Licking Wounds

With the battle started, Laika’s smile vanish. A frown took it’s place as his grip on his PET tightened. This navi was enough, he reminded himself.
“Fire, Scout.” Laika all but whispered the command. “Then accompany volley.”
Scout executed it immediately, firing off a volley of bullets from the loaded Vulcan chip. It dash to the side immediately afterwards, faster than any movement Searchman had produced. And with it’s normal buster, fired off shots to join in the assault.
“Don’t misunderstand.” Laika addressed his foe. “While the championship was valued, it is nothing compared to the privilege of destroying Nebula and it’s scum.”

Rockman jumped, but still managed to be grazed by the volley. Bits of his side gave way and he held the wound, only for a breath. “Really,” he muttered.

“Do you like war?” He questioned. Whispers at the back of his mind were tempting him; a gun and blade could only get him so far. No- no. I can’t. Not now.

“Or is this your brand of patriotism?” He swapped to his buster and fired off a few shots of his own. Close combat wouldn’t come easy.

Rockman loathed and loved that stare. It was the Life Virus, it was hairs prickling on the back of your neck- it was intense. And in this case, it terrified him.
Covering, hiding, and Rockman wanted to as well. Zipped lips was the life he lead. He held strong, keeping his gaze with Blues for as long as Blues held it. He gulped. “But you never have done that before. Ever. The only change is- what happened to us.”
And nothing could deny the feelings. The animals, the feral blood thirst. He was afraid to admit the kind of thoughts that ran through his mind at the touch, the feeling of the…familiar dark aura. “I could feel it. Heart hurts like heck for how hard it was beating. That doesn’t just happen- not anymore.”

Blues practically lunged forward to hug Rock.

“I recognize you are correct. It seems that is the only answer. But… I do– or did, not want to admit it.” He held him tighter.

“I am sorry.”

He could feel all of Rockman’s fear and he felt even worse for misinterpreting Enzan’s standoffishness. Those green eyes burned under his lids, and he pressed into Rock’s shoulder.

“I– Do not understand everything but. I am sure the doctor will have answers.”

"It's okay. It's okay," Rockman reassured, hands faltering to try to find a spot to sit around Blues. Too tall, too gangly- yet perfect in every way.

In any case, he considered this more his own fault than Blues'. What if I draw it out in him? He willed himself to relax in Blues' arms. "Y-Yeah. Yeah, dad knows everything. He'll have something."

He knew his father didn't know everything. But it gave him hope, nonetheless. Gotta blow this over before I have to wake Netto up...

Blues’ eyes lingered on that cut, every movement of Rock’s fingers making his insides twist. Swinging
The mention of the output made him cover his eye with his hand, it made him want his helmet back on. Maybe it would regulate whatever was happening or at least hide it. Rock didn’t need to see some kind of weakness from h– that’s not fair, he was supposed to share with Rock, they would both benefit from–
“What.” He snapped to attention, locking eyes with his partner. “Impossible. The dark aura has been purged from our systems.” His expression and tone revealed nothing, but his eye revealed everything. [Fear] Where was his damn helmet… [Protect]
“My scanners haven’t detected anything amiss. I was just having a hard time decoding and cataloging my memory data.”

He hated the idea. Loathed it, in fact. Thoughts raced and overtook his system and screamed you’re never getting out if he closes you in you’re going to be stuck there for fifteen years and miss Netto growing up and-
“Of course.” Rockman finally responded, “But you have to call Netto ad seven am, seven thirty, and then eight and if he doesn’t answer and get out of bed by eight you have to call my mama, because then he won’t get up and he has school at eight-thirty. He needs to eat before he goes to school, and-”
Rockman took a breath, a very deep one, realizing the anxiety of the situation was causing him to talk extremely quickly. “And just make sure he actually gets out of bed, is all…”
He tried to hide the hint of sadness at the thought of missing a school day with Netto- especially his first one back- but failed at it. He bit his tongue. “And if I’m not out by lunch maybe give him another call, cause I’m sure he’s gonna be freaking out and stuff, and, just update him on whats going on- sorry to disrupt your business day, really I am but he hates to eat lunch without me, his appetite and all and- “
“Gah, I’m sorry. We’ll prolly be fine by lunch. No problem.” Despite letting Enzan close off the server, his fears were still with him. He was preparing for worst, even if he didn’t intend to. (He’d always felt like his existence here was so…fragile. Fleeting.)
He suddenly linked arms with Blues and sort of pulled him down, whispering at his hearing receptors: “There’s something wrong. Not just with you, but with me. We need to chat. You can let Enzan know later. Please, Blues. I don’t want to admit it in front of him, not yet, please.”

“…I’ll be up before seven. And I won’t keep you here if you are so worried.” Enzan said it flatly, unable to really engage in the speed of Rockman’s worries. “I’ll have you out of here by six. I’m not getting Netto up for school.” The idea was ridiculous.

