When we started this adventure around three months ago (even though it feels like a year already!), we didn’t expect so many people to join us in the different fests and events we wanted to organize. And we certainly did not expect to reach one thousand followers on Tumblr this fast (or ever, to be completely honest!).

Because we want to thank you immensely for all your support, for following us, for participating in the events and, after all, helping keep this fandom very much alive, we’re happy to announce a giveaway to celebrate these 1k followers.

How to participate:

  • There will be ONE winner, and the prize will be a creative giveaway. The winner will give us a prompt, and our fanfic writers, artists, gif makers, etc, will work their magic and come up with creations of their own. It will likely be more than one thing: maybe a fic and an art, maybe a fic, art and gifset, or even more than a fic and more than one art…
  • Only reblogs count, not the likes. If you want to reblog as a signal boost but don’t want to participate, just say so in the tags and we won’t include you.
  • You have to be following us to participate!
  • We will notify the winner via private message, so make sure your inbox is open.
  • If the winner doesn’t contact us within two days, we will have to pull another winner.
  • The giveaway will end on September 5th 23:59 GMT (any reblogs after that time won’t count), and we will announce the winner as shortly as possible.
  • Any other questions, do tell us in our ask box or twitter.

Good luck!!

(A huge thank you to @sirenja-and-the-stag for the wonderful gif, as always)

What an amazing part of our fandom @hannibalcreative is ... so many artists, gif-makers, authors and other talented people working together to keep our beloved show alive. We are the envy of other fandoms, such is our fandom’s diversity and huge talent pool. Thank you to ALL you talented #Fannibals for making this THE fandom to be in. I feel blessed xx

The Hannibal Fandom and Internalized Misogyny

In the real world the cult like following of serial killers like Ted Bundy and Richard Ramirez by women is seen as sick and sad. We understand these women aren’t healthy. We as a society may be fascinated by these men and what they did (I know I am and am a true crime junkie) but we do not defend these men or blame the women who fall charm to them.

However if you jump over to a specific fandom of a fictional serial killer you will find just the opposite.  I’m talking about the Hannibal fandom in all forms (TV, Book/Movie).  I personally can’t speak for other fictional serial killer fandoms online so maybe somebody from the Dexter fandom would like to jump in the comments (I enjoyed what I’ve seen of the show but I heard everyone was pissed with the finale). Thomas Harris’ original novels are very feminist, there are actual academic articles on the feminist issues in the novels, “The Silence of the Lambs” as a film is still discussed as a feminist film in academic settings (my best friend actually had to watch in one of her gender studies graduate level classes a couple years ago).  And yet this discourse is almost gone from the fandom.

There are subsets of the fandom that will attack you for defending Clarice. They will accuse you of finding her a flawless character; accuse the narrator of forgiving her, of not punishing her trespasses; her trespasses of being one of the most human characters of literature? So she’s a bit of bitch?  So she knows she’s the smartest and prettiest girl in the room? So she judges other people and has an internal monologue about it? So she doesn’t own up to her own mistakes?  These things make her human and relatable and not worthy of the amount of patriarchy she puts up with.

These same people will call Hannibal Lecter a cinnamon roll, too pure for this world, too good. They will take the character who killed 9+ people, ate body parts, ruined people’s lives and manipulated people and defend him as a broken misunderstood man. They will woobify him.  Yes Clarice must pay for making a steroid joke to herself about Margot, but those 9 people Hannibal killed clearly deserved it they didn’t have friends and families who would think otherwise.

And then it clicked…

Very interesting reading and definitely food for thought - give it a look.

Bonsoir, Everybodyhatesjroth! Your besties, Fannibals, need your help. A certain fandom, which recently blamed you for cheating in a poll, made it their business to vote against the Hannibal fandom. They are in the delusion that Fannibals had won by cheating in the last poll we had against them. Now they are sabotaging our poll on RadioTimes 2016 Drama Championship. They have been very rude. We need to win this poll now more than ever. We would appreciate all the help we can get. Thank you!

HERE IS THE DL ON THIS ROUND OF THE RT POLL!

  • We are in the lead right now!! :)
  • We always manage the lead at this hour! :)
  • But lose it the next morning (US Time). :((((
  • This is the last day of the poll, but it ends 10 AM ET (7 AM PT) :(
  • SO - we have to work EXTRA HARD right now to push the lead, and come back again as soon as possible in the am. (We could also have a Fannibal voting sleepover for those night owls or on vacation! ;) )

Let’s show all these other fandoms what we’re made of!!!! AND GET MADS THAT TROPHY!

