A bus is basically the classic thing to wait in the rain for

There's like three groups of responses to this: recognising it as a Night Vale post, apologising for recognising it as a Night Vale post like that was not my intention when making the post, and not recognising it as a Night Vale post at all and making it about love or something which is possibly very sweet but only tells me they have never heard Still Late by Satellite High

Earlier today, talking about queer community security, I said, "Well, you know the saying about butches and bears," and the person I was talking to said "... no?"

So:

No "see answers" option, pick an answer or stay curious.

I don't have enough answers options to add location, so put your location stuff in tags & please reblog to satisfy my curiosity. Thank youuuuu.

Hey. Hey.

We don't need to do that. Saneist statements are not cool.

The idea that there is one single community - especially pre-internet - or that the community has one single history - is a poisonous thing. In reality, we have and have always had a multitude of smaller communities connected into a loose confederation. Part of the reason that I asked this question is to create connections between this online community and the RL community that I grew up in back in central PA in the 90s.

Yes, there is a lack of continuity between the past and now, and that's on purpose. Not only did we lose huge chunks of the generation before mine and of the earlier part of my generation, but part of the reason that it is so essential to the people who hate us to make queer adults terrified to talk to queer kids, or to each other, is to break part those links. They want us to lose our community, from something as small as this saying to the knowledge of how to do DIY HRT and on and on. They want us to go back to feeling lonely and alone the way that I felt when I was a kid. It's easier to tell us we're broken when we think we're the only ones.

The reason that fascists use the fasces as a symbol is because they know that together, they are strong, and broken apart, we are weak, less able to resist. So they try to break us apart.

Making comments like this? It doesn't help. We don't need to do that here, especially about something as regional and trivial as a saying. My G-d.

I couldn't complete the sentence on my own but I have heard the phrase before once or twice. I was absolutely aware of the principle.

On a somewhat related note, I was always told if you're at a queer event and you need help, find a drag queen.

In my local queer community, the drag queens (and kings) are often directly linked with event organisers and community groups.

So if you're lost or need help, they're a highly visible person you can turn to who probably knows who to contact, and what organisations and groups you can turn to for support.

That's very good advice!

To be clear, if the person I'd been talking to had known the principle but not the exact saying/rhyme, I would have counted that as "knowing."
