Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

>:)c

May I present to you, nationalclothing.org?

It doesn't have everything, but it's still my first source when researching traditional clothing from other cultures.

There's also this resource on historical fashion: Claire’s Historical Fashion Reference & Resources

another addition as far as physical media goes there is the encyclopedia of national dress (that i still need to buy myself bc this kind of thing is super important to my sort of fantasy designing) but yes i do agree i wish there was EVEN MORE documentation on this

I notice alot of my followers on here skipping these posts just to mess with my lgbt ones, suspiciously the white popular ones.

Heres a not so friendly reminder, as an lgbt metis person, i dont give a single fuck what your blog is themed or if this is too painful for you to look at. Reblog this post. Reblog this post with the sources of the 751 children who were found.

Your compliance and silence as well as the compliance and silence of your ancestors is what allowed these schools to open and kill first nations children. The children of MY people.

Dont follow me if you cant reblog this post or the one with sources to your political blog or your most popular blog. Add trigger warnings if you must but if your political blog is only focused on the harms you personally face like being lgbt then you need to see some bigger pictures and stop being afraid of angering your racist mutural or actually saying some shit about racism. If you can reblog some antifa graphics or add blm to your bio to be a surface level ally, you can reblog some sources on the genocide first nations people faced and still face today.

They were CHILDREN.

They were murdered in cold blood.

For anyone who doesn't know what's going on in Canada right now (which, let's be real, is probably everyone who's not in Canada):

This week, a mass grave was discovered at a former Indian Residential School, in Kamloops, BC. The grave contained the bodies of 215 Indigenous children.

For people outside of North America, residential schools were places that Indigenous children were sent to, to have their language and culture stripped away from them. They were literally stolen from their families, and scattered across Canada, to ensure that they would be surrounded by children who didn't speak their language. They were given Christian names and forced to speak English. They were horrendously abused, and the survivors have been traumatized.

Hundreds of children never returned. The assumption has always been that they died. This has now been confirmed.

The school in Kamloops closed in 1978. They are now trying to identify bodies to inform family members. The last residential school closed in the 1990s. There is growing demand to search all of them, but the government hasn't responded to that, as of yet. Ottawa JUST gave in to pressure to fly the Canada flag at half mast. They weren't even going to do that.

This is the reality if anti-Indigenous racism in Canada. The residential schools may be closed, but that hasn't stopped the abduction of Indigenous children, let alone the hundreds of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

counterpoint: it’s really funny.

lil nas x: i was demonized from a young age because of the unique intersection of my blackness and queerness within the church and now im reclaiming that for myself and showing young queer people that they always have a place where they’ll be accepted, even if they have to carve it out of the hell they were promised

random shitforbrains tumblr users: actually portraying queer people, including yourself, as sexually empowered or subversive in any way makes the homophobes mad :/// maybe just act normal??? idk pulling that “”stunt”” is kinda homophobic

As someone who grew up in an Evangelical church– art like the Lil Nas video is exactly what queer folks should do. Part of why the religious right is so up in arms about this video, I think, besides him using their own imagery right back at them, is because of how open and unapologetic it is. Because in their minds, if you’re queer, you should be ashamed. They want you to feel bad and shameful and wrong about who you are, because then they can push you to repent. They can control you, because as far as you know, there are no other options.

Someone who is open and comfortable in their queer identity is intensely threatening to them. A lot of Evangelical communities work really hard to limit knowledge of anything outside their narrow worldview. Something like the Lil Nas video, which is widely popular and likely to be seen even by sheltered kids and teens? Which directly undercuts their messaging by telling kids “even if you’re in Heaven, you’re going to be miserable if you’re not being your true self”? Yeah, I think that will absolutely cause a lot of queer kids to start questioning, and that is terrifying for the religious right. He’s supposed to be ashamed! Why isn’t he ashamed? Their kids are going to think they don’t have to be ashamed either!

No wonder they’re so mad.

Incidentally, this was a lot of the motivation behind reclaiming the word queer. There’s a reason the rallying cry in the 80s and 90s was “we’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.” If we were screaming it at the high heavens and wearing it as a badge of pride, what were they going to do?

Also?

I watched the video, just to see what all the fuss was about. THERE’S NOT ACTUALLY ANYTHING PARTICULARLY PERVERTED ABOUT IT. He kisses a guy and there’s the implication said guy goes down on him, there’s the trial, he uses a stripper pole as a way to land on his feet in hell and then he gives Satan a highly choreographed, mostly-done-in-still-shots lap dance. There’s no grinding, there’s no groping, I assure you I have seen videos with FAR more sexual imagery coming out of Generic White Pop Star #3416 than this. (I’m a pop fan. I can say that.) It was very carefully crafted such that what he’s on trial for isn’t a specific action or sexual act—it’s that anything happened at all. It’s also worth noting that while the judges at the trial are dressed in a manner we associate with women, they’re also covered from neck to feet in a very Christian style (while LNX is mostly bare, exposed, and vulnerable). There is SO MUCH costume theory and queer history being represented in that shot, it’s incredible.

