It was good for a while, being empty. I didn’t hurt anymore. But as time went on, it was like I could hear myself from far away, begging for permission to come back.

Daily Writing Challenge May 25th 2023 – Day 5 – Miracle/Tension

Daily Writing Challenge May 25th 2023 – Day 5 – Miracle/Tension

Andivia sighed. She hadn’t meant to, it just sort of came out.

She was sitting at the island in Camliri’s kitchen, drinking some peach iced tea, and watching hers and Cam’s kids play in the pool. Cam’s cat, Lily, lounged in the shade of a brightly colored umbrella, occasionally opening her eyes to look at the kids, like they had disturbed her beauty rest. There was no sign of Dennis the Demon Dog, or Mal, today.

The Arcanist eyed her friend warily, one long, slender brow arched. Andi caught the look and shook her head.

“What?” she demanded, maybe a little more harshly than she intended. Cam held up her hands and did her best to look innocent.

“Nothing, I was just thinking that you look… good. You look healthy and more alive than the last time I saw you. How have you been doing?” Andi frowned a bit.

Truth be told, she hadn’t been doing well the last few years, but things were starting to look up, at least she thought they were. She had gone back to her spot at the Shielded Mind clinic and began seeing patients there again. There was a baby boom going on, and lots of new babies meant lots of new business for her specialty; pediatrics. On the days she wasn’t working there, she had resumed baking food for the orphanages, mending and making clothing and toys for them, and was even thinking about doing a fundraiser for care boxes to send to those fighting the Incarnates over on the Dragon Isles.

“I feel…” she hesitated, trying to put into words just how she felt. “I feel kind of alive again, like the rut I had been in has finally passed, and my life has meaning again.” She gave Cam a weak smile and sipped more iced tea.

“Andi, your life has always had meaning. You are one of the most genuinely good and caring people I know. I mean, I don’t know anyone else that would care about, and take care of, their ex the way you do. Or all of the kids that you help through your practice and work with orphanages. You are good, you are kind, and you are wonderful, and I think everyone except for you knows that.”

Andi huffed out a laugh, blinking back tears in her bright blue eyes. She had to take another drink of tea to help swallow the lump in her throat. Still, she couldn’t keep the tears from slipping out and trailing down her cheeks, which were fuller and full of more color than this time last year. She did manage to not sob, though, and she thought that was a win.

Cam came around the island and put her arm around Andi’s shoulders. Still a bit too frail, Cam thought, but getting better. Hugging the Priestess tightly, she said against Andi’s sunny blonde hair.

“Go ahead, hon, let it out. It’s okay, this is a safe space, always.”

The tension seemed to melt from Andi’s shoulders and she wrapped her arms around Cam’s waist and let her friend hold her while cried; hot, burning, angry, hopeless tears for the years she had let slip by in a daze, in a fog, burying her emotions so deep inside she was afraid she had pushed everyone she loved away. Tears for the years she had felt so alone, when she wasn’t really. Tears for the bitterness she had felt for even her dearest friend because Cam had a life that Andi wanted. Tears for the relationships she had actually ran from, from the ones that could have been that she hid from, but, most importantly, tears for the ones that were still there; Cam, Andaeros, and his awful puns that she couldn’t help but grin at, Dicenne, who always had a smile for her, Ryland, and his cheeky grin when she saw him, Leomar, and his quiet nods when they sat together in Cam’s living room by a fire in the winter, Mal, who loved to ruffle her hair and tease her about smiting him. For Felon, and his love of their children. And even for Red, who, although he was an ass so, so much of the time, he never failed to be around, just when she needed a reality check. Kalen and Tobin, the terrible twosome who would never, ever leave her alone, even if she begged them.

And, when she thought about it, there were a slew of others that had always been in her life, had been a constant, even when she was floating in that sea of bitter loneliness.

It was a miracle that she still had any friends at all. She hadn’t been a very good friend to any of them as of late, but she intended on fixing that. She wanted to be with her friends, with her people, with the ones that had become family to her.

She wasn’t sure what had changed, but one day, something inside just… cracked. And instead of the usual hurt, the usual anger and bitterness, the usual fog, there was hope.

Hope of the life she had wanted, and still did. Hope that she wasn’t too far gone to live that life. Hope that her friends were still there, still wanted to be there.

And it felt good to hope. To have something to look forward to when she awoke, and the dreams of the future when she slept. She was ready to embrace that hope, and her life again.

After all, her last name was ‘Hopebringer,’ it was high time she lived up to it.

What does she hate the most about being a mother?

Avatar

That people assume her whole life revolves around the twins. Yes, a lot of her life does, but they're teenagers now, with their own groups of friends, their own interests, their own hobbies, and they don't need Mom looking over their shoulder anymore. Andi feels like she lost a lot of herself when she became a mother, instead of being recognized as a good doctor, the organizer of charity events, a baker, or a seamstress, it became "Andi, the mom of Annie and Caleb, and, oh yeah, she's a doctor too."

