Reward Raffle - 1000 Followers!

First off, I just want to say WOW. Thank you so much! I never thought my little blog would result in such a following, especially as a writer. This means a lot to me, it really does, so I’d like to pay it back to you!

Rather than open general prompts, what I’d like to do is a raffle of sorts. Each person who reblogs this post will be entered into a drawing where I will write a 5-10k fic using their prompt idea. It can be something I’ve never written before or it can be from a story I’ve written that you want to see more of. It can be a gen fic or slash, doesn’t matter! Now, I do have a few guidelines for this, so be sure to read below the cut. For the drawing though, all you need to do is reblog this post and I’ll reach out to the winner via PM here.

The raffle is open until 11:59 pm US Pacific Time, October 15. I’ll reblog this myself a few times to make sure everyone has a chance to see it between now and next week.

Thank you again and good luck!!!

I know of something that can help! There’s an app on playstore called Character Story Planner that is amazing!

It lets you create characters, worlds, locations, describe items, scenes, whatever you want and it breaks them down in a billion little categories so you can put every little detail about it that you need.

For characters for example, you can put basic information, appearance, how they live, attitude, past, story, relationships, etc etc. For worlds it lets you plot the fauna, the flora, social classes, the cultural aspects down to the littlest details (currency, communications, transportation, art, business, economy, technology, etc), the political and religious systems and even how magic works in that world if it has magic. You can describe locations even in how they interact with the characters five senses and describe items and then link locations and items back to the stories they belong to.

What’s better, it lets you plan scenes out of order and then put the scene background, whose pov it’s by, ideas for dialogues etc and then you can link these scenes back to the stories or the locations where they happen and get an overview of all your scenes together in order. (There’s also a search bar so if you don’t remember where you put an information you can search for it)

And it’s a phone app so you can write whenever and wherever inspiration strikes and then it will convert things to pdf for you so you can send it to your e-mail or google drive. It’s honestly amazing, I’ve been using it for a long time and it’s so so so useful.

I don’t know if it’s available for apple products, but there’s probably some cool alternatives there too. There are other apps like this on android too, but to me this is the best.

And if you want something online there’s the Plot Factory, but the free version is very limited, that’s why I prefer the phone apps that are free and amazing and you can just send things to your computer later either way.

look, im just a slut for some magical exhaustion okay give me your whumpees overusing their magic and having physical repercussions from it, bloody noses, unable to stand, getting progressively weaker, utterly exhausted and spent !!

bonus points:  if they know they are running low on magic but they have no choice but to keep using more until they just collapse

bonus bonus points: if their magic is somehow connected to their life force!!

Okay guys hear me out.

A soulmate AU where you have a black stain where your soulmate is supposed to touch you for the first time and it turns to millions of colors once they do.

Like, so many people with their right palms all black, waiting for that one handshake.

People who have black knuckles who are scared for years that they end up punching their soulmate or something and end up coming home with their knuckles turned all shades of red and blue and purple without them noticing because sometimes your hands just brush together.

Someone having a very visible black palm on their cheek that they try to cover up because people will just know they will be slapped one day.

Just

consider the possibilities.

a handprint on your upper arm that bursts into colors during a fight you’re having with a close friend because you tried to walk away and they grabbed you–you never noticed that you never touched them until right now twin handprints on your chest because your soulmate happens to be the paramedic who steps in to give you chest compressions that one time you almost died a handprint on your palm but it’s not upside down like a handshake would be, you’re puzzled until you give someone a high five and the colors appear someone you just met brushes a leaf off your shirt–RIGHT WHERE YOUR HANDPRINT IS YOU ALWAYS WONDERED WHY IT WAS ON YOUR PEC

I actually love this one a lot

Someone who is born with no mark at all–what a tragedy! But one day, a dear friend offers to braid their hair. They’re not even half done before they gasp and let it drop–their black palms and fingers are afire with color–

–and so is the half-done plait, bright against solid black hair.