Saying he’s portrayed himself as a pervert is betraying that you think any sexual act is perverted if it comes from a gay man. Check yourself.

real power is going outside knowing you look ugly and also knowing that if you chose to perform femininity in accordance with patriarchal standards you could look attractive, but genuinely prefering to look ugly and not feeling bad about it. feels good feels organic

True, honest, genuine power is going outside knowing you look gorgeous bc you don’t need to perform hyper femininity the way men want you to and that you can be stunning despite patriarchal ideals

i appreciate the intent but i actually made this post in direct response to the liberal feminist tendency to widen the parameters of “beauty” rather than challenging the concept itself and specifically the notion that women must be beautiful to be valuable, and as such my choice of words was very deliberate—i have no interest in being assured i am beautiful and a great deal of interest in existing without being told i must be such. this post is not self-deprecating and does not call for bathroom-stall platitudes. ugliness in women is threatening and i embrace that.

you know what’s really genuinely unsettling? the degree to which men fucking do not want to sympathize with/be interested in women.

male audiences will happily watch a dozen superhero shows, but then something like Agent Carter or Supergirl turn up and they’re panned from the first trailer and have to struggle for ratings. male audiences will watch countless installments of a franchise as long as it’s about men doing man things but the second a character like Rey or Furiosa or god forbid four entire female Ghostbusters steps up and takes a position of prominence it’s “pandering sjw bullshit”.

it’s not pandering. men just aggressively don’t want to have to be invested in a woman’s narrative and it’s really gross.

anyway re: everyone telling me to “Stop making this a gender thing” or some variation on that

this isn’t like… an opinion I’m pulling out of my ass here? this starts where earlier than tv shows and hollywood blockbusters, when all the kids in a class are reading Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or Eragon o Lord of the Rings or Maze Runner or whatever the hip book is right now. the books like that, the ones that become popular reading, are overwhelmingly about male leads, because male is still considered the default.

there’s a split in YA literature, between books that are “for everyone” and “for girls”, and that’s honestly the entire issue in a tiny little box right there. stories about men are supposed to be accessible for everyone, but stories about girls are seen as 1.) inherently for women and 2.) something that only women will care about.

men grow up in a society that doesn’t make them go out of their way to get into the heads of women and empathize with then. historically it’s been very easy for men to not engage with female-led media if they don’t want to, whereas (like someone else commented on this post) girls and women have had very little choice in the past because everything was about men. we didn’t even question it.

and now the women are arriving in mainstream media in ways that say they’re important and they matter and

small (or sometimes not so small) but loud-enough-to-be-acknowledged groups of men lose. their. shit.

because they think there’s something inherently Not For Them about a woman’s story, and they never learned how to deal with it.

(also once again, because  LOT of ya’ll don’t seem to get this here: I’m trying to talk about knee-jerk reactions to female-centered works - often before they even come out. not whether or not you personally thought [x show or movie] was good. ya feel?)

i don’t think i’ve ever read a single post that i’ve agreed with so totally and so immediately and here’s why:

i love books, right? and from the ages of about 11-15 i was insanely invested in teenage/ya fantasy and sci-fi. harry potter, percy jackson, all of the books op listed above- and one of the things that made those books so great was that you could have a conversation about them with anyone! a lot of the guys in my class also loved this type of genre and i’d often talk about books with them (even my own brother has read all of the books listed above) we’d have long, interesting conversations about these books and it was great.

but then i’d mention something about the hunger games, or the divergent series, or uglies, the raven cycle, mara dyer, the mortal instruments, the selection, etc. and the response would always be the same: either ‘i haven’t read it’ or ‘i couldn’t get into it’ or ‘it doesn’t seem like my type of thing’

even outside of the ya genre, looking at something like contemporary fiction or whatever- do you know how many guys will talk endlessly about the great gatsby or catcher in the rye or any other male-centric novel? but when you bring up something as influential as pride and prejudice or jane eyre or practically /anything/ written by/focused around a woman- you get the same responses as before

society has made it so that women have no choice whether to engage with male-centric stories or not: from children, a big portion of the media we consume focuses on the male perspective and like,,, that’s not necessarily a bad thing /in itself/- the bad thing is that it doesn’t work both ways and it’s not an even split. whereas young girls are surrounded by and expected to empathise with films/books/media concerning men, it’s not the same for young boys: they have narratives that either focus entirely or largely around them.

women have no trouble consuming media that focuses on a male narrative because it’s been labelled as the default, the ‘normal’- whereas men struggle to watch/read anything that doesn’t focus around them because they’ve never /had/ to.

Tips for kids online

  • Pseudonyms! Use them! Even if it’s a nickname, a favorite character’s name, a letter, your username, use a pseudonym. Especially if you have a unique name
  • Private information is PRIVATE. Last name, age, full birthday. Things that could be used to identify you should not be shared. Remember those “enter anyone’s name and learn everything about them” websites? They aren’t kidding around, and they’re dangerous.
  • Your house is your business. Don’t share your home address, school name, city, even sharing what state you live in could be risky. There’s no reason for people online to need to know this, there’s no reason for people online to ask for it. This is a red flag
  • Pictures are worth a thousand words. Take note of what’s in pictures you post. Can you see a state flag? A pet’s collar with a home address on it? Does that screenshot have your phone number in it? Be careful with EXACTLY what you post.
  • Once you post it, it’s not yours anymore. Anyone on the internet can share a post, take screenshots, repost to other websites, send to other people, etc. Once you post something, what happens to it is out of your hands. Make sure you be careful with what you post.
  • Face and voice can reveal a lot about you. They can reveal age, agab, in some cases they can be used to determine where you live (accents anyone?) be careful.

Please kids on the internet, BE SAFE. Remember these are strangers. Remember the internet is full of real people with their own motives and intentions. Remember that you can’t control the internet. Please please PLEASE be safe!

One thing I don’t really see being talked about is how when you’re depressed for a while, and start to get better, you don’t really want to. For me it’s difficult because I’m so used to being numb, and sad, and feeling horrible; when I don’t- I’m not used to it. I feel like I should be depressed. And it’s just a battle in my head. But I just have to keep on reminding myself that i don’t need to feel sad. I’m allowed to be happy. It’s okay to feel good about myself.

I don’t know if anyone else struggles with this, and if you do- just keep on fighting okay? It’s worth it. I promise.
