as thanks for his flowers, she gets him a bouquet of gardenias, stems tied together with a pale pink ribbon

                    “Oh, hey—”

One Island was awash in red for a good three-fourths of the year. Crimson hibiscus petals positively coated the first couple islands in the Sevii archipelago. It was thanks to the area’s ever-temperate climate, the sun’s blessings of warmth, the ocean’s sweet breeze, Mt. Ember’s overly-fertile Moltres-touched ash fertilising the soil twentyfold. His home on Kindle Road was practically overtaken with all the flowers in mid-October ( it was in fact how Kindle Road had gotten its name; all the hibiscus flowers blooming up and down the route gave it an appearance akin to a raging fire whenever the wind happened to stir them up in just the right way ), but none of them were white. The colourless gardenias that Luka handed off to him were so pale they almost appeared to have been scrubbed free of any colour at all, their tips faintly translucent, their petals so delicate that the light glinting off the rose ribbon she’d bound them in reflected off their undersides.

They were both beautiful and unexpected. Celio smiled at them and then at her, his fingertips brushing past her palms as he took the flowers into his hands.

"Are these for me?? You really didn’t have to get me anything — they’re beautiful, though!! I’ll put them in a vase by my main workstation so I can see them often. What’s the occasion??

❛ oh- hopps! luka’s hand retracted instinctively when the little pokemon leaped from the bag, but a moment later and she lunged forwards, snagging hopps awkwardly with her free arm. she wasn’t sure how much free reign celio gave his pokemon, but she couldn’t very well risk the possibility that a strong gust might carry away his beloved companion forever. at least it didn’t seem like hopps minded being held; she was snuggled quite placidly in the crook of luka’s arm, soft green leaves tickling the bottom of her chin and grazing her cheeks.
they rounded a bend, and the rest of the park splayed out before them- a slightly overgrown lawn framed by a grove of flowering trees, with a small playscape and swing-set that were clearly well-worn but still charming ( at least, luka certainly thought so! ) nonetheless. beyond the play area the lawn gave way to a garden, where the first blossoms of spring dotted the landscape with splashes of color. there was a reason luka kept coming to the same park whenever she was in the region, and sentimentality was only part of it- it really was a lovely place to spend time in, and to their luck it seemed to be empty!

❛ ah…i’m actually gonna have to disagree with you there. i don’t really think it’s a favor at all! i mean…like, by saying it’s a favor, isn’t it kind of implying that you’re inconveniencing me? but you’re not! i can’t think of anywhere else i’d rather be, or anyone else i’d rather be with. i-  she paused for a moment, sweet unspoken words weighing down on her tongue like a strawberry candy. i mean, i’d like to see you more too, and any time i get to see you is wonderful, but the fact that you’re here on white day…well, it’s a little more special, i think. kind of romantic, you know? ❜
her steps seemed to quicken in pace after that, but there was no hiding the rose-colored tint to her cheeks, a flush that refused to fade…she was really being too forward today, wasn’t she? chalk it up to the spirit of the holiday; this was one usually celebrated by couples, after all, so wasn’t it fine that her heart was beating a little faster than normal?
❛ um, so…this place is really charming, don’t you think? and the swings- they’re empty, so let’s play around a little! already her feet were carrying her in that direction, every footfall a little faster until she was practically running towards them, skirt flouncing with every step and eyes shining with unmistakable excitement.

He was inconveniencing her though, wasn’t he? Even if she failed to admit it --- no, even if she was simply too kind to even recognise it properly herself --- time was valuable and willingly spending so much time with him in lieu of spending it with someone more substantial, more worth her time was a fine waste of a precious, unpurchasable commodity. All he’d really had to have done was send her her White Day things in the post and be done with it; the fact that he’d come to deliver them to her in person spoke only to how difficult she was to track down to a reliable P.O. box and how willing he was to spend his own time chasing down a bit of company. The knowledge was nothing that put him down. If anything it lifted his spirits exponentially; to be willing to take up practically an entire day just humouring him meant that she at least had to value him enough not to want to hurt his feelings, though he was self aware enough to assume that she sincerely wasn’t acting out of any pity ( even if he had, in retrospect, kind of made it near-impossible to actually turn him down after he’d gone and travelled all the way from Sevii just to see her ). Perhaps that was why he’d gone so far as to travel to an entirely different region just to see her face to face: he held enough faith in Luka’s kindness to truly believe that she saw him as a friend, and the knowledge of someone else --- of anyone else --- caring for him at all warmed his heart.

Was that selfish? It sounded awfully selfish.

Luka was sweet, and he likened the words that hung off her tongue to the holiday confectionary colouring the storefronts on the way to the park. Even her choice in wording ( likening anything involving him to romance, of all things! ) was practically dripping with honey. It was all he could do not to laugh outright as he quickened his pace to meet her at the playscape, his long, thin legs bending so that he could hook his knee against the pliable leather seat of the swing to rock back and forth a few times in comfort without needing to break eye contact.

"Does it being White Day really change the atmosphere that much?? I’m sorry if it felt like I was trying to pull some moves on you or anything --- it’s only proper etiquette to reciprocate a gift down the road, and with all the work you put into my Valentines’ Day one I really wanted to at least make sure you got yours on the right day. Although,”

Image

"if you felt like you wanted to play with the holiday theme more, that’s fine with me!! We’ll just say we’re on a date in the park instead of just hanging out. Would it be more romantic if I pushed you on the swings a bit?? That’s the sort of stunt they always pull in movies, right??

