Danny pulled his upper lip back in contemplation. Every scripture, verse and line of the Torah had been ingrained in his brain through meticulous study, but he had never troubled himself with choosing a ‘favorite’ until now. It felt odd to hold one in higher esteem than the others.  

Eyes flickering upward and assuming an air of ease, Danny spoke:

 ‘ עכשיו זה בא על כשהוא סיים לדבר אל שאול, כי נשמתו של יהונתן לסרוג לנשמה של דיוויד ויונתן אוהבת אותו כמו את עצמו. שאול לקח אותו באותו יום ולא נתן לו לחזור לבית אביו. אז יונתן כרת ברית עם דוד, כי הוא אוהב אותו כמו את עצמו. יונתן הפשיטו מעליו את הגלימה כי היה עליו ונתן אותו דוד, עם השריון שלו, כולל את חרבו קשתו חגורתו. אז דוד יצא בכל מקום שאול שלח אותו, ושגשגו; ושאול להגדיר אותו על אנשי המלחמה. ‘

The words fell from his tongue fruitfully: rich, tonal and laced with notes of sweetness. The significance of this passage had only recently revealed itself to him, once distant in the mind of a lonely child. Now – now, perhaps, in the sincerest sense, he had his own David, and the relevancy of their relationship had become prominent.

He was truly thankful for that.

Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself. Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt. So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and prospered; and Saul set him over the men of war.
