I think it’s incredibly fucked how capitalism discourages learning for learning’s sake. People will have interests they’ve spent years researching then say it’s “useless knowledge” bc it didn’t go towards a college degree and isn’t part of their job. Learning is never useless! Your brain is growing and developing throughout your whole life! People would never have epiphanies or sudden lightening strikes of creativity if they weren’t learning new things! That goes double for topics like science, politics, and history, which inform your understanding of the world you live in!

I fucking knew it, I SAID it: they're making ADHD people the next culture war targets. They will 'just ask questions' until we lose every scrap of ground we've gained in the last decade and more. We may not quite inspire the same level of hatred as a sexual minority, but we can very easily be made to inspire disdain and that also works.

They will strip us of our accomodations and our medications and try to stifle any sense of shared identity, and if that kills some of us, oh well. So long as it fuels another outrage cycle, fine.

So many of the tropes they've been using on trans people work extremely well on ADHD people too! "There are too many of these people suddenly! It must be a fad! It spreads through friend groups! And online! People are going private for diagnoses and that's bad! They are using pOwERfUl medical interventions and we think it's freaky!"

I saw the first ripples of this in terf circles about two years ago. And of course it's spread.

6% of British ADHD people lost their jobs in the last year thanks to the meds shortage. SIX PER CENT! And that just made these ghouls go "ooh, tasty, what else can we do?"

Recently an 'expert' was on the BBC saying people see ADHD diagnosis as a "golden ticket." Laurence Fox has been ranting that the condition doesn't exist and threatening "'you won't poison my child's body [with ADHD meds] against my consent"

People need to be aware this is going to get worse. Maybe, if we're lucky, it won't get really bad. But it's going to get worse than it is now.

Meanwhile, I’m in the line of work whose job it is to help families find non-med solutions and our research and trainings are clear:

We have absolutely nothing to offer that reliably works as well as stimulant medication. In fact the way to avoid the sometimes dire effects of ADHD is early and reliable access to stimulant medication.

Negative effects like fucking addiction.

Yes, reliable access to stimulant meds helps PROTECT people with ADHD from addiction.

But insurance doesn’t want to pay for meds and there are lobbying groups fighting to make sure more people are diagnosed with or actually treated for ADHD.

Policies that come from those folks are NOT in the best interests of patients, schools, or families.

Have any of these people ever MET an unmedicated/undiagnosed ADHD person? Literally every single one I’ve known is self medicating with horrifying amounts of caffeine and cigarettes (I got my diagnosis as an adult — I was chugging Starbucks and chain smoking cloves and then vaping non stop until I got my Dx and Rx meds). There’s no way that’s worse than measured, monitored medication. A lot of which has been around for ages.

God these people get SO PISSED when something works. I was copping shit for taking Gabapentin — a very old anti seizure drug that works for nerve pain — because “people end up needing to keep upping the dose and then they take it forever”. Because they’re in fucking pain!! It’s not addictive. It’s not an opiate. It only makes you feel good because fuck it feels good not to feel like you’re being bit up by fire ants all the time.

My mind fucking boggles. Can’t have shit that works.

I have also got in shit for Gabapentin. As far as I can tell from reading, it does jack shit for seizures, but is very good for pain. It just keeps its old classification to avoid booting about a bajillion people off the med by recalling it to reclassify.

I am currently off my Ritalin for weeks now because my fucking pharmacy refuses to let me have more than a month prescribed at a time (as in, the prescription itself runs out, no refills) and now won't let me just use the app or call it in. I have to physically be standing there. For Ritalin, something I literally had a pharmacy student at that same pharmacy steal from me last summer (prompting an investigation) because people perceive it as a performance enhancer, when it just allows me to like, shower and eat.
