I firmly believe that unless the couple has discussed and agreed to marriage ahead of time, nobody has any business making a surprise public proposal.

Okay except some people want a surprise public proposal.

Girl my husband took me to Spain and gave me a kinder egg on the beach, the ring was inside the capsule (Lord knows how he did that) if any feminist tried to take that away from me I may cut a bitch. Best surprise of my life.

I wish people were capable of analyzing larger social trends and figuring that a significant number of women end up getting pressured into engagements or marriages they don’t want bc the audience that comes along with a public proposal will think she’s a bitch if she says no - instead of thinking “i liked it when it happened to me, therefore it could never turn out badly for anyone, not ever!!!!”

I think what people are misunderstanding here is that agreeing to marriage ahead of time doesn’t need to be like, asking permission to propose? I surprised my now spouse with a proposal in Disneyland but before that we had several conversations about the future of our relationship, future plans for our retirements and how we’d have to get married eventually for immigration purposes. I didn’t go to her and say “so would you say yeah if I proposed?” or hash out deets ahead of time, but we had enough of a mutual understanding and communicated desire to get married that, although it was a surprise for when and how I proposed, it wasn’t out of left field at all.

This is exactly like conversations about consent, people get up in arms thinking that it means you have to have contracts and serious sit down conversations before doing anything when its REALLY EASY to simply COMMUNICATE with your partner so things like this are done properly, yeesh

“proposal can be a surprise, engagement shouldn’t be“ - saw that somewhere, thought it was the most accurate

!!!!!!!!!!!!! proposal can be a surprise, engagement shouldn’t be !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

me: the reading of literature is a highly subjective experience and differing interpretations of texts are not only entirely valid but also provide fascinating input into the reader’s own social context and psyche, thus ensuring that literature remains powerful and relevant as time goes on
someone: *doesn’t interpret my favourite book the way I do*
me: okay you fucker you wanna play this game? here’s a ten page paper with textual evidence showing every little way that you are wrong

Having no sources of intimacy in your daily life and therefore resorting to learning as much as you can as a way to pass the time is such a sad cycle, every single day its like what can I become obsessively interested in this time to vaguely simulate companionship and a temporary sense of purpose that I know will eventually make me feel even more alone because even if I find meaning and enjoyment it is completely irrelevant to and isolated from everyone and everything else

Shit No One Told Me About My Period

I knew the basics before I got it, but I had no clue…

* The blood wouldn’t necessarily be red. When I first got my period, I spent a few min looking at my underwear wondering how I shit myself. I didn’t know the blood could look brown, or be thick.

* That tampons weren’t a good idea yet. I was 10 or 11 when I got my first period and physically smaller than an adult woman. My first attempt at inserting a tampon was very painful and unsuccessful. I wouldn’t use them until I was around 14 or so.

* That when you use pads the blood can get on your bottom and I’d have to occasionally clean off the toilet seat after using it.

* That getting your first period DOES NOT mean you’re fully developed and fully able to bear children. I could have technically gotten pregnant at that age, but I was still a child and pregnancy would have put my life in danger because I was still physically immature.

* That it wouldn’t be regular for another few years.

* That very painful cramping is NOT NORMAL once you reach your 20s and is cause for concern.

* That the blood and tissue you pass can look chunky or stringy and not like blood from a cut.

* That stress can halt your period for months BUT

* That doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant

Feel free to add your own

Relatable

*That not all pads/tampons are made equal, playtex (sport) and Always Infinity flex foam pads are the best

!!!! HEY YO IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT STRESS AND PERIODS STOPPING!!!!

GO and get a blood test if that happens. Stress can trigger it but it can also be a symptom of other issues you may be unaware of. you may have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and the ONLY REASON I found out that I had it was because of periods stopping due to stress.

PCOS is very manageable, but knowing if you have it is important. Not everyone who has it has the same collection of symptoms, and that is literally what it is: a syndrome is a collection of symptoms.

Overly painful periods or wildly irregular periods can also point to having this, and you do NOT want Cysts on your ovaries. Trust me. You are better off knowing and treating to prevent them.

Treatment is generally three things: low sugar diet (yeah good luck with this I still struggle with it), metformin (for those who are pre-diabetic and have blunt or ineffective insulin), and the pill. Exercise is also generally important for those with insulin issues as it has the same effect on the body as metformin.

SO MANY WOMEN have this issue and it is only now that doctors are learning how to spot it and treat it earlier. Often people think weight gain problems and male-pattern hair growth are the only real indicators, but the effects differ depending on genetics and there are plenty of very slim women with no male-pattern hair growth who also have it and have no idea.

If you think you might have it then GO. GET. TESTED!

OTHER THINGS NOT TOLD TO YOU ABOUT YOUR PERIOD BEFORE YOU HAVE IT:

- HOW FUCKING LONG IT LASTS. LITERALLY DIDN’T KNOW THAT UNTIL I GOT MY FIRST ONE AT 13 (I thought it was just a one to two day thing)

- SOMETIMES EXERCISING IN THE WEEK BEFORE YOUR PERIOD WILL GIVE YOU CRAMPS SO BAD YOU CAN’T MOVE. If you can push past them though you’re good to exercise for several hours without issue generally.

- YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY WEAR NIGHTTIME PADS ALL FUCKING DAY FUCK WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS

- YOU DON’T EVER HAVE TO USE TAMPONS IF YOU DON’T WANT TO

- PERIODS WILL OFTEN EITHER GIVE YOU THE RUNS OR CONSTIPATE YOU there’s too much going on down there during a period and sometimes your body will go ‘get every fucking thing out of me’ or ‘there’s too much i’m only doing one thing at a time and right now it aint poopin’.

- IF YOU’RE ALWAYS HAVING HEAVY PERIODS YOU’RE PROBABLY GOING TO NEED IRON SUPPLEMENTS. Also if they are always super fucking painful, you may not have PCOS but Endometriosis. Which is just as serious and also needs treatment.

- EVEN WITHOUT PCOS THE AMOUNT OF SUGAR YOU EAT CAN EFFECT YOUR PERIODS. If you binge on high sugar foods regularly, regardless of your weight, your insulin may not be able to cope with all of it. Many organs can deal with this OK, but Ovaries CANNOT. You may damage them, or stress them out, and this can be a factor in period irregularity.

Sugar in general can have a huge impact on your hormones and overall body chemistry and you definitely need to be careful about how much you eat. It’s less about what you weigh and more about how stressed out your pancreas gets. It can also cause more thrush problems if you are prone to outbreaks of it!

Periods can be an indicator of how well your body is coping in general with stress and your diet. I cannot tell you how annoying it was when I had to be HAPPY about getting my period because it meant my internals were doing okay.

THIS HAS BEEN A UTERUS HAVERS PSA.
