Ajuna never knew his mother. In fact, all he knew about his family was his grandmother who apparently didn’t want to give him up but had to for unknown reasons. (The nursemaids assumed it was money-related.)
Truth be told, Ajuna never really wanted to be adopted. Having parents seems like a very unusual concept to him and, if truth be told, he doesn’t really want parents. He knows Ekko’s relationship with his parents but finds it no different from the relationship Ajuna has with the nursemaids, but he feels that hiding things and obeying rules isn’t really his thing, and if the nursemaids are this strict with him when there are tens of other children to look after, he couldn’t imagine parents with just one child and what their rules might be like.
Looking at Ekko, Ajuna feels having parents would make his life no different, for they’d also probably work in the Factorywood and he would still be running about the streets, stealing and getting shot. Though it was entirely possible he would’ve just grown up with his grandmother instead, which he also felt might’ve just had the same results, ultimately.
For this, Ajuna often tries his best to not get adopted. Every once in a while, there are a few people who come from other places to adopt a child, but Ajuna makes certain he’s never even a consideration for he desires to stay in Zaun and with Ekko and the Lost Children.
On Mother’s Day, Ajuna often gives gifts to the nursemaids or, on some occasions, Inna, Ekko’s mother. Just because he can.