Thankful for a day of sunshine with quiet peaceful moments, explorations through tiny country lanes, evening bike rides and as always, a bit of foliage gathering. 🌿

Daily Writing Challenge - Day 4 - November 23rd 2022 - Children/Vision

“It’s just really sad,” Andivia said, before giving a small shrug of one shoulder.

The doctor had been holding a file folder in her hand, and was getting ready to file it away with the others when Camliri came in, asking if she wanted to have dinner. Before she knew it, Andi was telling Cam about a little boy that was her patient. Or, well, previous patient, to be exact. The quiet Priestess rarely talked about her patients outside of work, but Cam had come to The Shielded Mind, and Andi was in a particularly chatty mood that day.

The boy, only eighteen months old, had become an orphan on the day of his birth. His mother died just a few hours after he was born, his dad had been killed in The Maw in the Shadowlands. He tugged at Andi’s heartstrings because he reminded her so much of her best friend’s children; he had bright eyes, freckles across his pudgy cheeks, and shock of fiery red hair, as did Camliri’s two youngest kids.

“Wait, so, what’s going to happen to him now? You said his great-aunt was taking care of him, but there seems to be more to the story. Spill it, AJ.” Cam insisted, using Andi’s childhood nickname.

The Priestess sighed and rolled her eyes. She and Cam both had a soft spot for children, especially children in need. Camliri’s eldest daughter, Raena, was adopted. The blonde haired girl left orphaned after her mother and father died during the Cataclysm. Cam had adopted her after little Raena had captured her heart during a visit to the orphanage in Orgrimmar. Although not red haired, Rae was just as fiery and smart as her adoptive mother, and they both doted on Cam’s younger two, Maelyn and Dristan.

“Well, I’m assuming he’ll go to one of the orphanages. The great-aunt was quite old, and it was really her staff that was taking care of him. But she passed last week, and, come to find out, she owed more money than her estate was bringing in, so there’s none left to care for him.”

She shook her head and took a sip of her honey mint tea. And then she saw the look on Camliri’s face. She knew that look; something was brewing in that brain of hers, Andi could tell. She carefully set her tea cup down, and stared at her friend, waiting for the inevitable. Having been Cam’s friend since they were young, Andivia knew when her friend was hatching some grand scheme in her mind.

“What if… And hear me out, what if I adopted him? I mean, I obviously have the means,” which was a massive understatement, Cam was loaded. “And, Dristan has been asking for a baby brother. Now, I don’t know if I can have children naturally anymore, and I haven’t really looked into it, if I’m being honest, but, we’ve had all these years of peace, and maybe it’s just time to expand my family. I mean, I always had visions of having a large family, so why not do it?” The red head smiled broadly, she’d clearly already made up her mind.

“Didn’t you just adopt a dog? Like… one of those demon dog things?” Andi’s nose scrunched up at the thought, but one of Cam’s partners was a Demon Hunter, so she just assumed it was natural that he would have… something like that.

“Dennis? Yeah, he’s great. Except he slobbers a lot.” The Arcanist waved her hand and retrieved her coffee cup from where it was hovering in the air near her.

“You named a demon dog DENNIS?!” Andi looked positively shocked. She wasn’t sure why she was, her friend had a habit of naming her pets weird things. She’d once had a rabbit named Four Lucky. As in ‘four lucky rabbit’s feet’. Cam looked un-phased.

“Yeah, why? What’s wrong with Dennis? It’s a perfectly reasonable name,” she said blandly. She shrugged and sipped more coffee. She had had this argument with Mal too. Dennis was a fine name for a dog. Andi laughed and shook her head, blonde bangs falling into her eyes.

“Incredible,” was all she could say.

“C’mon AJ, give me the details. What’s the boy’s name? And who is his social worker? I can have my lawyer here in a snap.” And from the look on her face, she was serious, which sobered Andi up.

“Just like that? You’ve only seen one picture of him, and you’re going to adopt him? What are the guys going to say?” The Priestess couldn’t imagine just adopting a kid just out of nowhere.

“Let’s see, Mal likes kids, Leo likes kids, and Ryland doesn’t stay at the estate long enough to really have to deal with the kids, unless he runs into Rae in the kitchen or something. I had kids before I had any of them in my life, and I’ll still have my kids if any of them chose to leave my life. I love children, I want to be able to give this one the care and stability he deserves. He’ll fit right in. And I’ll be the one taking care of him. If any of the guys want to help, that’s cool. If they don’t, that’s cool too. Although… Ryland would make some cute babies.” Cam sighed, her eyes going a bit distant as she thought about that. Then she cleared her throat and sat up straighter.

“So c’mon, what’s his name and where can I find him?”

“His name?” Andivia asks. “It’s Dennis.” Cam snorted and threw a balled up napkin at Andi.