Lets get Daddy a shiny new trophy, guys!! #Hannibal #Fannibals

Would you happen to have any advice for new fic writers who feel discouraged by what seems to be the rather tight circle of 'elite' fandom writers who routinely promote each other's work? New works get produced all the time and yet it seems to be the same 6-10 names that get circulated and recirculated on tumblr. This is not intended to take anything away from those writers. It's simply a matter of how to break into the mix when the other voices are so loud and echoed by each other. Thank you

You bring up a good point, and I think it’s true of every writing circle that we form cliques. Every workshop I’ve been in, every class I’ve attended – hell, my graduate school program – were all pretty much people forming cliques. And yes, in each clique, some writers definitely got more notice. They were genuinely good at what they did, and had worked hard like everyone else; they just got more notice for whatever reasons. Sometimes it was luck, sometimes it was the fact they wrote something which just happened to be popular, sometimes their voice struck a chord, etc.

So the long and short of is: yes, there are “favorites” (always). And yes, writing (or fandom) circles form closed ecosystems, where we do present X writers over and over again.

As for advice. My only advice is to persist. The more you write, the more stuff you have circulating for people to notice. So write more, post more, keep working. Participate in fandom with things like #DrunkenKisses and #Don’tFuckMeUp. Keep talking to other people in fandom, talk to other writers, bounce ideas off each other, etc.

But persist. I’ve been in fandom 12 years. I spent a lot of those 12 years building an audience, so  it takes time. I am not saying it will take you 12 years, but I am saying: these things don’t happen overnight. Those X names circulating are people who often worked hard. They’ve earned it. And there are usually no shortcuts.

The other thing: never ever ever write for any kind of recognition. Writing for recognition is the wrong way to write. Write for yourself first – to please yourself, to satisfy yourself. Write what you want to read. Write what you want, regardless of what other people are doing. But never write because you think something might be popular or earn you recognition of some kind. It’s not to say it’s not nice to have an audience, but write for yourself first.

Avatar

We do encourage people to start writing, or keep writing! In fact, we’ve had many people telling us our fests and challenged encouraged them to write for the first time, and it was amazing!

We promote everyone’s works for our events, like the concluded #JustFuckMeUp and #DrunkenKissesChallenge or the upcoming #SpacedogsSummmer and #ItsStillBeautiful!

So please don’t hesitate to join and participate, we all want to support and inspire creativity.

It’s hard to find quality stuff sometimes, especially in a fandom as vibrant and thriving as the Hannibal fandom. We all only have so much time to devote to reading fic, and I think a lot of people prefer to go with what they know is a “safe” choice from an author they know they love than branching out.

But I will say, as far as fandom cliquishness goes, Hannibal is one of the least problematic I’ve ever stumbled upon. I started writing in August and I was almost immediately welcomed by other, established authors in the fandom, and I’ve seen several others become really popular in the, frankly brief, time since then. I think this fandom is less concerned with the name on a thing, and more with the quality of it. There are BNFs in some fandoms where I’m frankly scratching my head over how they got so popular. In this one, there are a LOT of talented folks.

Somehow I’ve found myself in that sphere, to a certain extent, and one way that works for getting your fic recognised?? TALK ABOUT IT. I’ve had several people PM me with links to their fic, asking me to read and, if I enjoyed it, reblog/rec. And every single time I’ve done it, because they’ve turned out to be quality fics. I will give anything sent to me a chance, at least.

Also, it helps to be realistic about your writing–get a beta or ask for some feedback (I ask for feedback from multiple sources on all of my fics before posting). The more you write, the better you get, and as mentioned, being involved in all these challenges is a great way to flex your creative muscles, maybe think outside the box, and get some notice.

You can sit there hoping to be noticed, and sometimes it happens. But in a fandom of this size, it really can’t hurt to promote, promote, promote!

I’ve got no idea how this stuff usually works, since this is the first fandom I’ve ever written for. But FWIW, to whatever degree I’ve had some vague level of fic writing success among Fannibals, I attribute it only like 25% to any actual merit of my nonsense writing, and mostly to having flung myself enthusiastically into the deep end of participatory fandom like an overeager puppy. I found some people posting stuff on Tumblr I really liked and started talking to them and some of them were kind enough to talk back, and I posted some comments on the fics of people whose writing I liked and some of them talked back. And, while that was not my original aim (I really just wanted to flail enthusiastically about my trash fire heart and other people’s amazing writing and headcanons and stuff), I think it may have also engendered some “hey, I talk to this person a bunch, maybe I’ll check out their fic too” stuff. I definitely do that myself - I can’t read every fic, so I am probably more likely to read fics of someone whose name I recognize from Tumblr interactions, all else being equal.

I suspect in the AU where I just posted quietly on AO3 and did not otherwise engage the fandom, no one noticed my fics at all.