Blind Date Disaster

“Oh it’s practical, sure … But the shirt’s a little too big and the pants look a bit worn.” Speaking of, he takes a moment to fix the other man’s collar while he’s listening, head tilted ever so slightly like he was a curious Poochyena instead of a gym leader. “To live where you do … It sounds so peaceful. Nothing like these big cities full of people and mistakes and drinks and … well, that’s enough of that. The haircut should only take a few minutes at best. Listen - Mon cher, you don’t look bad, but you certainly don’t know how to dress for that body type. Which! Is why! You’re lucky I’m your date.” Beaming at poor Celio, he pushes the computer nerd into a nearby boutique, waving to the owner – And they soon begin to converse in very rapid Kalosian.

“Do not worry, my darling! You will be in good hands. This woman is my maman’s friend who moved to Hoenn long before we did, and she knows just what to do with all this cute hair of yours. I ‘ope you don’t mind and don’t worry for expenses, I’m paying for everything today. O~kay?” Finally letting go of Celio’s hand, he’s motioned to a chair by a middle aged woman with greying black hair, smiling sweetly at him as she puts her hair cutting apron on. It smells of hair products and someone had gotten a perm recently, so that scent was also lingering in the air.
“I’ll wait right here so you don’t feel alone, oui?”

Peaceful? It was certainly much quieter than he imagined living in the likes of Kanto or Hoenn could possibly be; each island’s population within the Sevii archipelago was simply too small for there to be much noise or racket dealt by neighbours, and the lack of roads or large scale stores typically meant an absence of bustling commerce. Beyond tourists combing the beaches and the hot springs during the warmer months One Island was for the most part deserted save for its meagre population, but that, he felt, brought with it a unique sort of hustle and bustle. City-dwellers would never have the experience of waking up to a Rapidash sticking its head in through the window, for instance, nor the sight of Moltres’s fire glinting against the night sky as it went off soaring high above Mt. Ember. He would never know what it would be like to complain about noisy neighbours just as they would never know what it was like to watch Slugma and Macargo scorch trails through ash-laden grasslands on the way home from work.

Maybe it would have done him better to have picked out a shirt that wasn’t singed on the sleeves from said ash. Too late now. Celio ducked his head and took his seat despite the clear confusion on his face, his eyes darting from the older woman beaming down at him up to Wallace and then back to her ( to her scissors, more accurately ).

"I can --- I can afford whatever it is a haircut and clothes costs, you know. I mean, any trainer that’s ever traded Pokémon through the GTS or with someone out-of-region has used my code, so I’m... I do okay for myself there. I get that you think my clothes are bad, but do I seriously need a haircut, too?? I haven’t gotten someone else to cut my hair since... I can’t even remember the last time. Is it really that bad??

What's Celio's fashion sense like?

The quick answer is totally abysmal!!
In all seriousness it’s not like it can’t get any worse; he always makes sure that nothing he wears has any stains or dirt on them, that there aren’t any wrinkles, that he’s clean-pressed and presentable, he just isn’t fashionable. Celio’s success as a programmer might mean that he’s very wealthy, but Sevii isn’t exactly in the loop. It’s a poor ‘region’, poor not in that the residents are impoverished but in that mainland Kanto neglects the archipelago hard in favour of focusing on its big cities and Sevii likes to keep itself closed-off and secluded. There are no paved roads, no large stores or convenience stores or shops, the grandest markets are little bazaars put together by neighbours and the bulk of the archipelago seems either to be in a literal state of ruin ( of the ancient variety; anthropologists and archeologists must have a field day there ) or kept up as some sort of nature conservation effort by Pokémon Rangers on-location trying to protect all the rare, exotic Pokémon that call the island chain home. People from Sevii are called out in-game by people from Kanto as being backwards and too old fashioned, but in reality their interests simply lay elsewhere.
There are no boutiques in the archipelago, so buying clothes means snagging a boat all the way to Lilycove to shop at the department store unless you’re willing to wait for something to get shipped over to the docks in Sevii. To save himself the effort Celio just buys in bulk and keeps clothes on-hand tucked away in various spots in his house; he doesn’t bother getting anything fancy because he knows that living on a highly volcanic island full of very rowdy Fire-types with a resident legendary Pokémon resting atop Mt. Ember means lots of singed, burnt or otherwise ruined ensembles, so he mostly just wears button-downs ( with long sleeves, always; he rolls them up sometimes when he’s indoors but occasional falling ash singes the skin, and he likes to keep covered up to avoid it ) and thick, high-waisted jeans for practicality while scaling rocks and grasslands, because getting to and from home is a literal hike through the unpaved, untouched Kindle Road. His shoes are the only part of his outfit that he’d agree need an upgrade; he always wears sneakers for practical reasons, but with how rough the terrain is and how he tends to wear the same pair forever until he buys a new pair of shoes they’re really beaten up. His glasses are chipped at the edge and a bit crooked, but wherever it seems it might break he simply tapes them up. Practicality over aesthetic goes a long way for him.
