in a country entirely unfamiliar, jinwook still finds the ocean calling to him. when they arrive at the beach location for the music video, he’s enamored by the fresh feel of it. monitoring the shots, it looks magical on camera too. the scenes are short, though, and leave him wanting for more. two days later, his tourist activity of choice brings them, unsurprisingly, to santa monica. hyun is the one who jinwook ends up dragging along, but they’ve always made a good pair like this: hyun nudging jinwook out of his comfort zone, and the two of them indulging whatever whims come to mind.

with comeback preparations in full-swing, woohyun finds less and less time for the approaching birthdays of his members. there’s two this month– jinwook early and seungcheol a couple days after his. a lot of his gifts come with weeks and days of thought, gift hunting a head of time so he’s not overwhelmed with promotions or preparation. jinwook’s is more on impulse, with the want of being able to give him something before they head into the harsher time of preparation.
it’s a cute animal crossing plush keychain – celeste, he had chosen happily, remiscent of his and jinwook’s conversation about the cute character. bought for jinwook in mind after a couple hours of searching late into the night (a decision he doesn’t regret at all, even if he drags his feet through training the next morning). when it arrives, woohyun’s quick to wrap it in a cute gift box, attached with a brief note to jinwook.
he sets it on jinwook’s bed, right in the middle where he can’t miss it.

the day feels full of surprises, and when jinwook finally arrives back home, he discovers yet another: a small gift box on his bed, one last gift. he reads the note first, smiling immediately at the greeting. time flies, indeed. it’s been almost three years since they’d met when woohyun came over to sphere, and now jinwook can’t imagine a group without him. when he lifts the pretty lid of the box, his grin widens. let’s wish on it!, said the note. jinwook laughs to himself as he picks up the keychain, the plush soft under his fingertips. she’s perfect — representative of the stars, protecting their wishes, always looking up. it’s only too bad that jinwook didn’t get the chance to tell fans about the gift in his birthday stream.
that doesn’t mean jinwook can’t show it off, though. he clips it to the hook of his small carry-on travel bag, a cheery splash of color that will definitely show in the airport photos for their upcoming trip to la. he opens instagram and swipes to the camera, framing the keychain in animated hearts, with the note and box visible behind it. jinwook adds small text to the photo: ‘cute star girl from cute hyung 🥺’, and a tag for @convex_royal before posting it to his story. then he runs out of the room, eager to track woohyun down and hug him in person.

rkashe | when she’s with jinwook, she can almost forget that she left sphere. almost. of course, it’s different now. when she was still a sphere trainee, they saw each other more often, even with jinwook as an idol– more opportunity to show each other songs and offer each other input. there isn’t that anymore, despite keeping in touch and low quality audio snippets sent through messages. she made a joke once about him hiding demos in seocho for her to pick up and listen to, but jinwook assumed they would get in trouble, and jinwook has never seemed like much of a rulebreaker.
now, they actually have time together to really work on a song. she’ll use this as an opportunity to twist his arm and force him into more days like this, when they both have free time. july is a busy month, full of comeback prep right off the back of up & down’s success, and she almost wants to tell jinwook about it in her excitement. she’s pretty sure she’s not supposed to, but she also wasn’t supposed to tell him she was joining luxe, and she didn’t listen to that.
“always here for the unconventional,” she agrees with a nod, happy to help bring jinwook out of his comfort zone if that’s what he needs. she raises an eyebrow though. “solo? nice. that’s exciting!”
“you’re being stupid,” she says soon after, before jinwook even finishes his thought. it’s with a smile though, half a joke, though she also guesses he’s worrying about nothing. she withholds further judgment though, remarkably, actually listening to his concerns, and decides to wait to validate or dismiss his concerns until after she listens to the demo. she does, focused on all of the sounds and the lyrics. it isn’t really her style, but jinwook’s never really has been, but she admires that about him. she still appreciates his talent and the heart he puts into everything he makes.
after it finishes, she turns to him. “this sounds similar to some of your other stuff,” she begins, and luna isn’t the type to mince words. “that’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. you have a really distinct style and it’s recognizable. it suits convex well. but if you want to do something different, i’ll force you to,” and she grins.
he can’t say he didn’t ask for it. jinwook doesn’t take offense, his initial disappointment soothed over by luna’s full explanation. “yeah,” he says, “i figured as much.”
it’s more than just the sound, but jinwook doesn’t think she would appreciate a conversation about simple’s mildly depressing lyrical content; how he’d written it before debut but two years later, it scares him how little his feelings have changed, and somehow re-recording it feels like saying he’s still ungrateful for the opportunities he’s been given. something rubs him the wrong way, even if it hits the right emotional beats. not to mention the song’s transparency, doubts laid bare for any fan to understand and nothing couched in pretty imagery like pinwheel’s.
jinwook takes his phone back and switches to his notes app instead of getting into it. it’s nothing he hasn’t fought himself over all month. in the end, it’s true that he’s just being stupid. “i’m doing different,” he replies, deflating a little. “i’ve been taking workshops again to shake it up, since this comeback is so... chainsmokers?” he waves a hand. “the title song, anyway. so i tried to push in that direction, but none of it was good enough, i guess.” he blinks into a small smile. “well, not good enough yet!”
that, or it’s too late and he’s already being considered through that narrow lens he’s nervous about. it occurs to jinwook, finally, that he’s sharing an awful lot about a comeback that won’t even be announced for another month. as he leans over to plug in his portable hard drive, he ponders on whether he should clarify it. better safe than sorry. he exhales dramatically. “with all of that being said~ confidentially, of course,” he singsongs, small smile sliding into a grin, “i have some stuff you might like better.”
he starts opening files, playing snippets to see if any pique her interest. it’s only a minute before one catches his own. “oh yeah,” he says, “this one’s like... a double pre-chorus, maybe.” the track is untitled (0:29 – 1:23), with basic synths and drum beats filled in behind the spoken hook. jinwook lets it play as he scrolls through his notes for any more lyrics to fill in the gaps. “i’m thinking about a first-verse rap for it.”

it’s a cute set, albeit typical for this kind of broadcast. the staff have provided jinwook with a fixed camera framing his mini birthday table, complete with multicolored balloons decorating the back wall. there’s a small tablet to monitor the stream and comment feed, which jinwook fiddles with as he waits. in retrospect, he thinks it would’ve been nicer to hold a more casual conversation with fans for his first solo live, but that might just be the nerves talking.

