Having a sibling who's 10-11 years older than me makes me think about and appreciate Arthur and John's dynamic so much.

As much as John likely poked and prodded and gave Arthur grief as a mangy kid, I firmly maintain that he thought Arthur was the COOLEST dude ever. Idolized the fuck out of him. Thought he always had his shit together. Wanted to be him so bad. It was not primarily Dutch, but instead Arthur that he looked up to.

My sister tells me that as a significantly older sibling, you'll always perceive your younger sibling as that wee little baby new to the world, even as you age. I definitely see that in Arthur.

He gives John SO much shit to the point that everyone in camp points it out, jokes about it. Arthur will always see John as this scrappy little kid that he needs to keep in line, lest he do something stupid or dangerous. I can see Arthur adopting a parentified sibling role when John first came along, being that Dutch and Hosea were older and acted as parental units.

Arthur feels a sort of responsibility over him that John begins to resent as he enters adulthood, trying to prove himself and become his own person. John worries that he will never amount to Arthur, and perhaps self-sabotages to confirm that belief. Arthur worries that John will never learn from his own mistakes. He only sees that defiant and slipshod little kid, so eager to prove himself to the gang. And every mistake John makes only confirms this fear of Arthur's.

I don't have conclusive thoughts about this part, but I do think about whether Arthur had any sort of conflicted feelings about young John entering the gang in his earlier years. I don't think he dove too deeply into it; after all, Dutch and Hosea did save both of them from a lonely and empty life, regardless of how it turned out. But, I think as Hosea and his better judgement were no longer, and as Dutch became increasingly unstable towards the end, these memories and thoughts unlocked and flooded back for Arthur.

He was running out of time on this earth, and he wanted to guide his baby brother to safety - provide him with stern wisdom one last goddamn time, hoping and praying that he would actually take it for once.

But John finally did, even if just for a short while.

also. arthur morgan is dog coded because he has known love and has known this love to spread it and to save and to be loyal and helpful and that is what eventually kills him. being a good man. being a good dog. self-sacrificial and guilty because he's bitten and he needs to make up for the blood spilled. his place is to fight against his nature. to be gentler. to learn how to use his teeth a different way than what was destined of him.

john marston is wolfdog coded. a dog in everything but mind. he is not loyal. he is skittish and he runs from authority. he knows to bite the hand that feeds when it deserves it. but he wants to love. he wants to sit by the fireplace and have fingers running through his fur. but he is half wild and half teeth. as is his nature. and he runs. but he comes back. he always comes back. a wolfdog is all teeth and vigor. but he can be soft too. but nature is nature. and he knows how to bite best.

dutch van der linde is a wolf. he cannot fight his nature. and though a part of him longs for it. knows it. what that love might feel like. the contentment. he cannot fight nature. he is all teeth. a product of nature and geared for it. snapping at everything and everyone. a wolf will tear off its leg in a trap if pressed. a wolf knows it cannot love the same way a dog might. it is too rough for that. too violent. cannot and will not be caged. the hand is soft but the hand is foreign and unknown. cannot be trusted. a wild animal will not fight it's nature. it can be taken out of the wild. but the wild cannot be taken out of it.

I don't understand why people call John Marston stupid. He isn't dumb, he's barely functioning day to day and it's not HIS fault that whacky shit keeps happening to him. How would YOU react if your family turned into zombies after just going through like a billion Herculean trials to get them back???? That man is so checked out from reality that shit happens and he has no choice but to go "ok" and move on from that. John Marston has a customer service worker's ability to simply dissociate and complete tasks on auto pilot. He's not Arthur "helpful and kind" Morgan. He's a bitter fuck who does not give two shits about anyone he wants to get his beloved wife back so she can peg him and he wants to get his bitch ass emo son back so they can communicate poorly and take turns doing stupid nonsensical shit to give Abigail more stress in her life. He's just a Guy okay and I love him he's The Dad of All Time and I think he makes stupid fucking decisions but so do I and that's okay he's doing his best.

