I find it extremely funny that the entire Good Omens fandom is absolutely in love with Bildad the Shuhite for seemingly no reason. Can one of you please tell me why we love him so?

It's like distilled Crowley before his walls have come up entirely. He's clearly considered his place in the world and made some decisions about the kind of person he wants to be and seems more or less comfortable in those lines he's drawn for himself. He's goofy and having fun, teasing people and taking delight in being a little bit of a shit when Aziraphale first shows up. He's... lighter generally than modern Crowley but not naive like the Starmaker either. He's maybe the most Balanced we've ever seen him. Then he for just a little, once it's clear to him that he's safe to be a little vulnerable, lets himself be. He lays out in front of someone who should be his enemy, talking openly about being on his own side more than Hell's. Then reassures that same supposed foe in his own way that things are okay like this and that they can be alone together. He's excellent and an excellent insight into the kind of person Crowley is both within his own context and also once he lets himself open up a little more. At least, that's some of what it is for me.

A few more reasons, some frivolous, others less so:

  1. Best costume in the entire series, both seasons, bar none. It's so layered and detailed and gorgeous. Stop gawping at the beard, y'all. Look at that CAFTAN. In closeup wherever possible -- a lot of the fabric texture and stitching detail gets lost in long shots (not that it doesn't still look good -- it very much does). If there's ever a Good Omens costume exhibition, Bildad's caftan NEEDS to be in it.
  2. His dance between "these are the rules" and "ain't no rule." He uses the bet documentation to justify his presence and talk Aziraphale down from instant smiteage. Then he "ain't no rule"s his way into rescuing kids of two species. (Yes, I know I owe a rules meta. I will get to it, promise.)
  3. His Captain Carrot Exact Words gambit against Aziraphale. The grim, deliberate delivery of his trick-with-the-truth is so perfect.
  4. His displays of raw fiery power. Dude is kinda scary taking down Job's villa tbh. I'm here for it.
  5. His raw honesty about where he stands vis-a-vis Hell. His hints to Job about how horrible She and Satan are. His independent-mindedness. Set yourself free, Bildad, and try to free others!
  6. His "yes, and" improv style. He miracles Sitis into naming him and just rolls with what she says. Aziraphale needs an obstetrician, he gets one. The angels need an ersatz Eve-like birth, he picks up the cues immediately and provides one.
  7. His refusal to hide from Her while She's talking to Job. Whether it's "what else can You possibly do to me?" or straight-up "do Your worst" defiance, it's brave. Sure, he had license to be there and do things, but the things were done already at that point. His welcome, especially standing next to an angel, is not what I would call assured.
  8. The way he backs off on the humor when it becomes clear to him that Aziraphale is deeply distressed about defying Her, and how gentle he is from that point on.

So yeah. Bildad's my guy.

I got this comment on a story from my Other AO3 Account this morning.

(Info redacted because I prefer keeping these accounts separate but no one follows me on the side blog I have for that account.)

The story was posted almost a year ago and is relatively β€œpopular” by my average statistics even though it has tropes and themes that are big turnoffs for a lot of people (hence separate accounts). This popularity is undoubtedly because it’s a Marvel Loki story and that fandom is massive.

So there is obviously an algorithm or a bot scrubbing ao3 statistics and leaving this comment on fics that meet a certain metric with the main character of the fic inserted into the comment.

I had a little time to kill this morning so I decided to investigate further. And y’all this is so predatory. Come on this journey with me. It made me mad. It may make you mad.

First, if you go to Webnovel’s website, you HAVE to choose between male lead or female lead stories before you can go any further. WTF?

And that’s weird, but this gets so much worse. This is basically a pay-to-read site that has different subscription models. Which… okay BUT! The authors don’t get paid! Look at that comment again. They’re promising a supportive and nurturing community, but zero monetary compensation. It’s basically, β€œpost your stuff here so we can get paid and you can get… nice vibes?” I mean look at this Orwellian writing:

Using the phrase β€œpay-to-read model” in the same sentence as β€œqualitative changes in lifestyles for authors” deliberately makes you think that you can get paid and maybe even make a living on this website. But that’s not actually what it says and authors will not receive one red cent.

