I'm Céline. A Dutch, 33 year old animator, hoping to one day make her own animated movie for the big screen! My interests (or obsessions) seem to change every few months

oh no spindlehorse is holding applications. Hoping anyone who applies/gets in doesn’t deal with Viv’s shit and has a good time there <3

Hey, some of them do! It's a crapshoot and I definitely wouldn't recommend it, but let's face it, non-awful animation studios are getting harder and harder to find.

Can't blame folks for applying because it's very tough getting a job now in the animation industry. I used to apply for HB as well, I actually got approached to do a cleanup test twice. First time I got ghosted, second time I declined because I was heavily pregnant at the time and had a deadline for a client who paid me very well!

But now, in good conscience I can't/won't apply anymore. No matter how tempting it is. Viv's done too much bad shit now.

i don't think a lot of people really understand what being on the receiving end of an online mass harassment campaign does to someone psychologically. it frequently causes ppl to lose their minds and kill or institutionalize themselves and get pushed into becoming reactive and lashing out. it is incredibly traumatizing. and yet i see ppl act dismissive about this all the time

Oh what's the tea with hazbin animation?

So this is a big point of contention with me because it’s not really just the animation that I had beef with. They clearly put their whole ass into the A shots and a lot of them were beautifully done but that consistency was sorely lacking and you could see a clear divide between the A/senior shots and the junior shots as a result. There was also a lot of choppy animation that didn’t feel intentional.

This problem was exacerbated by the composition and framing of some of the shots. A lot of the time the editing was not good, and cuts were unmotivated or sloppy. Also there would be cuts that had the same character and inbetween shots the characters model would change drastically. (A good example of this that immediately comes to mind for me is in the hells greatest dad song there is a bit where Alastair is playing the piano and it cuts to a different angle and all of a sudden he’s like 2 feet taller and his arms are longer and he’s in a completely different position. This shit is so noticeable.)

Also when it comes to editing, this show has a major problem with its camera. It won’t stay the fuck still. I thought I was gunna throw up from motion sickness half the time.

You can blame a lot the animation problems on the designs of the character or budget/time constraints. Almost every animator friend I have thinks this show is ugly and the animation is hard to watch at points. I only gave it a chance because I liked the music and I’m a huge fan of musicals. I also think that even if you don’t like the show (don’t discourse with me I will start blocking people) that it is a big W for the animation industry right now. The industry is a flaming dumpster fire and this is kind of a highlight of success. Sorry to ramble.

My animation process (in a GIF!)

So you've learned the 12 principles of animation but don't know where to actually apply them? Fear not!! For here is my step-by-step process, very very condensed, into one singular giant GIF.

Hope it helps!

Extremely Important Update: in April 2023 the World Bird Sanctuary had an orphaned eagle chick in need of care, so they decided to see if Murphy could live up to his parental ambitions.

He successfully raised the chick, which is now thriving with the other juvenile eaglets!

Congrats Murphy, you made it happen through sheer determination.

(Pictures are from the Facebook page of the World Bird Sanctuary; I can’t link them directly because I don’t have a FB account and the site is a nightmare to interact with if you’re not logged in, constantly resetting and kicking you to registration pages.)

So I have 2 projects that feature dragons and wyverns in them. One project, which is just called the Dragon Project for now, features multiple species of dragons and wyverns of different elements. I’ve shared these dragons before in the past.

Whilst my other project, titled Old But New, Only has 1 species of both dragon and wyvern. And I decided to draw a comparison between the 2. Normally I would argue that wyverns are dragons but in this story they are not, they are their own separate thing.

So there's this pilot for an indie show called Space King, which is a parody and a riff at Warhammer 40K and the Warhammer 40K community, that was released yesterday and at the end where the creators are pitching the show they have a Helluva Boss imp persona in the middle of the screen in hell between the two creators and one of the creators says "there's plenty of independent animation targeted to mentally ill teenage girls".

I figure to let you know.

Thinking about how when my oldest brother took Japanese classes his professor was like your pronunciation is really good 😊 but you need to watch movies that aren't about the Yakuza because you sound like a criminal

somewhere in this beautiful world there is a man who sounds like Paulie Walnuts because he learned English by watching the Sopranos

Really in love with some of the notes on this post