All that aside, who thinks it might be fun to do a “rec some stuff from authors who you don’t usually rec” thing? Give some under appreciated fics some love? I think it might. If I find myself without a seatmate on my train tomorrow, so I can browse AO3 bookmarks merrily without offending anyone with all the murder and blood, I might could pull an underloved-gems fic rec post together.

There’s a load of good points in this post. I only started writing in January this year, and posting in March, and though I am far from being a Name in Hannigram fic I’ve been pretty pleased with the reception so far. And it is challenging keeping up with the sheer amount being produced in the fandom sometimes.

Talking to people is kind of why I’m here - already I’ve met some lovely people with who I share a similar pov and this has led to helping people out with beta stuff and more offers of beta and *collaborations* omg (!!!). And just sharing and enjoying each other’s stuff - that’s kind of the whole point of creative work, right?

@damnslippyplanet that’s an excellent idea btw, maybe it could be a fandom challenge? We’ve had so many events recently focused on producing stuff (you should see my drafts), as a counter there could be a week to read and rec something from an author you’ve never read/rec’d before? Or something?

I’ve been in fandoms where they definitely did a “New to Me” challenge, and invited fans to promote the works of writers/vidders/artists which didn’t get as much attention as some.

I agree that Hannibal fandom is the least cliqueish fandom I’ve been in. But we still present the same writers a lot. For good reason, as I noted. But anon is right – it’s good to point out new voices.

A ‘New to Me’ challenge is a great idea because it gets around the thorny problem of what ‘under-represented’ actually is. And including artists etc. too, yes! I might try this myself as an ongoing thing (though I don’t read anywhere near as much as I used to, I just find it impossible when I’m writing) but it might be worth tagging @hannibalcreative in this in case this of interest? I know they have their own schedule of events planned. Unless anyone else wants to of course…

We love hearing people’s suggestions about new challenges or fests (we even encourage you guys to do it in our FAQ). We also love, as we say above, encouraging people to create, new and less known authors included!

This is a great idea and we’d love to hear more about it if you guys have any ideas as to how we could help and proceed.

An event would be cool, but that’s a one shot.  We could then keep it going as a tag.  But that seems disorganized, and isolating in a sense.  It would mean we’re all just doing our own thing individually.

@jadegreenworks and I were just discussing maybe a ‘day of the week’ type thing.  Like say, Fic Drop Friday. (Oh god, someone who’s better at naming things, please chime in.)

That way we’d all be participating, regularly, on the same day.  If once a week is too often, it could be like the first Friday of every month or something?

Of course we’d have to set some sort of parameters.  Like what qualifies as an under viewed fic, or artwork, or author / artist?  A fic / art post under x notes?  A fic or artwork on AO3 under x hits?  From an author / artist under x hits?  (Otherwise we could just get a new fanwork from someone more established.)

Okay, I honestly just grabbed a lot of people from the notes for this post.  Anyone can message me directly at any time if you have ideas.  Especially if they are better than mine. ;)

@hannibalcreative if you guys could signal boost? *bats eyes*

I’m down!

Your wish is our command ;D Signal boosting like woah because this is a wonderful idea!

Conclusion

Let me start off by thanking everybody (again) who contributed. This has been a breeze and I learned quite a lot of things as well :) and had contact with so many beautiful people.

IMHO: This is a blessed fandom.

Not only do most of it take that little motto “Eat the rude” to their hearts, but it is incredibly creative, devoted, just a little bit on the crazy side, open-minded and funny. A rather seductive combination as I myself have found out…. :)

And of course - not last or least - it is utterly blessed to have cast, creators and crew supporting it and wanting to come back for more.

I think that this - the birthday video others made, the rewatches, the various tags, and all the art, the stories and the special events that are being organized, and yes, this ad - is the glue that keeps this fandom from disbanding. It’s been a year, and it will be a year still. We’re still here and I believe that if we keep on like this, it’ll happen. We have to keep pushing. To quote a long time favorite film of mine, “Not so long. Just once around the sun.”. We believe in you, Bryan and Martha :)

I will post here some of the feedback we got for the ad - the feedback I have gotten on various accounts, and that others have gotten on theirs. It’s not just feedback from official channels, but also from other Fannibals, because I think some of it is very important. And yes, I have been getting harsh criticism also - though in a tone of voice that’s very much “trolling” level and therefore I will ignore here. I’ve said it before, I take it as a badge of honor :) [I did not delete it, its in the comments here and on the campaign].

Now, first things first. Senpai(s) noticed us, which (admittedly) was part of the goal, because we want them to see this!! (Of course^^)

We got likes and RTs by Martha DeLaurentiis, Janice Poon, Scott Thompson, Helen Shang, Loretta Ramos, Kacey Rohl, Steve Lightfoot, Lara Jean Chorostecki and Brooke Palmer. And sooo many Fannibals, it’s amazing. I still get the notifs. Love you all.

