work was going well. there might not have been as many clients here, but magnus was also fairly certain there wasn’t as much competition. not to mention he had found he could work more openly, offering magic to regular humans where he could. it made him a little nervous, just more people who could hate him for what he was, but he never let those concerns show. instead he was out, enjoying being recently paid with two new pieces of jewelry on his body and a glint in his eye. he took a seat at the bar before quickly turning to the person next to him quickly. he had never been very good without company. “let me treat you to a drink. whatever you’re getting next is on me.” it was a little nicer than he’d usually be around strangers, but he’d need some friends fast if he wasn’t going to let what he was trying to think of as an impromptu vacation get horribly lonely.

“damn it.” mai muttered, looking at her hand. all it took was one slip up, one moment of forgetting and reaching up to wipe her sweat and all of a sudden half of her makeup was smudged. it was particularly annoying given how long it took to put all of it on, but now, besides the wasted time, she was also potentially stuck outside looking like an idiot until she could find somewhere to wipe it off or redo it. hearing someone nearby she turned slightly to look towards them. “please tell me you have a makeup wipe and can save my life, or at least like, a napkin.” 

being on the beach was a little nostalgic, in a way that was both good and bad. it was the last time she’d been happy with her friends, and now one of them was fighting against the fire nation while the other was in jail and mai was just, well here. she kept the thought out of her mind, doing her best to just lounge and not get sand in her clothes when a shadow fell half over her face. “if you’re going to just stand there the least you could do it take one more step and completely block the sun you know. be a little helpful.”

“welcome.” mai drawled, hearing the bell to the flower shop as the door opened. technically she had an official welcome she was supposed to give, but it was cheesy and she absolutely refused. “are you going to need help with something or do you plan on just walking around and thinking about how you should get a plant before walking out?” she asked bluntly. those customers were common, and really not that bad cause it meant she got to keep herself seated comfortably behind the counter.

“i mean, i wasn’t meaning to act like you weren’t armed. it’s more, i didn’t want to accidentally hurt you because i got startled and reacted before thinking.” she admitted to mai. jaina needed to be careful with what she did, the pull to the dark side was stirring in her. she didn’t want to hurt anyone that was innocent and fall closer and closer to the sith, she knew that she couldn’t. even though she knew it could make things easier for her.

“cute.” mai deadpanned. “but i would have managed a dodge.” she would have been pissed about it though. the nicest thing about being here was being away from the war after all. she did not want to be attacked out of the blue. but explaining that was giving away too much, and mai kept it to herself. “what are you doing with that thing anyway?” she drawled, half curious. it wasn’t a weapon she had ever seen before but it wasn’t hard to guess how it would work. “practicing to actually hit someone?”

work at the bookstore was usually quiet. they were popular enough to stay open of course, but it was never exactly bustling. still, astoria had been rushing a little today, the unfortunate result of the one other person on her shift calling out sick. she sighed, looking at the collection of books that had just been lying around, taking a quick glance around the shop before pulling out her wand. she didn’t use magic as often these days but she was still confident as she muttered the spell under her breath, watching the books fly back to their appropriate spots. she had only just finished the spell when she heard someone at the door. astoria tensed. while magic was slightly more open here than it had been at home she still definitely made a mistake. maybe they hadn’t seen. she popped up from the shelves, a slightly tense smile on her face as she tried to play it off. “welcome! how can i help you?”

“would you like one?” astoria asked, holding out one of the individually wrapped treats. she had acquired a small pile next to her at this point. she wasn’t even sure what she had initially gone out to do, as she had gotten distracted by the sweets shop. “i know they’re pretty much old woman candy, but i find those are the best, everyone else just refuses to admit it.” and, typically offering some sort of candy tended to go well for socializing, which was good considering how she tended to struggle with that sort of thing. 

she was tired. that was more common these days. too long of a walk could absolutely drain astoria on a bad day, which was a shame given her desire to explore her new home. still, she figured she’d gotten lucky, tiring out around the market place where she’d at least been able to grab a tea before finding a bench to sit. she had been taking her break, sips of the tea making her feel the tiniest bit homesick, something she hadn’t even thought was possible, but otherwise it was just nice, when she noticed someone else standing around nearby. “you’re welcome to the rest of the bench if you’d like.” she said, scooting slightly so she was completely on one half of it. “i’d offer you the whole thing, but i’ll probably be here for a little while longer.”
