the shooting in Atlanta of 8 massage parlour workers by a white man was a white supremacist hate crime and the latest in a series of attacks on Asians in the US. however, it’s also extremely important to note that the group he targeted are a community that is already more vulnerable to state violence than many, in form of police raids, deportations, and systematised stigmatisation. this is an industry that’s often conflated with and overlapping with sex work, and the industry has faced decades of criminalisation and dehumanisation, with a long history of being targeted by cops and systemic injustice along with racialised misogyny and fetishisation. they are also often excluded from conversations about the latest rise of anti-asian racism in the US, since many do not fulfill the “american” part of asian-american.

This is a really big reason I don’t drive and I hate that in so many areas in the US your freedom to move around ESPECIALLY as a young person. Is dependent on your ability to drive or the investment your local area decides to put in public transportation.

The US is doing especially bad (although several European countries actually have higher death rates per capital) but frankly the entire West has done a pretty poor job (bar Australia and New Zealand as pretty much the sole exceptions).

While Europe deals with a second wave and the US never left the first one, the pandemic is basically non-existent in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, New Zealand, Australia, and even the country where it began. Western democracies have done a piss-poor job at addressing the pandemic and I think this is something that needs to be seriously looked at.

A lot of things have contributed, blind adherence to neoliberal capitalism, a greater focus on individual rights over the community, lack of political will to invest in truly effective contact tracing and take drastic measures, not taking it seriously until it was too late, but far more people should be furious that their governments did not do better. Multiple Asian countries have proven it’s possible and that it didn’t need to be this way and I think people should be angry about that.

sometimes i think about gay people who lived centuries ago who thought they were all alone who imagined a world where they could live openly as themselves who met in secret spoke in code defied everything and everyone just to exist and i’m like..i gotta sit down. whew i gotta sit down