Oh but wait, the worst is still to come. In case this breaks containment (which I kind of hope it does) this is where I mention that I’m a lawyer in the US.

I don’t do intellectual property or copyright law but I do read and write contracts for a living. So I went to look at their terms of service. It was fun!

Highlights the first, in which Webnovel gets a license to do basically whatever they want with content you post on their site. This is how they get to be paid for people reading authors’ writing without paying them anything.

Highlights the second, in which Webnovel takes no responsibility for illegally profiting off of fan fic. This all says that the writer is 100% responsible for everything the writer posts (even though only Webnovel is making money from it).

Highlights the third which say that by posting, the author is representing that they have the legal right to use and to let Webnovel use the content according to these terms. So if a writer posts fan fiction and Webnovel makes money from people reading the fan fiction, and the House of the Mouse catches wise, these sections say that that’s ALL on the writer.

So that’s a little skeevy to start off with but the thing that is seriously shitty and made me make this post was that these assholes are coming to ao3. They are actively recruiting people in comments on their fan fiction. And they are saying they are big fans of the character you’re writing about and that they share your interests.

They are recruiting fan fiction writers and giving every impression that you can make money from posting fan fiction on their site and hiding the fact that you absolutely cannot but they can make money off of you while you try, deep in their terms of service which no one but a lawyer who writes fan fic and has some time to kill will read.

I see posts on here regularly from people who don’t understand how this stuff works, don’t understand that they (and others) can not legally make a financial profit from fan fiction. And there are tons of people who will not take the time to dig into the details.

Don’t deal with these bastards. Fuck Webnovel.

This is very helpful considering I got the exact same comment yesterday. Fuck Webnovel is my sentiment after reading this too and it confirms my decision to just report that comment as spam to AO3

I got one of these, too, from a different username. I wasn’t even the author of this fic. I just did the art for it.

Wake up, Good Omens fandom! We're doing something special!

Ineffable May 10

May 10 is both what is often cited as the date the book published (in 1990) and it's the day St Dunstan in the East Church (Neil's inspiration for the scene) would've matched up with the episode 3 Blitz scene (1941).

Bring on your fan works set between '41 and '90!

New or already shared fan works alike, they cover nearly 50 years of Crowley and Aziraphale knowing the other would absolutely, without a doubt save them. That's 50 years of "you can't deny this feeling".

40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. There's so much you can do with those eras, for Aziraphale and Crowley, other angels and demons, and even many of the humans! Especially in bookverse.

Or do something AU and toss canon to the wind!

(I personally love that 1967, another Hard Times cold open scene year, is when London decided to turn the remains of the Blitz scene church INTO A GARDEN. Crowley definitely had something to do with that.)

You can use the tag for any Good Omens celebrations you have on May 10 but especially for showing those fan works set between 1941 (the Blitz scene!) and 1990 (when the book came out!)

AND HEY!

ANY HELP getting the word out is super. I am but a small fan with an even smaller reach. I want anyone who wants to participate to have a chance to hear about it! Thanks SO SO MUCH!

And speaking of thanks: THANK YOU @flantasticclaude for your enthusiasm for this sudden fandom event, and stepping in to make the above wonderful, rainbow-filled graphic to get the word out.πŸŒˆπŸ˜‡πŸ˜ˆ

Let's all have an amazing fandom celebration on May 10!

What if we do something for May 10? Since that's both what is often cited as the date the book published (in 1990) and it's the day St Dunstan in the East Church (Neil's inspiration for the scene) would've matched up with the Blitz scene (1941).

Fan works set between '41 and '90, anyone?

Because that's nearly 50 years of them both knowing the other would save them. That's 50 years of "you can't deny this feeling".

I love that 1967 (another Hard Times cold open scene year) is when London decided to turn it INTO A GARDEN.

What's a nice simple tag for it?

And again, my reach to find fellow fans who may be interested is extremely limited, so please share along if you like!