200719 | when he’d asked luna to coordinate some studio time in seocho together, jinwook knew it might be a long session. he comes prepared after schedules, freshly showered, with a giant insulated tumbler of iced tea. “i thought it would be more fun to write together,” he’s saying a few minutes into the evening, sipping from a straw, “since i want to mess around with some ideas that are less...” he gestures vaguely. “typical? i know i haven’t gotten to write a lot for convex yet, but they’re giving me a solo on the comeback album. one of my songs, but it feels sort of...”
“well, i don’t know.” jinwook pauses and sets down his drink. on second thought, he gives it a long push away from the expensive desktop monitors. “wait, can you tell me if i’m being stupid or not?” an easy set-up for most of his conversations with luna. this is something he hasn’t been able to broach with any of his members, though, despite their overwhelming support of his work, and jinwook has been overthinking it all month to the point that he really does need to be told straightforwardly. although once he’s asked, he doesn’t even know where to start. “i don’t want to seem ungrateful,” is his main concern. “i know it’s a big deal, with so many members, and i’m still happy with the song, i think it works as a solo, it’s just...”
this isn’t his most eloquent moment. “between this and pinwheel and campfire,” he says finally, “i don’t want to start putting myself in a box, you know?” it’s almost an unusual sentiment to express, from someone who has tried so hard, since the beginning, to hone his emotive strengths as a vocalist. now that it’s said out loud, he wonders if it sounds hypocritical. jinwook taps to wake his phone on the table and sighs. “sorry, you can at least listen to it first.” in his music files, the bare-bones simple demo is pinned to the top for easy access. he opens the player and pushes his phone over to luna. “this one is like two years old,” he clarifies, “but the structure hasn’t changed much.”

rkxroyal | his eyes are moving between the sky on the screen and a bug floating across in game– debating on taking his eyes off the sky in order to catch the pretty thing. he looks up at the sound of movement, blinking before he smiles at jinwook’s form. “hey,” he says in response, beaming before redirecting his attention back to the game. he’s quick to run to the airport to make sure his island’s open, before shifting to get more comfortable.
“celeste is so pretty,” he mumbles, pouting as he fiddles with the joystick. “i wish you could have her move on your island. can you? you can’t right? ah, so sad…” he trails off in a mumble that’s very near to a whine, pouty as he watches the arrival screen pop up. he sets the console gently on his lap, stretching his arms up, careful not to bump jinwook. retracting his hands back to the console, he watches the loading screen quietly, brows furrowing in thought. “oh! i have uh…a closet. or a wardrobe– it was a zodiac one i think.” he’ll have to check his diys to be sure, but he’s pretty sure that’s one of the ones he has. “tonight she gave me the…starry wall? so if you want, i can make you one of those.” he twists his head a bit to smile, even if it’s a bit awkward of a position. “anything for jinwook and our consta~~”
“maybe there are other owls to invite?” he muses, then sighs. “ah, but what’s the point if it’s not celeste...” jinwook would spare a moment to consider the social acceptance of developing a crush on an animal crossing villager, but it’s too late at night for hard thinking and really, could anyone disagree? his pout is audible, and he can picture woohyun’s matching expression without even being able to see his face from this angle. it makes him giggle as he finally steps out of the airport. he greets woohyun’s character with the joy emote, disoriented for a moment when he hears the sound effect echoed at a slight delay from the other console.
“lead the way~” he sing-songs. watching his character run around with friends in-game is always enjoyable, and jinwook’s pout easily slides away. “starry wall sounds nice,” he adds, trying to imagine what it might look like. well, jinwook doesn’t exactly have much at all in his house yet, so anything sounds nice. “i have a couple of the, um.... star materials for it, so i can trade you!” when woohyun twists to look at him, jinwook is waiting with a cheesy grin. “our hyung always takes care of us so well~ no wonder everyone always— oh!” the soft chime of a shooting star echoes between their switches, a valuable distraction. jinwook quickly shifts his camera up to catch one, then frowns when his character just swings his net instead. he’d forgotten to put away the tool. “ah, i missed it...”

jinwook stands in front of his bed for a long minute when he finds the gift, just rereading the note and feeling the quality of the notebook between his fingertips. it’s pretty and useful, but jinwook would be touched by the effort regardless. he hadn’t expected anything at all, and especially not from a newer member, when he’s still been feeling raw about the lineup change. only the sound of the dorm’s front door startles him out of his thoughts — someone on their way out — so jinwook quickly crumples the wrapping paper and rushes to catch up.
when he tracks his roommate down in the sphere dining room, it’s with a surprise hug from behind. “lee jaehyunnie,” he says as he leans down and wraps his arms (gently) around jaehyun’s neck, “you only left a note?!! are you trying to tell me i sleep in too late?” with a laugh, jinwook releases his hold and slides into the next seat. “thank you. seriously.” he smacks the notebook into his palm for emphasis, and the weight of it is satisfying. his smile is fond. “i’m excited to try it out today.”