A small list of random ass sites I’ve found useful when writing:

  • Fragrantica: perfume enthusiast site that has a long list of scents. v helpful when you’re writing your guilty pleasure abo fics
  • Just One Cookbook: recipe site that centers on Japanese cuisine. Lots of different recipes to browse, plenty of inspiration so you’re not just “ramen and sushi”
  • This comparing heights page: gives you a visual on height differences between characters
  • A page on the colors of bruises+healing stages: well just that. there you go. describe your bruises properly
  • McCormick Science Institute: yes this is a real thing. the site shows off research on spices and gives the history on them. be historically accurate or just indulge in mindless fascination. boost your restaurant au with it
  • A Glossary of Astronomy Terms: to pepper in that sweet terminology for your astrophysics major college au needs

Adding to this since I’m working on a shifter au one-shot:

More:

  • Cocktail Flow: a site with a variety of cocktails that’s pretty easy to navigate and offers photos of the drinks. You can sort by themes, strengths, type and base. My only real annoyance with this site is that the drinks are sometimes sorted into ~masculine~ and ~feminine~ but ehhhh. It’s great otherwise.
  • Tie-A-Tie: a site centered around ties, obviously. I stumbled upon it while researching tie fabrics but there’s a lot more to look at. It offers insight into dress code for events, tells you how to tie your ties, and has a section on the often forgotten about tie accessories

why is there no electricity after the apocalypse?

something people writing post-apocalyptic fiction always seem to forget is how extremely easy basic 20th century technology is to achieve if you have a high school education (or the equivalent books from an abandoned library), a few tools (of the type that take 20 years to rust away even if left out in the elements), and the kind of metal scrap you can strip out of a trashed building.

if you want an 18th century tech level, you really need to somehow explain the total failure of humanity as a whole to rebuild their basic tech infrastructure in the decade after your apocalypse event.

i am not a scientist or an engineer, i’m just a house husband with about the level of tech know-how it takes to troubleshoot a lawn mower engine, but i could set up a series of wind turbines and storage batteries for a survivor compound with a few weeks of trial and error out of the stuff my neighbors could loot from the wreckage of the menards out on highway 3. hell, chances are the menards has a couple roof turbines in stock right now. or you could retrofit some from ceiling fans; electric motors and electric generators are the same thing, basically.

radio is garage-tinkering level tech too. so are electric/mechanical medical devices like ventilators and blood pressure cuffs. internal combustion’s trickiest engineering challenge is maintaining your seals without a good source of replacement parts, so after a few years you’re going to be experimenting with o-rings cut out of hot water bottles, but fuel is nbd. you can use alcohol. you can make bio diesel in your back yard. you can use left-over cooking oil, ffs.

what i’m saying is, we really have to stop doing the thing where after the meteor/zombies/alien invasion/whatever everyone is suddenly doing ‘little house on the prairie’ cosplay. unless every bit of metal or every bit of knowlege is somehow erased, folks are going to get set back to 1950 at the most. and you need to account somehow for stopping them from rebuilding the modern world, because that’s going to be a lot of people’s main life goal from the moment the apocalypse lets them have a minute to breathe.

nobody who remembers flush toilets will ever be content with living the medieval life, is what i’m saying. let’s stop writing the No Tech World scenario.

the thing *I* get mad about is no one goes and fixes up any of the hundreds of thousands of airplanes lying around, or even puts together any new ones. like the big fucking stumbling block for all those thousands of years for humans seemed to just be no one managed to combine the idea for a propeller with an engine that would spin it fast enough. but now the genie is thoroughly out of the bottle: drawings of planes have the propeller on it. we will remember that the secret to airplanes is smallish airfoil wings and a very very fast propellor (or three) for a thousand years, until all the books and drawings and planes themselves have decayed away.

like yeah you couldn’t make commercial jetliners in your garage, but if you camped out in an old airfield, you could probably bang together some kind of working franken-cessna.

YES. i’m not sure what kind of manufacturing base you need for long-distance passenger aircraft to be reliable, but you’re at least able to get the plane from casablanca off the ground with the tools you find in a bus garage.

oh, and guns! for god’s sake, guns are a 16th century technology!

man, i just recently read a post-apoc novel where firearms were mostly a lost art, and i’m like. my dude. my writer dude. i love you but you’ve never talked to someone who doesn’t live in a large urban center have you. thousands of target shooters make their own reloads to save money, so they can spend an hour at the range without going broke. every serious hunter can do maintenance on their own guns and most have made their own shotgun cartridges at least on occasion. the people least affected by any apocalypse scenario – the rural folks who bag a caribou or a couple whitetails every fall so their kids can have some protein in their diet – are the ones most qualified to maintain firearms and make ammunition.

you could maybe justify folks going back to black powder after a few decades, because gun cotton’s a bit of a chemical process – doesn’t have to be an industrialized one, but you don’t want to make it in your kitchen – but no firearms at all? or people fighting over the dwindling supply of ammunition? that’s dumb.