There were quite a few Fannibals that were very happy that we wrote “around the world”. Guess what - I am also from around the world, and I know EXACTLY how you feel…. Season 3 officially aired here just now. It’s beyond ridiculous. The rating system that (officially) felled Hannibal has to go. We’re worldwide. Thank god the streaming vendors are interested (if that rights management is ever solved) - and yes, I have gotten that as feedback from various sources.

What astounded me, is the praise this fandom got from other (what I would perceive) Fandoms/parts of the internet.

RT: “Fannibals have their shit together… #EmmyForHannibal”

These were some of the comments on the GoFundMe and Tumblr:

“In honor of Bryan, Mads, Hugh, Gillian, Laurence, Caroline, Lara Jean, and all other cast and crew. Thanks for a wonderful show and looking for season 4.”

and

“Hannibal has never received an Emmy and it’s high time those who vote give the show it’s due.”

and

“#EmmyForHannibal #SaveHannibal Hannibal deserve to win the award and This great show should be save and keep going season 4! There are not only United state audience to watch this show, I hope they can understand if any company save this show, you will win the audience from around the world.”

The latter is another example for the reach of this show. If you’ve ever seen the korean TV spots (for example) you don’t doubt for a second it may have cult status everywhere… (go on, google it :))

Conclusion to the conclusion:

Will this serve as a means to get Hannibal an Emmy? *shrugs* Who knows. The Voting is not as simple a process, yes (as criticised), but there is a reason why all the others put their ads in the LA Times now as well.

But even if it doesn’t, I personally think that it was very well worth the money. Because there’s something physical out there, that was delivered to a lot of people that shows that WE’RE still out here and WE’RE still fighting for this show.

And maybe that’s even more important.

There is no better ship.

Why when someone hates Hannibloom or Hannidelia everyone is like “oh, it’s ok to dislike a pairing, it’s just having personal tastes” (and it’s true, well, it’s totally ok to dislike a thing!) and when someone says “I hate may slightly dislike Hannigram“ usually an army of people laughs at this poor person and this person usually receive also hate and unfollowing and angry comments.

I speak as person who likes Hannibloom AND Hannigram (and Willana and a lot of other ships, because I like almost every Hannibal character) and see how differently these pairings are treated by the majority of Fandom. Like, if Alana does one little mistake, everyone judges her, but if Hannibal ruin everyone’s life, disfigure Will and try to kill him “is love”. No. No. Yes, but no.

Respect other pairings, always. There’s no need for hate.

I know reasonable Hannigram shippers will agree.

JOIN US IN #SpacedogsSummer!!

WHAT IS IT: #SpacedogsSummer is an event that we are organizing to celebrate the love for this pairing.

THE PAIRING: In case someone doesn’t know exactly what Spacedogs is, it’s the pairing between Hugh Dancy’s character Adam, from the movie Adam (2009), and Mads Mikkelsen’s character Nigel, from the movie The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (2013). The name comes from the union of Adam’s love for space, and Nigel’s shirt with Wiener dogs (here you have the ‘how it originated’ story).

WHEN: On July 3rd-10th.

WHAT CAN YOU DO: write a fanfic, draw a fanart, create a gifset, make a fanvid… Pretty much anything you want, as long as it has something to do with Spacedogs. Other pairings can be included too, but Spacedogs must be present in any way.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: It’s as simple as this: write/draw/create something for the fest, publish it on Tumblr, Twitter, AO3 or whenever you want, and TAG IT with #SpacedogsSummer (please be consistent with this tag, DO NOT tag it “SpacedogsSummerFest”, “SpacedogSummer” or any other variation, since it will make it difficult for us to track every posts).

IF you are publishing in a site where we can’t look at the tags, please let us know via twitter or Tumblr and we will reblog and retweet. And if during the fest week you can’t find your post reblogged in our community after 1 or 2 days, please do tell us, since tumblr tags sometimes don’t work properly.

We’ve set up a collection on AO3 where you can add your works for the fest, HERE (But please don’t post until the official dates!).

We will promote the works in our Tumblr and Twitter as well, as long as you use the proper tags or let us know :)

Happy #SpacedogsSummer!!!!

“I felt a sense of co-ownership with Mads and Hugh, because so much of this show and my favorite moments of crafting this show were working in conjunction with two brilliant actors who were as invested in the storytelling as I was. And, as creative as I was. So much of what we give these actors is riddles and poetry. For them to navigate that, and find something genuinely emotional and authentic, is a testament to their skills and their craft.”