Blues would never show it, but the coolness Enzan showed now made him squirm. If only one of them would just spit it all out instead of holding him in suspense as if he weren’t here!

He stood stoically as ever, his arms at his sides. Enzan excused himself, but he assumed his netop would not be going back to sleep. Most likely he would try to work. Blues’ fingers clenched. This was so much.

The physical contact was a bit of relief, but the whispers did nothing to explain. Why did he feel dangerous, like his data was still tearing itself apart? His chest was so heavy. Why couldn’t his memory data have just finished sorting itself as he slept? Enzan should have a program go through it manually–

His eyes met Rock’s. <Processing>

“You- what? Both of us?”

Rockman sort of locked and unlocked his jaw at the response. He felt embarrassed. He didn't like when Enzan sort of dismissed him like that, but- it was fine. Whatever. He wanted to pout (he was pretty sure Enzan couldn't move that fast, and besides, he knew the long field trip he was taking to Scilabs later would eat up his time anyway). He'd have to do something. He hoped Mama could handle getting Netto up in the morning.

"It's f-" He started to say, but Enzan was gone already. Even if he always did things like that, Rockman never got used to it. As soon as Enzan was gone though, Rockman sunk a little into Blues' side.

"I don't know what just happened." Rockman mumbled, "just that something did."

He rubbed his mouth again. He thumbed at the cut on his cheek, messing with it. "You got up, started swinging, and then you started mouthing words...I don't know what you were saying. I...started to freak out."

He sighed and rubbed his eyes, trying to piece things together. "I took you to the ground and you were still talking, and outputting weird stuff in your eye, and then I couldn't move and all I could think about was- " I don't want to say it's name-

"Nebula Grey. Like it was calling again. Calling you. I think- Think there's something wrong. Something still...in us."

Licking Wounds

Laika’s eyes narrowed, but not for long. He sat up in his chair, scooting to the edge so that his feet could plant themselves firmly on the ground. A battle stance, subtle given their location.
“So what if he is? I don’t see your operator around. Beating you with this basic program will be easy.”
Image
A sneer graced his lips. “Searchman won’t have to be punished thanks to this little discovery. Your gift will be the perfect evidence towards nullifying your victory against us, and disqualifying you and your brat of an operator from the tournament.”
The navi behind Rockman began battle operations, leaping back as Laika inserted a battle chip.
“So really, you’ve just made yourself the ultimate loser. Prepare for deletion!”

"Hah!" Rockman laughed. He laughed and it was bells and childish and outright insulting. "You're so sore. You must be fun at parties," He turned and a basic sword formed on his left. He twirled around to face this normal Navi. "You're only concerned about winning. Well, everyone's going to remember how bad we beat you!"

image

He hated the idea that Searchman was going to be punished and made a mental note to come to him later to chat. He prayed that it was just a jab, just some offhanded comment- it was very hard to let go. He had to keep this up now. No turning back. He tried to channel those anxious and somewhat irritated emotions into the fight. I can do it on my own. I can do it on my own.

"I don't care if you nullify any victories. The real win, " Step, slash!

"Is the fact we stole victory from you where it mattered."

Blues grew rightly agitated by the lack of answers. Was it really so horrible they had to speak like this?
Enzan frowned, but understood the worries. “Rock, will it be alright if I keep the server isolated? You don’t need to leave for anything do you? You’ll be able to call me and anyone in the building. I don’t want– well. I would just prefer it that way.”
Blues’ eyes widened further. Quarantined? Him?
He looked to Rock for answers, and hardly understood the look. He needed to know now. Enzan could hear, he knew everything Blues did anyways.

He hated the idea. Loathed it, in fact. Thoughts raced and overtook his system and screamed you’re never getting out if he closes you in you’re going to be stuck there for fifteen years and miss Netto growing up and-

Licking Wounds

Laika simply stared at the other’s words, taking in his varied motions and expressions with nothing more than a frown.  It was so annoying to see him have so much energy. Laika had never seen so much life come from a navi.
“…” his eyes quietly fell on the chip that popped out of the wall. After a pause Laika sat up and pulled it out. He could spot the differences immediately.
Image
“Surprisingly, you’re not wasting my time.” he answered. The chip was pocketed.
No sooner than Laika did so, another navi plugged in behind Rockman. They were normal, uncustomized. However, they were armed.

The varied emotions; the life present in Rockman previously vanished, in just that instant. His jaw locked, his chest raised with a held breath. Thu-thu-thump his heart beat, stuttering and quickening. Here it was. The point of no return.

Image

“No, I’m not.” He responded. He blinked twice, when Laika pocketed the chip. “And it looks like you’re not wasting mine.”

The normal navi’s presence behind him made Rockman’s skin prickle, invisible goosebumps raising on his arms. Netto was not present for this (it was quickly decided that he might, just might screw it up). Rockman was alone in this fight.

“Where’s Searchman?” He asked, then. “Still recovering from his beat-down?”
