actually solve the problems inherent in the system considering the french already tried that and it didnt work out well for them. Also i dont think anybody has the right to decide who lives and who dies, im pretty anti death penalt-

Tumblr users: how does that boot taste, fascist?

Yeah quiet quitting is great and all but have you tried chaotic working?

Like. I remember back in my grocery store cashier days I did so much crazy shit.

When WIC (Women, infants, and children voucher program to help low income mothers/families with children) people were in my line I would pretty much know who they were. Before the cards they had to tell us upfront they were WIC and show us their vouchers for what they were allowed to get (it was awful some times. Like. 2 gallons of milk. $4 worth of vegetables etc etc). They’d always have items hanging back, waiting to see what the total was and if they would have to take it off the belt.

I began to place the fruits/vegetables a certain way on the register scale so that like 1/2lbs of grapes read as like .28lbs or something. Then act shocked when I said that they still had X amount of lbs left. They got all their fruit and vegetables.

I think it started to kinda? Catch on to the women? Because I would have the same moms in my line month after month. And even after they switched to the cards (they worked like food stamp cards?) I’d still do the same thing. They were able to get more produce for whatever shitty max amount Indiana gave them.

Anyways. Be chaotic. It’s more fun that way.

The stone was immovable, in the past. Indestructible. A spire of granite no mortal hand could even alter.

But mortal hands build clever tools, and these last few hundred years I have lived in dread that they will break this, my sacred stone, the last link that preserves me, a faint shadow of a forgotten god. While my sacred stone stands, I do not, quite, fade away.

I am in a park, now, clipped and tamed, my forests long gone. But they landscape around me and my stone, admiring its beauty, so I do not complain. While they take pleasure in the stone, I am safe.

There is a playground a few lengths away, and the laughter and happy shrieking rouse me a little from my sleep. I watched over children, once. It’s nice to hear them again.

But I don’t truly awaken until the Offering is made.

Little hands touch my stone, with curiosity and a sort of reverence that only the very young feel now. For a child young enough the world is still a mystery, and even an ancient granite stone provokes wonder. So I stir, when she touches the stone, becoming hazily aware.

And then, solemnly, the child places a tiny colourful object in the roughly shaped alcove in the stone’s side, the place where offerings were laid two thousand years ago and more, and I awaken. Many people have put things in that alcove, of course… to take pictures, usually, these days, or putting a lost object where it will be seen. Merely to place an object in the alcove isn’t enough. A true offering is given as a gift, with intent.

As this is.

If you fucks actually go through with not voting on your next USA president elections and subsequently lead Trump to power again.

Yes. Yes I'm going to blame every single American for that. Collective responsibility and all that jazz.

Avatar
ohsalome

Explaining in simple terms: if you don't vote for Biden because "he is murdering palestinian babies", you will get Trump as a president, who, being an open and proud islamophobe, will murder even more palestinian babies.

It is no good situation when you have to choose between two shitty candidates. But you have a two-party system.

russia has previously aided trump during elections, and they will do so again. A call to boycott the elections = a call to support trump

You are in no position to afford the privilege of being idiots.

Also this.

Also, a lot of his goons have been filling a LOT of important spots in the military and civilian fields to have positions available for trump to fill in with his loyalists and to easier do a hostile takeover if he wins the election.

IF YOU DON'T VOTE FOR BIDEN YOU WILL GET A DICTATORSHIP BY TRUMP AND WE WILL ALL BE FUCKED

I don't know how many times we have to tell people to make everythingin their power to stop Trump from coming to power again. USA will be fucked. Ukraine will be fucked. Palestine would be fucked. We don't know how many other countries will be fucked.

Trump's presidency already gave cart blanche for the international far right rise, and I don't think we need to spell out to people that the state of the world today is directly credited to Trump's presidency, his incompetence, him being Russian puppet, etc etc.

As much as I am actually an opponent of the whole idea that USA is responsible of everything in the world, it does have a huge influence on international politics scene.

SO GO VOTE.

And since USA is a democracy, then, again, y'all are responsible for the president you elect.

“He says, ‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’ I said, no, no, no — other than day one. We’re closing the border and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator,” Trump said to Hannity before an audience in Iowa.”

Calling New York City and Chicago “crime dens,” the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination told his audience, “The next time, I’m not waiting. One of the things I did was let them run it and we’re going to show how bad a job they do,” he said. “Well, we did that. We don’t have to wait any longer.”

Trump has not spelled out precisely how he might use the military during a second term, although he and his advisers have suggested they would have wide latitude to call up units. While deploying the military regularly within the country’s borders would be a departure from tradition, the former president already has signaled an aggressive agenda if he wins, from mass deportations to travel bans imposed on certain Muslim-majority countries.

A law first crafted in the nation’s infancy would give Trump as commander in chief almost unfettered power to do so, military and legal experts said in a series of interviews.

The Insurrection Act allows presidents to call on reserve or active-duty military units to respond to unrest in the states, an authority that is not reviewable by the courts. One of its few guardrails merely requires the president to request that the participants disperse.

“The principal constraint on the president’s use of the Insurrection Act is basically political, that presidents don’t want to be the guy who sent tanks rolling down Main Street,” said Joseph Nunn, a national security expert with the Brennan Center for Justice. “There’s not much really in the law to stay the president’s hand.”

A spokesman for Trump’s campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment about what authority Trump might use to pursue his plans.

Donald Trump - has overtly 1) said that he wants to be a dictator and end American democracy and 2) HAS TAKEN ENOUGH ACTIONS IN THAT DIRECTION FOR US TO KNOW THAT IT'S NOT ALL TALK

Joe Biden - is too old and too middle-of-the-road on a road that already skews too far in the wrong direciton but he is a grinder. He is what's good about twentieth century style politics. He builds relationships and works behind the scenes and doesn't announce every single step he's making until one day suddenly he's restoring veterans' benefits to LGBT service members who were ousted for being LGBT.

Not only is Joe Biden not the worst he could do but because of his tendency to work behind the scenes (when you take away the cameras, many of our elected officials stop performing for the cameras and start acting like rational adults) we don't always se what he's doing or trying to do until it's done.

Yes, the Democratic Party should have spent the past four years preparing Warren or Harris or someone younger, but they didn't.

I say we give the grinder another four years to work.
