Jack’s family always comes first- no matter what. Even if she is falling apart, her family- the newsies- always comes first. She will put everything she feels aside until she is certain that they are safe and okay, and then she’ll deal with herself on her own. She doesn’t like her family seeing her hurting. A split lip or black eye, she laughs off and assures everyone she’s fine. Nightmares, she doesn’t tell a soul about, because she’s supposed to be the leader, supposed to be strong.
”We fight for ourselves now.”
“That we do, Crutch.” She pulled the other newsie into a tight hug. The strike’d been over for only a few hours- they won, she still didn’t believe they won- and Crutchie out of the Refuge for even less than that. “We sure did show Pultizer, didn’t we?”

“Take my hand,” Jack said, reaching toward the other and taking her hand- she didn’t wait for an answer. “I’ve got you, and I ain’t gonna let go, alright?”

“I’m not gonna leave you Crutchie,” Jack said, going to sit next to the other newsie, even though she’d meant to leave minutes ago. “I’ve just got to go downstairs, check on the boys. I’ll be right back, I promise.”

The lodging house was closer than home, so Katherine stumbled her way there. And there she’d have a whole army of folks who could keep her safe.
But how could she ask them to protect her after what just happened?
She pushed through the door, dazed. “Jack?”
“That all they do? Take your money?” Her brow furrowed with worry as she took in the sight of her lover. To herself, Jack swore she would find out who’d hurt her love, and make sure they got the soaking they deserved.
Katherine shrugged, then winced as pain shot through her shoulder. “Roughed me up a little. I”m fine, though.”
She threw her arms around Jack and leaned on her. “I’m just tired. Can I stay here for a bit?”
.Jack accepted Katherine into her embrace, not bothering to question her love further. “Of course,” she said. “You can spend the night if you want.”

“Ace?” She called back, shooing the remaining newsies towards Race before hurrying to greet her sweetheart. “Ace, something the matter?”
Yeah,” she said listlessly. “I just got mugged.”
She walked toward Jack, dazed and aching for relief. “Maybe it was a mugging. they took my money. But then it seemed so personal, too.”
