one of the important cornerstones of fandom is understanding that your headcanon is not everyone else's headcanon, and i'm not sure when people stopped understanding this

Headcanon: Something you think is canon without it explicitly being canon. No one else needs to buy into it, you can even contradict yourself with other headcanons!

Fanon (Headcanon subset): Something a lot of people in the fandom have collectively agreed is canon without it explicitly being canon. No one needs to buy into it, you can even contradict yourself with other headcanons or fanons!

Canon: Canon. No one needs to buy into it (or at least every aspect). The writers did their thing, and now it belongs to fans to expand on or change in ways that feel comfortable.

Notice how in all of these, no one needs to buy into it. Even stuff that's canon, there are plenty of things where artists of any medium will say "no, that's actually fucked up of canon and I'm not gonna buy into it" and that's fine!

We're all just playing with dolls; no one needs to get hurt playing pretend.

those posts criticizing common writing patterns in fanfiction are so fucking harmful and they ruined me

so like yknow what??? People tell you to avoid “smirk” and “chuckle” as descriptors because no one does those things (???) but then when I need to use those words I have a ten minute crisis about how I’m a shitty writer. So heres my unwarranted writing advice: If you want your characters to smirk and chuckle fucking let them and don’t let anyone tell you that no one smirks or chuckles because I do both on a daily basis whenever I tell a shitty pun, bye

Lemme get this straight: you write shit in your spare time, for free, as an unpaid amateur and people are complaining about common phrases? They should be grateful that they are getting more of the character they love for free, and stop bitching because it’s not Oscar Wilde. Use your common phrases, bb. Fuck anyone who has the fucking AUDACITY to complain. No one asked you, you absolute turnip. These are not professionals. Quit complaining about what you aren’t paying for.

Love the idea of a story about a complex issue that's told from the perspective of something that cannot comprehend or care about the issue. The way the story would be sliced up and moments that a human would consider pointless would be focused on because the pigeon happened to be there would be hype as fuck