little jack is so funny for looking so much like arthur. obviously he grows up to look a lot more like john and his parentage is not really in question, but as a kid? fucking classic. pop out of an honest woman during a time of extreme familial strife looking like the spitting image of your pisshead father's nonbio brother? no genetic reason. just to shake the commune up, yknow? chaos maneuver. king shit. unbelievable

I suddenly wanted to draw little Arthur and company 🤕

I think after his father’s death, he wandered alone for some time, left to his own devices… and starved for a long time Hosea and Dutch picked him up like a wounded puppy

I have a short idea that during all the time Arthur had 3 horses (the third is the one that appears in the game) and I have headcanons about each one…

Arthur's first horse:

American paint horse TENNESSEE she is an old lady (she is about ~18 years old, I think) and Arthur stole her from some shepherd during a robbery.

● Tennessee is very mischievous and stubborn, she loves to bite people.. ● Apart from Arthur, she doesn’t really let anyone get close to her, with rare exceptions (if she’s been coaxed with sugar) ● Thanks to Nessie, John now has a fashionable hairstyle (//you wondered who cut him off so beautifully😂😂..) ● On principle, she refuses to carry tied up bandits whom Arthur finds through advertisements with a reward. So he has to drag them on another horse… ● Eventually retired as an extra horse for the gang

NOTHING makes me sad faster than thinking about arthur and john and what the months, years following arthur’s death up until the epilogue were like for him. when did he stop talking about arthur? bc he says to jack he doesn’t talk abt him much. did he have moments where he forgot for a second that arthur was gone and wanted to excitedly tell him something or ask for his advice? what was grieving like for him or did he even do it properly at all and instead bottled up his emotions? did he ever have a moment a short while after arthur died where he forgot arthur was dead and thought about giving him his hat back for half a second bc it was so special to him? did he feel all wrong wearing it at the start bc it was arthur’s and that’s how it would’ve stayed if right was right? how long did it take him to read arthur’s journal? did he space it out so when he really needed it he had more of arthur’s thoughts or did he do it all in one night? does he ever reread the journal? just… what was it like for him to lose his brother

Chores 1

The first couple months were difficult to adjust for John. All he wanted to do was be a bandit and go out shooting with the gang. Like all gang members, they had to pay their dues by doing the chores around camp. He finds Arthur's cattleman revolver and takes it out for a spin. And guess who catches him.

Sometimes I think about how John felt when he turned thirty-seven and became older than Arthur. Did he think about it, or did he not think about it at all? Just woke up one day and suddenly realized he was older than his older brother. Was there some kind of dissonance in his mind? Or did he not allow himself to think about it because just the mere thought of outliving Arthur would send his brain into a spiral, revealing all those ugly wounds?

Maybe he woke up and thought, "How ridiculous," because even in the worst scenarios, he couldn't imagine that a strong man like Arthur would die without seeing what John had accomplished.

But life is what it is, he thought.

He's thirty-seven, he's gotten older, but no matter how old he gets, the image of Arthur in his head will always be older. Because that's how he remembers him.

Just his big brother, the voice of reason that even in his final moments was able to guide him on the right path.

thinking about how heartbreaking it must be for john to learn that his older brother lived a whole life without him, that no one in the gang knew about. that he was gentler, more open, curious and good, that there are strangers in the world who know a completely different arthur than the one that john knew, and that arthur kept that kinder part of him close to his chest, only revealing it to strangers. that there are strangers in the world who arthur helped, and saved, even when he was a dying man, and john would never know them.

i mean, god, imagine finding out someone that you grew up with, that has been there for almost your entire life, and that they kept so much from you, and you only learn of that side of them when they are dead, and that you can never ask them questions, or ask them what they meant, or ask them about other experiences that may not have been meaningful to him, but meant the world to these strangers, that a man rode in and offered them a ride and good advice, and that arthur just... didn't think anything of it, not enough to note it in his journal.

john never getting to ask arthur about other experiences, what he's seen, what he would like to forget, the moments that are a little too embarrassing to note down, but you would absolutely love to hear as his shithead little brother, asking him how he felt about these experiences.

john never getting to meet the man that arthur kept so hidden to his chest and only learning about it after he died is just.. so tragic.
